Chapter 45: A Close Call
As soon as Chen Yuze reached the surface, he heard Hu Yifei shouting, âIs everyone out? Sound off!â When it mattered, Hu Yifei was reliableâat least to her teammates. She wasnât the type to abandon them and run.
âOne,â the fat man groaned, dropping Lingzi onto the ground before weakly responding.
âTwo, three,â Old Hu answered for Lingzi, who had been slung over the fat manâs shoulder the whole way. The constant jostling had left her stomach pressed against his shoulder, and now that she was finally set down, she looked like she was about to vomitâno chance of her calling out a number.
âFour!â Chen Yuze lazily plopped down on the ground before deciding to just lie back. For some reason, he felt unusually warmâprobably from the frantic sprint earlier. He needed to rest, cool down, and catch his breath.
âWait, weâre missing someone. Werenât there five of us?â Hu Yifei blinked in confusion, anxiously staring at the cave entrance. She had the nagging feeling sheâd forgotten something but couldnât put her finger on it.
âYouâre a person too, you know. You havenât called out yet,â Chen Yuze said dryly, watching her with amusement. He knew exactly what sheâd forgotten, but he wasnât about to tell her. Let her figure it out herself.
âAll the stuffâs still here. At least this trip wasnât a waste,â the fat man said, eyeing the two backpacks nearby. These were the treasures Hu Yifei had hauled out from the side chambers earlier while they were searching for Lingzi. Chen Yuze had handpicked the best itemsâeach one priceless on the outside.
âAnd thatâs not all. We grabbed a few more things, though we didnât have time to check them properly. Just stuffed them in blindlyâno idea if theyâre actually valuable,â Old Hu said, patting the backpack theyâd brought out. The situation had been too chaotic; theyâd just grabbed whatever was within reach.
âAt least we got something out of it. So, boys, how about we treat ourselves? A good drink, a nice bathâright now, Iâm dead tired,â the fat man chuckled, eyeing their haul. This trip hadnât been for nothing.
âOh crap! My vanity case! I have to go back!â Hu Yifei suddenly remembered her prized possession and, without thinking, grabbed her gear and made a dash for the cave. This was her first tomb-raiding souvenirâa gift from Chen Yuze, no less. She couldnât just leave it behind. It was the first thing heâd ever given her, and she hadnât even had the chance to admire it properly, let alone wear a piece or two to show off.
âWhoa, hold up, sis! Letâs talk this through!â The fat man and Old Hu scrambled to their feet, each grabbing one of Hu Yifeiâs legs to stop her from charging back in.
âCome on, girl, this isnât the time to risk your life for loot! Since when are you more money-hungry than the fat man? If you really want something, weâll pick a few pieces from his share. But going back down now is suicide!â Old Hu panted, barely holding on as Hu Yifei dragged them forward. Even exhausted, her strength was terrifying.
âNo way! This isnât just my first tomb trophyâXiao Ze picked it out specially for me! I donât care if I have to blow this place up, Iâm getting it back!â Hu Yifei was furious. Aside from the golden dagger in her hand (which she didnât even care for), sheâd come out empty-handed. This whole trip had been a bust for her.
âRelax, Yifei.â Chen Yuze unzipped his backpack and pulled out a small box. âLook what Iâve got.â
âMy vanity case!â Hu Yifeiâs eyes lit up as she rushed over, snatching the box and cradling it like a treasure. During her fight with the giant serpent, sheâd completely forgotten about itâsheâd assumed it had been destroyed. Yet here it was, safe in Chen Yuzeâs hands.
Truth be told, Chen Yuze had grabbed it on a whim. When Hu Yifei had charged out earlier and heâd been injured, Old Hu and the fat man had helped him to the side to rest. The box had been left nearby, and while the others were busy fighting the serpent, heâd quietly slipped it into his spatial backpack. Heâd planned to surprise her with it back at Love Apartment, but seeing how much it meant to her, he pretended heâd had it all along.
âSorry for the trouble. Consider this one oursâyou two can pick from the rest first,â Chen Yuze said, watching as the fat man and Old Hu finally relaxed. Now it was time to divide the spoils.
Old Hu shook his head. âDonât even joke about that, Xiao Chen. If it werenât for you and Yifei, weâd still be stuck in thereâforget about loot. This little thing is just a bonus for Yifei. Consider it our thanks.â
âYeah, itâs just a vanity case. Think of it as our wedding gift to Yifei,â the fat man chimed in. Sure, he loved treasure, but being stingy after surviving life-and-death together? Thatâd be shameful. In his eyes, they were brothers nowâeven if Chen Yuze took the lionâs share, he wouldnât complain.
âThen weâll take you up on that. How about we find a place to rest up? Iâm beat,â Chen Yuze said, dropping the subject. Theyâd made their stance clearârefusing further would just be rude.
âLetâs head to Lingziâs place. We can process the serpent hide there, have a proper meal, and you two can try some authentic Northeastern stew. Before you leave, weâll pack you some local specialties too. How about we spend a couple of days here? Do some hunting, walk the dogsâreal countryside living,â Old Hu suggested. Theyâd already discussed this earlier, and processing the serpent hide would take time anyway.
Besides, Old Hu wanted to learn how Chen Yuze identified valuable artifacts. With the serpent hide needing time to cure, theyâd have plenty of opportunities to exchange knowledge.
