Chapter 20: Teammates Like Pigs
âCome over, but be careful. Who knows what traps they left behind.â Old Hu could see Fatty and Hu Yifei were practically vibrating with impatience, so he waved them over. Maybe theyâd find something useful.
Yifei and Fatty eagerly hurried forward while Chen Yuze and Old Hu continued inspecting the area. Chen Yuze rummaged through a skeletonâs backpack and pulled out a notebook. At the same time, Old Hu found one as well. Chen Yuze flipped through the pages, but most of the contents were indecipherable to him. Shouldâve studied harder. Too late now.
THUD!
Old Hu and Chen Yuze whipped around, teeth clenched. These two idiots had been startling them all nightâthis time, they nearly jumped out of their skins. Again?!
They turned to see Yifei standing innocently while Fatty lay sprawled face-first in front of her. Yifei blinked down at him. âWhyâd you suddenly faceplant? You were walking just fine.â
Groaning, Fatty pushed himself up and brushed aside the leaves beneath him. âThe hellâs this big crate doing here? No wonder I tripped! Old Hu, come check this outâmight be treasure!â
Old Hu sighed, picking up a commanderâs sword from beside the headless skeleton. He unsheathed itâthe blade was still polished, the edge sharp. Chen Yuzeâs eyes gleamed. Perfect. He remembered Guan Gu was supposed to visit their apartment soon. This genuine Japanese officerâs sword would make an amazing gift.
âYou like this, kid?â Old Hu noticed Chen Yuze eyeing the blade. To him, it was just a weaponânothing special.
âYeah. A lot.â Chen Yuze scanned the area, hoping to find another.
Unfortunately, after some searching, all he turned up were two bayonets, a rusted Japanese pistol, a decently preserved rifle, and some bullets. Mostly junk. Disappointed, Chen Yuze sighed.
âTake it, then. I like your attitudeâconsider it a friendship gift.â Old Hu offered the sword.
Chen Yuze reached out but stopped halfway. âDonât get me wrongâI appreciate it. But we donât know whatâs waiting in that tomb tomorrow. Youâll need it more than me. After we get back, Iâll trade you one of my guns for it. Wonât shortchange you. If youâre really going into this line of work, youâll need proper gear.â
Old Hu grinned. âCanât say no to that. Iâve been eyeing that pistol of yours.â
âDeal. Now letâs see what Fatty dug up.â Chen Yuze smirked. That pistol was cheapâbarely anyĺ ć˘çš. If this mission succeeded, heâd have over a hundredĺ ć˘çš to spare. He could buy a dozen of them.
The two walked over to where Fatty and Yifei were gathered around a large crate. After confirming it was safe, Old Hu nodded, and Fatty eagerly pried it openâonly to deflate instantly.
âWhat kind of junk is this? Whereâs the treasure?!â Inside lay a pile of rusted tools and scrap metal.
Chen Yuze and Old Hu exchanged uneasy glances.
âThatâs a Luoyang shovel.â
âAnd a German entrenching tool.â
âA Mauser C96âŚâ
As they pulled everything out, their expressions darkened. Chen Yuze exhaled sharply. âFellow tomb raiders. You think someone beat us to it?â
âDoubt it. If theyâd succeeded, they wouldnât have left this stuff behind. No oneâs that wasteful.â Old Hu frowned.
âTake what we can use. Weâll figure it out back at camp.â Chen Yuze decided.
âProbably not.â Yifei pointed at the nearby skeletons. âThese must be the ones who owned this gear. If they died here, they obviously failed. No one would leave their comradesâ bodies to rot if theyâd succeeded. Plus, you found usable guns and bayonetsâseems like the Japanese executed them.â
âYifeiâs right. No way weâre turning back now after coming all this way!â Fatty huffed. Were they just supposed to go home without even seeing the tomb?
Chen Yuze nodded. His system wouldnât mislead himâand he wasnât leaving empty-handed.
They hauled the tools back to camp. Old Hu flipped through the notebooks while Chen Yuze handed his overâhe couldnât read them anyway, though he took photos for later translation. Who knew? Maybe heâd return to this world someday. The system worked in mysterious ways.
âYifeiâs instincts were spot-on.â Old Hu chuckled, skimming the notes. âThe tomb raiders did fail. The Japanese caught and executed them. No loot nearby means they never got in.â
âAlso, these idiots got lost wandering the woods. When they heard from the raiders that Japan had surrendered, they offered themselves.â Old Hu smirked. âBut hereâs the kicker, the Kwantung Armyâs fortress is nearby. We might hit the jackpot.â
