The Sparring Grounds

Chapter 56 · 3,205 words

The sun had barely breached the horizon when the bell for the morning trials tolled. The sparring grounds, a vast circular arena paved with enchanted stone that could absorb the shock of Qi-enhanced strikes, were already filled with the low hum of hundreds of disciples.

Kai took his place in the queue. He watched as two disciples from the central barracks exchanged blows. They were fast, and their techniques were refined, but they fought with a rigid, predictable pattern. They were trying to overpower one another, forcing their Qi into external displays of force.

"Next," the overseeing instructor called out, not bothering to look up from his ledger. "Kai of the Greenwood Terrace versus Jaxon of the Iron-Fist Hall."

Jaxon was a hulking youth, known for his relentless, brute-force style. As he stepped into the arena, he sneered at Kai’s thin frame and plain indigo robes. "Don't expect me to hold back, 'Obsidian-Breather'. I’ll break your foundation before you can even draw a breath."

Kai stepped into the center of the arena, his movements effortless. He did not adopt a defensive stance. He didn't even raise his hands. He simply stood, his breathing synchronized with the Void-Pulsing Sutra.

Jaxon roared, lunging forward with a fist wreathed in shimmering, golden Qi. The force of the strike was enough to shatter stone.

To the onlookers, the strike connected. There was a sound like a thunderclap.

But Kai wasn't there.

Using the fluid momentum of his new Resonance Strike, Kai had shifted his center of gravity the instant Jaxon’s Qi surged. He hadn't dodged so much as he had allowed the energy of the attack to flow around him. Jaxon’s momentum carried him forward, his fist meeting nothing but air.

As Jaxon stumbled, his guard dropped for a fraction of a second.

Kai stepped into the gap. He placed a palm against Jaxon’s chest, not with force, but with a precise, vibrating tap.

The Resonance Strike activated.

He didn't output a massive amount of Qi. Instead, he injected a tiny, perfect pulse that matched the harmonic frequency of Jaxon’s internal Qi-flow. The sudden interference caused Jaxon’s own energy to implode. The hulking youth collapsed, his Qi flickering into chaotic disarray, his face pale with shock as his internal pathways were momentarily neutralized.

The arena went silent.

The instructor looked up, his quill hovering over the ledger. He stared at Kai, searching for the telltale signs of a high-level cultivation signature. Finding nothing but the calm, steady pulse of a novice, he blinked, confused.

"Winner," the instructor muttered, his voice lacking its usual authority. "Kai."

Kai bowed slightly and walked out of the arena. He hadn't drawn attention to his true strength; he had simply exploited the inefficiency of his opponent’s own power.

As he walked back toward the barracks, he felt the heavy, scrutinizing gaze of the Elders from the elevated viewing gallery. He ignored them. He had confirmed that his hybrid cultivation path worked, and he had done so without burning his bridges.

He reached his room and sat on his mat, closing his eyes to return to his cultivation. The path was open, and he had only just begun to walk it.
