Nara had just finished writing a sentence and was about to show it to Garyâs mother when the latter knocked the notebook out of her hand and pointed at her, cursing angrily. âYou canât even speak. What makes you think youâre good enough for my son?â
Nara looked at her in astonishment.
She waved her hands frantically, her mouth opening and closing as if she wanted to say something but couldnât manage to speak.
Garyâs mother immediately stepped forward and slapped Nara across the face with a swing of her hand!
Nara toppled to the ground. She was already frail, and now, she could taste blood in her mouth once againâŠ
This taste was all too familiar to Nara lately.
Jackson and Austin had abused her. When she jumped off the rooftop, her mouth was filled with this very tasteâŠ
Clutching her face, Nara looked at Garyâs mother in shock.
Garyâs mother continued to glare at her. âLet me tell you, stop messing with my son! Stay away from him!â
Nara was utterly dumbfounded.
She looked helplessly at Garyâs mother, wanting to say it wasnât like thatâŠ
Between her and Gary, Gary had always been the one who took the initiative.
Being mute, she always felt inferior and had been struggling for life since she was young, fighting to escape poverty. How would she have the time to fall in love?
Gary courted her at university, helping herâŠ
She remembered that Gary looked down on her at first, thinking she didnât deserve to be the top student. Since she was mute, he wondered how she could succeed in medicine if she couldnât communicate with patients.
But later, in the lab, Gary got frightened by a dissected mouse and vomited until he was half dead, while only Nara remained calm, undisturbed by anything.

âHello, is this seat taken? May I sit here?â
âHello, are you reading alone? Thereâs no one next to you. May I sit here?â
And when she was holding many books and carrying a water bottle, the boy with a bright smile would suddenly appear and take things from her hands. âLet me help you!â
She had refused him at first.
But Gary was like an indestructible cockroach, always showing up around her when she felt sleepy from studying or wanted to stretch during a moment of wearinessâŠ

She had asked him if he minded that she couldnât speak.
Gary responded with a smile, âIâve always hated those chatty girls; I find them so annoying. When Iâm with you, I always find a sense of peace in my soul.â
Nara didnât know how to respond.
Later, Gary took her hand, and when she tried to pull away, he didnât let go. âNara, give me a chance and give yourself one too. Isnât it worth a try, at least while weâre in university?â
They had been dating for two years since then.
With graduation looming, Gary had been talking about taking her home to meet his parents.
Nara was very nervous, always afraid that Garyâs family would disapprove⊠Gary said they wouldnât and even mentioned that his mother loved him very much and would like her for his sake as wellâŠ
Until⊠after Gary returned home, he never went back to school.
The two of them had been in touch recently. Gary would message her, asking how she was doing and telling her that his mother was sick and that he was taking care of her at homeâŠ
Nara asked him if his parents had any objections.
Garyâs reply was straightforward. âMy dad listens to my mom, and my mom listens to me. I told her you are mute, and she doesnât mind.â
Nara thought that his mother really didnât mind and was looking forward to meeting the latter.

Garyâs mother was almost poking Naraâs face with her finger. âLittle slut, you know how to seduce men with this act, right? My son is naive and got fooled by your appearance! I wonât be deceived! All you want is to marry someone rich, right? Let me tell you, I donât approve of you and my son!!â
After roaring out these words, Garyâs mother looked around disdainfully, covering her nose. âLook at yourself. What sort of place do you live in? A slum? Itâs ugly and filthy, just like a garbage dump! Youâve lived here your whole life. What makes you think you have the right to climb the social ladder to my son?â
After finishing her tirade, Garyâs mother said to Nara, âTake out your phone now and send a message to my son saying youâre breaking up with him! Tell him you donât like him anymore!â
She crouched down, pulled the phone out of Naraâs pocket, and handed it to her. âSend it! Say that you have never liked him! Do you hear me?â
Nara tried hard to shake her head.
She didnât want to end this relationship with a lie.
Seeing this, Garyâs mother pinched her furiously. âI told you to send it! If you donât, I will beat you to death! Anyway, youâve offended the Gill family, so nobody is going to stand up for you!â
Nara covered her face, dodging around as she was pinchedâŠ
Just then, an angry voice came from outside the door. âStop it!!â
