Chapter 444
âŠ.
Ellis was startled by the words. He hadnât expected that at a time like this, Mary would still insist on a paternity test. Was she determined to force him into a divorce?
He let out a scoff.
Mary was on the verge of collapse and screamed, âEllis, I want you to see the results! Youâll see with your own eyes that the child you just killed was your own!â
âMary⊠thereâs no need to provoke me anymore. I know youâre doing this just to force me to divorce you, but I wonât do it.â
Suddenly, Ellis reached out and gently stroked her head.
Mary was almost driven to the edge by his gesture and cried out, âEllis, you bastard! Bastard!â
She slumped into the seat, close to despair. With both hands on her abdomen, she felt the pain emanating from the inside and was overwhelmed by it.
Just then, the sound of furious banging came from outside. Ellis turned his head and saw Keira trying to open the door. She seemed enraged and was pounding on the glass. Unfortunately, the carâs windows were too sturdy to be smashed open.
Ellis had no intention of getting out of the car; he pushed himself up from the seat and leaped into the driverâs seat. Just as he was about to start the car and leave, another vehicle suddenly blocked his way, cutting off his escape route.
Ellis frowned as he saw the front car window roll down to reveal Lewis Hortonâs face.
Ellis sighed softly. Turning his head again, he saw Keira standing outside the window, signaling him to let Mary go.
Ellis lowered his gaze and, after a moment, opened the door.
The moment the door was unlocked, Keira pulled open the rear door and looked straight at Mary. âMary, are you okay?â
Maryâs face was covered in tears. With her hands on her belly, she cried to Keira. âThe child, the child is gone⊠Keira, my child is gone!â
Keira reached out to her. âDonât be afraid. Weâre going to the hospital now. Come with me!â
Mary hurriedly exited the car and was helped into the hospital by Keira. The reporters swarmed behind them, asking Ellis, âMr. Ellis, what just happened? You and your wife didnât come out of the car. Were you arguing?â
Ellis merely lowered his eyes slightly and said indifferently, âMy wife suddenly felt unwell, and the child⊠is gone.â
This statement caused an uproar among the reporters. The child was gone? Just now? It all seemed like a clumsy cover-up!
The crowd felt they had caught on to a piece of news and immediately raised their microphones as they pressed forward. âMr. Ellis, what exactly happened to this child?â
âDid you intentionally induce an abortion?â
âThis child isnât actually yours, is it?â
Ellisâs eyes flickered to the doorway, where he saw Keira supporting Mary into the hospital gate. His eyes glinted, and he turned to the speaker. âItâs illegal to fabricate stories without evidence! If you continue to slander my wifeâs innocence, the legal department of the Olsen Group will serve you with a cease and desist letter!â
The reporters were taken aback.
Ellis then addressed them, enunciating every word. âMy wife and I are deeply in love, and Iâm also very upset about the loss of our child, but I believe that my wife and I will face it together. Now, if youâll excuse me, I need to see my wife!â After saying these words, he strode into the hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Olsen exchanged a glance and immediately followed him inside.
The Davis family arrived a little later. Just as they got out of the car, they heard the âbad newsâ and were stunned in place.
Mr. Davisâs face first stiffened, but then he brightened with joy. âThe child is gone, itâs a good thing, a good thing! Now no one can say the child isnât Mr. EllisâsâŠâ
Mrs. Davis showed a rare hint of concern. They hurried into the hospital.
This hospital was the closest to the South residence. Ellis hurriedly caught up to Mary and Keira, who were in front of him. They went into the gynecology department, and Mary lay down on the bed, curling up in pain as if it was unbearable.
Seeing this, a flicker of distress crossed Ellisâs eyes. If he could, he would take the pain for her. But there was no way.
Ellis stepped forward, about to speak, when Mary suddenly erupted. She pushed him away fiercely. âGet away from me! I donât want to see you!â
Ellis took a step back. âMary, donât be anxious. Youâre weak now, and you need to take good care of yourself. IâŠâ
âEllis, I want to have a paternity test!â Mary was still shouting out these words. âEven if this child is gone, I still want to do it!â
She looked at Ellis, her eyes filled with loathing. Being looked at like that, Ellis felt extremely uncomfortable.
Before he could say anything, Mrs. Davis stepped forward. âMary, letâs not make a fuss⊠We wonât do the paternity test anymore. The child is gone, itâs over now!â
Mary looked coldly at Mrs. Davis. âSo, you never believed me from the beginning, right?â
Mrs. Davis was speechless.
Maryâs gaze then fell on Mr. Davis, and upon seeing his evasive eyes, she scoffed.
Mr. Davis immediately became angry. âWhat are you laughing at? If it werenât for your own immodesty, could things have escalated to this point? You should be thankful that Mr. Ellis isnât pursuing the matter, so let it rest! Canât you understand and not drag our Davis family into this?â
These words were like knives and stabbed into Maryâs heart one after another, making her smile bitterly, feeling how pathetic her life was. Her parent exploited her.
She clenched her fists tightly. Ellis also slowly said, âMary, the reporters are all outside, if we did it, it wouldnât stay hidden. Be a good girl, donât make it so ugly.â
Mary knew they didnât believe her. She could only place her last hope on Keira. She looked toward Keira, her eyes brimming with tears, âKeira, can you help me?â
Her child couldnât have disappeared so unjustly. Otherwise, she would feel suffocated for the rest of her life.
Now she felt as if her chest was about to explode.
Keira saw her on the verge of collapse and stepped forward decisively. âI can. Mary, stay put. Iâll take care of it.â
Leaving those words behind, she strode to Ellis. As Ellis opened his mouth to speak, Keira closed in and punched him in the abdomen. Ellis winced in pain and doubled over.
Keira took the opportunity to pluck two strands of hair from his head and methodically placed them into the sample bag.
