Chapter 34: âHah! Enemy General, Surrender Your Life!â
âKid! Old Hu! Think of somethingâif this keeps up, even Yifei wonât last long!â The chubby guy was starting to panic. The rats were endless, and even with Yifeiâs help, they couldnât kill them all. Plus, Yifeiâs stamina would drain fast at this rate.
âWait⊠the smell⊠itâs the smell!â Old Hu suddenly remembered what Hu Yifei had mentioned earlier. Though he hated to admit it, women were more sensitive to these things. Yifei had said she smelled something strangeâthat must be the key. Otherwise, the rats wouldnât have gone berserk like this. He also noticed that some rats collapsed after running for a while.
This had to be part of the tombâs defense mechanism. There must be something lethal to the rats here; otherwise, the tomb wouldnât have remained pristine for thousands of years. Something had kept the rats away before, just like nowâthey died shortly after entering.
The fact that they were charging in recklessly meant something had changed. Whatever was in the palace lanterns must have driven them mad, making them rush in despite the danger. The only difference since they entered was the lanterns lighting up. There had to be something in the oil that triggered this frenzy.
Chen Yuze noticed it tooâthe flames in the lanterns were growing larger. He glanced up at the structure above. The ceiling was made of glazed tiles. If the rats damaged them, theyâd all be buried alive. And if the lanterns kept burning like this, the rising heat might shatter the tiles. Worse, the rats themselves could catch fire, turning the whole place into an inferno.
âPut out the lanternsânow! If the rats destroy them, weâre doomed!â Chen Yuze and Old Hu shouted as they rushed forward. They had to extinguish the flames before things escalated.
âSqueakâ!â
A sharp, piercing screech echoed through the tomb. Chen Yuze turned toward the sound and saw an enormous ratâas big as a catâstanding atop a broken pillar.
At its command, the rats became even more frenzied, attacking with terrifying coordination. No longer a disorganized swarm, they moved like an army.
âYifei! Cut off the head, and the body will die!â Chen Yuze yelled, raising his gun and firing at the giant rat. But his range practice didnât translate well to real combatâhe missed.
âRat King? Leave it to me! Watch me slay the enemy general and claim victory!â Hu Yifei spotted the alpha rat and charged without hesitation, her sword flashing. The smaller rats fell before her like wheat before a scythe.
Old Hu and the chubby guy provided cover fire, keeping the rats from swarming the lanterns while Chen Yuze desperately tried to extinguish them. The four of them were in chaosâfighting, defending, and putting out fires all at once.
Yifei moved like a whirlwind, closing the distance in seconds. She raised her sword and declared:
âHah! I, General Hu Yifei, stand before you! Surrender your life, vermin!â
She swung her blade, but the massive rat was surprisingly agile. It dodged and retaliated with a flying kick. Yifei arched backward, narrowly avoiding the attack, then spun around, locking eyes with the beast.
The tension between them was palpableâsparks practically flew in the air as the rat hunched low, ready to pounce.
âYouâre not bad⊠for a rat. But victory will be mine!â Yifei struck first.
Somehow, the battle between them felt like an epic duel between two legendary warriorsâno, a warrior and a rat warlord.
As Yifei clashed with the monstrous rodent, the swarm lost its coordination. Though they still attacked, their assault weakened without their leaderâs command. Seizing the chance, Old Hu and the others extinguished more lanterns.
With the flames dying down, the ratsâ frenzy subsidedâproving their theory right. The lantern oil had been driving them mad.
But the dimming light made it harder for Yifei to fight. Chen Yuze tossed a glow stick near her, illuminating the battlefield.
The distraction almost cost Yifei dearlyâshe had to drop her sword to avoid the ratâs bite. Seeing her disarmed, the rat seized its chance, leaping straight for her throat in a final, lethal strike.
Old Hu and the chubby guy shouted in panic:
âYifei! Duck!â
But Yifei didnât move. She stood frozen, watching the rat soar toward her.
Chen Yuze, closer to her, saw the cold smirk on her face.
âPerfect. You fell right into my trap.â
As the rat hung midair, helpless, Yifeiâs expression turned triumphant.
âIs this it? Hu Yifeiâs ultimate techniqueâBare-Handed Rat Execution?â Chen Yuze thought to himself.
As the apex predator of rats in the Love Apartment, Yifei had her own methods. And her most feared move wasâ
Killing rats with her bare hands.
Sure enough, with the rat unable to dodge in midair, Yifei didnât hold back. Her right hand rose high, then swung down with devastating force.
âDie, pest! HYAHâ!â
The rat took the full brunt of her strike, slamming into the ground with a THUD.
It twitched once, spat blood, then went limp.
Dead.
