Keira’s eyes were cold as she spoke, making Oliver pause for a moment.

Lewis, however, looked directly at her and asked, “Keira, do you mean to say that they agreed?”

Just as Keira was about to nod, Oliver scoffed. “What are you thinking? I’ve had someone look into this matter a long time ago! The selection of volunteer patients in Clance this time has been personally overseen by Nora. I’ve heard that the selection was extremely impartial, only including patients who meet the criteria for their clinical trial. No matter how strong one’s connections are, others have no chance of getting a spot!”

After saying this and without waiting for Keira to speak, he abruptly changed the subject. “However, Selena got one!”

Keira was slightly taken aback when she heard this.

She hadn’t even received the list from Clance yet, so how could someone have already secured a spot?

Oliver laughed. “Isn’t it natural for her to help the family? Selena has always been grateful for the nurturing she received from the Horton family.”

He glanced at the time and continued. “Selena will arrive tomorrow. She told me that she would bring her boyfriend this time, and they plan to get engaged. Dad, her boyfriend is from the Cobb family, one of the five major families of Clan! If our two families can successfully form a marital alliance, we won’t have to fear the Davis family’s suppression any longer!”

Upon hearing the words “Davis family,” Lewis’s expression grew even colder.

Keira noticed his reaction and, considering what she had observed since coming to the Horton family, turned to look at Jake and saw his face had turned ashen.

It seemed that this Selena was indeed Oliver’s illegitimate daughter; she wondered if she was Jake’s older or younger sister.

As she was thinking, Nathan, thrilled, said, “What? That’s excellent! Selena has lived up to our expectations. When she wanted to study in Clance, I said that she wasn’t meant for a mundane life! If she could form a marriage alliance with the Cobb family, we must not treat her unfairly! When Selena returns to Oceanion this time, let her stay at our home!”

Upon hearing this, Melissa immediately shrieked, “Dad! How can an illegitimate daughter live in our house?!”

Nathan glanced at her without a word.

But Oliver immediately glared at her. “What illegitimate daughter? Watch your tone! That’s Jake’s sister! She’s going to get married from the Horton family when Horton and Cobb’s marital alliance is formed! That’s the right thing to do!”

Melissa’s eyes teared up. “But she…”

“Shut up!” Oliver yelled, silencing Melissa immediately.

Only then did Oliver turn to look at Jake and indirectly criticized him. “So what if Selena is an illegitimate daughter? Who among you can compare to her contributions to the Horton family? You all just focus on romantic affairs; with this attitude, how can you grow and strengthen the Horton business? If you lack the ability and can’t let go of your hang-ups, then step aside. Don’t be a hindrance…”

These words seemed to be targeting Jake, yet every word was a pointed accusation against Lewis.

Lewis had been keeping his distance from everyone in Clance because of the Davis family matter.

However, Lewis’s mother, resentful of Nathan’s deception in marriage, expressly forbade any association with people related to the Davis family from any dealings with the Horton family.

Privately, people said that if only Lewis would humble himself and ask for forgiveness, his mother, despite her resentment toward Nathan, wouldn’t possibly be so heartless toward her own son!

But with Lewis’s character, how could he possibly go to Clance to find her?

And so, the business between the Horton family and Clance has been at a standstill for all these years…

Some veterans in the Horton family and company who knew the inside story complained about Lewis, feeling that he was the one holding back the Horton’s Clance sector.

Yet Keira found it laughable.

It was clearly Nathan who committed the mistake because he was the one who deceived in marriage. Why should he not go to Clance to seek forgiveness from the Davis family? Instead, why should they force Lewis to go?

Considering the fact that Lewis’s mother had a C-section when she was seven months pregnant and left him at the Horton family’s doorstep, indifferent to whether he lived or died, how could he possibly go and ask her for anything?

Oliver was simply beyond words and so double-standard!

Lewis couldn’t be bothered to argue these points, but Keira felt heartbroken and retorted. “Mr. Horton… Even if Lewis hasn’t proactively contacted Clance, hasn’t he managed the Horton family very well? As long as the Horton family becomes self-reliant with strong technology, we don’t need to bow to anyone, and others will come to us. Didn’t the Allen family approach us to sign a contract? Isn’t that the best proof? Seeking reconciliation by bowing down will only be looked down upon! The Horton family is, after all, the wealthiest in Oceanion, do we have no pride?”

Lewis was slightly taken aback and looked at her in surprise.

Over the years, the girl must have been misunderstood by many, hence her attitude in always speaking her mind.

But now she had spoken all this for him, making him lower his gaze, and a faint smile appeared at the corner of his lips.

He had long stopped regarding those people in the Horton family seriously. Their words couldn’t hurt him, but when Keira stood up for him, Lewis still found it gratifying.

He even felt a sour warmth surging up in his chest, filling him completely.

Oliver narrowed his eyes and sneered. “Is pride more important, or is Grandma’s illness? We are currently unable to get the medication precisely because we lack Clance connections. But Selena studied in Clance for a few years, helping us to expand our network, and getting the medication this time proves that!”

He looked at Lewis. “In this world, sometimes you have to bow when necessary. We were born into the Horton family, so we must give more for our family. Lewis, if it weren’t for Selena this time, what would we do? Knowing that there is a special medication, yet Grandma can’t wait until it comes to market. Wouldn’t you be filled with bitter regret?”

The quickest phase from clinical trials to a drug being marketed takes at least a year.

Upon hearing this, Keira sneered, about to retort, when her phone rang again.

She frowned and looked at her phone, only to find that it was Mrs. Olsen calling!

Keira’s pupils contracted, and she immediately picked it up. Mrs. Olsen’s weak voice came through. “Keira, I’m awake…”

Keira’s eyes reddened as tears instantly began to fall, and she said straight away, “I’m coming back now…”

She had a lot she wanted to tell Mrs. Olsen.

She also wanted to ask Mrs. Olsen who her father really was…
