The Hollow King

Chapter 36 · 4,518 words

The rift did not lead to the surface. It opened directly into the Cradle of Shadows, the absolute nadir of the Great Abyss.

As Kai stepped through the void, the atmospheric pressure was intense enough to crush a standard-issue tank into a cube of scrap. The air was thick with crystallized mana, swirling in violet vortices that felt like needles against his skin. This was the graveyard of empires, the place where the world’s tectonic plates ground against the raw, pulsing core of the planet.

And it was no longer empty.

Before him stood the source of the vibration. It was a Hollow King—an ancient, long-forgotten manifestation of the Rift’s own defensive instinct. It stood fifty feet tall, a skeletal titan draped in armor made of fused obsidian and solidified regret. It held a blade of pure, compressed gravity that warped the space around it, creating a shimmering distortion that threatened to unravel anything it touched.

The Vanguard’s seismic charges had cracked its tomb. Now, it was looking for a target for its eternal, aimless rage.

[System Notice]

Warning: Host encountered 'Hollow King' (Ancient Grade).

Difficulty: Extreme.

Status: The Hollow King is actively absorbing the seismic energy from the collapsing surface.

The King’s head swiveled, its hollow eye sockets erupting with a cold, pale light. It didn't roar. It simply raised its blade and brought it down.

The strike was deceptively fast. Kai didn't try to block it; he simply ceased to be where he was. He blinked ten meters to the left, his feet landing on a floating shard of rock. The space where he had been standing imploded, the floor of the cavern dissolving into a pit of nothingness.

"You're not a monster," Kai murmured, watching the King prepare a second strike. "You're a glitch. A leftover piece of a system that forgot to delete you."

Kai’s Sovereign’s Domain surged, expanding until it pushed against the King’s own aura. The two fields collided, creating a shockwave that flattened the surrounding basalt spires for miles. This was a battle of concepts, not just strength. The King fought with the law of the abyss, while Kai fought with the law of his own evolution.

The King lunged, its massive skeletal frame moving with a fluid, unnatural grace. It swiped horizontally, the gravity-blade leaving a scar of total darkness in the air.

Kai didn't retreat. He met the attack.

He channeled his entire pool of Evolution Points into Void Rend, wrapping his arm in a shroud of concentrated spatial energy. When his hand met the gravity-blade, the collision didn't sound like metal on metal. It sounded like the world screaming.

The two forces locked. Sparks of reality—white, blinding light—showered the cavern.

"My turn," Kai snarled.

He drove his other hand into the King’s chest, directly into the central mana-cluster that powered its skeletal frame. He didn't just strike; he bypassed the armor, his hand sinking into the King’s body as if it were water. He grabbed the core—a throbbing, obsidian heart—and squeezed.

The Hollow King stiffened. The pale light in its eyes flickered, turned red, and then died.

The titan crumbled, its massive frame turning into fine, grey dust that swirled away into the dark.

Kai stood alone in the silence of the Cradle of Shadows. The seismic charges from the surface were still detonating, the ceiling of the abyss raining down debris, but he didn't move. He felt the raw power coursing through him, his level and stats pushing past any limit the academy had ever theorized.

The path to the surface was closing, the tunnel he had arrived through collapsing under the weight of the mountain.

He didn't care. He looked deeper into the darkness of the Cradle. He could feel another presence—something much older, much hungrier, and much more intelligent than the King.

The Vances thought they were burying the truth. They had only opened the door to the basement.

Kai checked his status one last time. The transfer of the Vance files was at 99%.

"Let them watch," he said to the dark. "Let the whole empire see exactly what they've been feeding."

He turned away from the surface and began to walk deeper into the dark. The hunt was no longer about revenge; it was about reclaiming the world.
