Chapter 31 31: Hoi-Poi Capsule

Chapter 31 Β· 6,004 words

Tony poured two glasses of scotch, the amber liquid catching the light of the setting sun through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge. He handed one to Ethan, leaning back against the marble counter.

"Alright, Merlin. Spill. How does it work?" Tony asked, gesturing vaguely with his glass. "The sparks, the portals, the physics-defying parlor tricks. Is it mental projection? Nanites? Or are you actually tapping into some cosmic microwave background radiation I haven't indexed yet?"

Ethan took a slow sip, letting the burn of the scotch settle. "It's magic, Tony. You're trying to use a ruler to measure the flavor of a steak. It doesn't quite translate."

Tony snorted. "Everything has a logic, even if the logic is weird. Give me six months and a decent labβ€”I'll have a suit that can shut down your 'mystical' frequencies before you can even wiggle your fingers."

Ethan let out a genuine bark of laughter. "That is so like you. The world just saw you fly in a high-tech toaster, and your first instinct is to try and build an anti-magic cage. Good luck with that, Stark. You'll need it."

The two sat in a rare moment of quiet, the hum of the city vibrating through the glass. The tension from the battle with Stane was fading, replaced by the strange, burgeoning camaraderie between two men who both knew too much about the future.

"I need another favor," Ethan said, his voice dropping the playful edge.

Tony groaned, rolling his eyes. "Another one? The ink isn't even dry on Gwen's new birth certificate. I basically just gave you a free pass into the US legal system. What now? You want a private jet? A Stark Industries internship for your 'associate'?"

"I want you to build something for me," Ethan said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a sleek, black USB drive.

*****

Tony caught the drive with a flick of his wrist, looking at it with a flat stare. "Make something? Sorry, man, but the forge is closed for repairs. I don't make magical artifacts, enchanted amulets, or glowing sticks. I do science. Hard, quantifiable, repeatable science."

"Just plug it in, Tony," Ethan said, his expression neutral. "It's more 'science' than anything you've ever seen."

Tony gave an exaggerated, suffering sigh and walked over to his main terminal. "J.A.R.V.I.S., run a virus scan. I don't want any 'sorcerer' malware in my mainframe."

"Scanning... Drive is clean, sir. Rendering files now."

A massive, intricate holographic blueprint exploded into the air above the lab table. It was a dense, glowing web of mechanical schematics, particle collision equations, and energy containment matrixes.

Tony, who had just picked up a mug of cold coffee to take a sip, took one look at the hologram and violently spat his drink across the desk. He dropped the mug, coffee splashing over his expensive shoes, and practically pressed his face into the blue light.

"J.A.R.V.I.S., isolate the containment array. Expand section four! Now!" Tony muttered, his hands flying through the data, swiping and zooming with manic energy. "What... what the hell am I looking at? This isn't magic. This is... localized spatial folding via Higgs field manipulation? The math... the math is gorgeous."

"It's called Hoi-Poi Capsule technology," Ethan said, leaning against the desk, watching the billionaire lose his mind. "Consider it alien tech. It's a device designed to compress matter and store objects of any mass or size into a pocket-sized cylinder."

Tony's eyes were darting frantically across the floating equations. "This is insane. The energy requirements to nullify mass without causing a localized black hole should be impossible. But this schematic... it bypasses the square-cube law entirely! It's not shrinking the atoms like Pym's theoretical nonsense; it's actually pocketing the object into a micro-dimensional fold!"

Tony finally stopped swiping, turning to look at Ethan with a mixture of absolute awe and pure, unfiltered adrenaline.

"Ethan... where the hell did you get this?"

"I have my sources," Ethan smiled, his eyes glinting. "So, is it feasible?"

****

Tony looked back at the blueprints, his brain already calculating the manufacturing costs. "Can I build it? The sub-atomic containment matrix requires a synthetic alloy capable of handling extreme quantum stress... Vibranium would be ideal, but Palladium-laced titanium might hold if we super-cool the primary housing. And the routing micro-chips... I'll need to fabricate entirely new silicon-graphene boards just to handle the data processing speed."

He rubbed his chin, the gears turning at a thousand miles an hour.

"It's going to take me a few weeks just to synthesize the materials, and the fabrication process is going to cost millions," Tony said, a wild, obsessed grin spreading across his face. "Not to mention the current manufacturing tech isn't even advanced enough to cope with the precision required for the trigger mechanism. It'll be difficult for now... but in the next one or two years? Yeah. I think I can make it happen."

"Thank you, Tony," Ethan said, giving him an appreciative nod. "I knew I could count on that massive, over-inflated brain of yours. But don't worry, I won't make you work for free."

Tony raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You going to pay me in gold doubloons?"

"Better," Ethan smirked. "Once you perfect the manufacturing, you can keep a percentage of the production. I'm not that stingy. Think about it, Tony... it would be a hell of a lot easier to carry that 'tin can' of yours in your pocket instead of needing a robotic gantry and a flight crew every time you want to suit up."

Tony looked at the hologram of the tiny capsule, then at the Mark III suit standing in the corner of the lab. The image of his entire arsenal tucked into a pocket-sized tube made his eyes widen.

"Yeah," Tony whispered, a sharp, dangerous glint in his eyes. "Yeah, that would change everything."
