"Everyone, protect yourselves!" Darrenās shout rang through the cave as he raised his shield above Lira and himself, releasing a powerful battle cry that echoed off the stone walls.
The Moss Creepers rained down like a twisted storm of vines and tendrils.
"Torin, burn them! Nina, wide sweep! Brother Soren, cover Ninaās right!" Darrenās commands came fast and clear, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Torinās response was immediate. He drew three arrows at once, their tips igniting with orange flames as he channeled his fire Mana. The flaming arrows streaked upward, striking the falling Creepers mid-descent. The creatures screeched as fire consumed their vine-like bodies, several falling as charred husks before they could even reach the ground.
Nina moved like a dancer through death. Her dual swords blurred in wide arcs, slicing through the Creepers that landed near her with deadly precision. Each strike was clean, efficient, her footwork flawless as she pivoted and flowed from one target to the next.
Sorenās initial spike of panic faded as he watched the team respond with practiced coordination.
āThereās no need to panic. They know what theyāre doing.ā
He shifted his position to Ninaās right flank, his spear thrusting forward to intercept a Creeper lunging toward her exposed side. The blade pierced through its central mass, and the creature collapsed in a twitching heap.
"Good!" Nina called out without looking back, already engaging the next target.
Darren held his position over Lira, his shield glowing faintly with a bronze light.
"Come to me, you bastards!"
His voice carried an unnatural weight, and the remaining Creepers shifted their attention toward him, drawn by his taunt technique.
The creatures surged toward the tank as one, but Darren planted his feet and activated his defensive skill. His shield expanded with a translucent barrier of hardened Mana, and the Creepersā tendrils slammed uselessly against it.
"Now!" Darren barked.
Torinās arrows found their marks, one after another, each shot precise and lethal. Nina closed the distance in a flash, her blades cutting through the clustered enemies with ruthless efficiency. Soren supported from the side, his spear finding gaps and finishing off wounded Creepers before they could retaliate.
Within minutes, the cave floor was littered with the corpses of Moss Creepers and the remaining Stone Beetles that had been caught in the chaos.
Darren lowered his shield, breathing steadily. "Everyone alright?"
"Iām fine!" Lira chirped, peeking out from behind her brother.
"Good here," Nina said, flicking green residue off her blades.
"No issues," Torin added, already retrieving his arrows.
Soren nodded. "Iām fine too."
"Good work, everyone. That couldāve gone worse if we panicked." Darrenās gaze swept over the group with approval. "Letās take a few minutes to catch our breath, then we keep moving."
The party settled briefly, checking their gear and recovering their stamina.
Soren wiped sweat from his brow, his heart rate gradually returning to normal. The coordination had been impressive. Each member knew their role and executed without hesitation.
āThis is what a real party looks like.ā
After a short rest, they pressed onward.
_____ __ _
An hour passed as they navigated deeper into the cave, clearing small groups of monsters along the way. The encounters became routine ā Darren taunted, Nina and Soren struck, Torin covered from range, and Lira stayed protected.
Finally, the narrow passage opened into a massive chamber.
The boss lair.
At the center of the cavern sat a creature four times the size of the regular Stone Beetles. Its dark gray shell was covered in jagged ridges, and its six legs were thick as tree trunks. Two massive mandibles clicked menacingly as it turned toward the intruders.
The Greater Stone Beetle.
Darren raised his shield. "Alright, everyone. This is it. Stay sharp and stick to the plan."
"First, check the surroundings. Look for ambush points."
The team spread out slightly, eyes scanning the walls, ceiling, and corners of the chamber.
Torin squinted upward. "Ceiling looks clear."
Nina circled to the right, her gaze sweeping over the shadows. "Nothing on this side."
Soren checked the left flank, his grip tight on his spear. The space seemed empty aside from the massive beetle at the center, but something felt off. "..."
"Looks clear," Lira said nervously from behind Darren.
Darren nodded slowly. "Alright. Stay alert anyway. Boss fights can get unpredictable."
He turned toward the Greater Stone Beetle and banged his sword against his shield.
The creatureās head snapped toward them, mandibles clicking loudly. Its legs shifted, and it let out a low, rumbling screech that echoed through the chamber.
"Here we go!" Darren charged forward, his shield raised.
The beetle lunged, its massive body surprisingly fast despite its size. Darren met it head-on, his shield glowing with reinforced Mana as he absorbed the impact. The ground beneath him cracked from the force, but he held firm.
"Nina, flank left! Torin, aim for the eyes! Brother Soren, right side with me!"
Nina darted to the left, her swords flashing as she struck at the beetleās leg joints. Torinās arrows streaked through the air, one embedding itself near the creatureās eye, causing it to rear back in fury.
Soren moved to the right, thrusting his spear at the gaps between the beetleās armored plates. The strikes landed, but the shell was thick, and the damage was minimal.
The battle continued for a few minutes, with them slowly pressuring the beetle to force it to use its ability and use the opportunity to finish it off.
After another minute, the beetle reared up suddenly, its front legs lifting off the ground.
"Fall back!" Darren shouted.
The creature slammed down with devastating force.
The ground shook violently, cracks spiderwebbing across the stone floor. Everyone staggered, losing their balance from the shockwave. Well, everyone except Darren, who planted his shield and held his ground through sheer strength.
But in that split second, Sorenās instincts screamed at him.
A chill ran down his spine.
Something moved in his peripheral vision ā a shadow that shouldnāt be there, shifting along the wall behind them.
"Be careful!"
The words barely left his mouth before thick vines exploded from the darkness.
Not from the ceiling. From the wall itself.
What heād thought was moss-covered stone suddenly unfurled, revealing a massive tangle of green tendrils and a pulsing core hidden in the center. An Elite Moss Creeper had been there the entire time, camouflaged perfectly against the cave wall.
Its vines lashed out like whips.
Soren reacted on instinct, activating Quick Step. His body blurred forward, and he threw himself toward Nina, whose back was turned toward the attack.
He grabbed her shoulder hard and yanked her aside.
A vine thick as his arm slammed into the ground where sheād been standing, cracking the stone.
But he wasnāt fast enough to dodge completely.
Another tendril caught him across the ribs, the impact like being struck with a club. Pain exploded through his side, and he stumbled, gasping.
"Brother Soren!" Liraās voice rang out.
Darren spun immediately, raising his shield to intercept a vine aimed at Lira. The strike rang loud against the metal, but his barrier held.
Torin tried to retreat, loosing an arrow toward the Creeperābut a vine coiled around his ankle mid-step.
"Whaā"
He hit the ground hard, his bow clattering away. Another tendril wrapped around his torso before he could recover, constricting tightly. His face twisted in pain as the vines squeezed.
"Torin!" Ninaās eyes went wide, her grip on her swords faltering. Her brother was being crushed right in front of her.
The Greater Stone Beetle, sensing the chaos, charged toward Darren and Lira with renewed aggression.
Nina froze, torn between her brother and the boss, panic flashing across her face.
"Nina!" Sorenās shout cut through her paralysis. "Kill the Creeper! Now!"
His voice was sharp enough to āwake upā Nina.
Her head snapped toward him, her eyes meeting his for a split second.
Then she moved.
Her legs glowed with red Mana as she activated her movement technique, her body launching forward like a bolt. Flames ignited along her swords as she shot toward the Elite Moss Creeperās core.
Soren gritted his teeth against the pain in his ribs and forced himself upright. The beetle was charging. Darren couldnāt handle both threats alone.
He channeled cold Mana into his spear, frost condensing along the blade until it gleamed with crystalline ice.
The beetle reared back, preparing another slam.
Soren sprinted forward, ignoring the burning pain in his side. He drove his spear toward the creatureās exposed weak point beneath its shell, where the legs connected to the body.
The icy blade pierced through after a brief struggle.
"Scree-!"
The beetleās body convulsed as frost spread from the wound.
At the same moment, Ninaās swords crossed in a blazing arc, cutting clean through the Creeperās pulsing core.
The vines went limp just as quickly.
Torin collapsed to the ground, coughing and gasping for air.
But the beetle wasnāt finished. It thrashed wildly, one massive leg sweeping toward Soren, who was too close and off-balance to dodge.
He could only raise his spear to parry, gritting his teeth as the strike connected.
"ARGH!"
The force sent shockwaves through his arms and drove him to one knee. Even with his Fortified Body Constitution and Pain Resistance dulling the worst of it, the impact felt like his bones were cracking. His right shoulder screamed in protest, and his grip on the spear nearly slipped.
Darren lunged forward, his shield slamming into the beetleās mandibles just before they could reach the fallen Soren and the exhausted Nina.
The impact drove him back a full meter, his boots grinding against stone.
"F-Finish it!"
