Chapter 902: A Moment of Madness
âThis is meâ ⊠These were the second words spoken by the woman in white after her appearance. From her lowered stance and her gesture as though trying to reach out and touch the female corpse, it wasnât hard to deduce the meaning behind her words â in this meticulously crafted scene, the role played by this corpse was to reenact a part of her past.
But⊠what exactly did this scene signify?
Ling Mo quickly steadied his breathing, forcing himself to calm down. He glanced out of the corner of his eye at the corpses, then at the woman in white, and slowly asked, âYou are the so-called âSister,â the Progenitor Zombie, right?â
The woman in white, however, seemed uninterested in answering his question. She remained in her posture, seemingly muttering to herself, âArenât you curious? You know, thereâs actually a lot of similarity between humans and zombies. Take, for example⊠curiosity. Humans are curious creatures, and so are zombies. In fact, zombies often take it to the next level. Humans have concerns-they weigh risks and consider consequences. But zombies? They donât complicate things like that. Then again, isnât it natural? After all, werenât zombies originally humans? The resemblance is to be expectedâŠâ
ââŠâ Ling Mo remained silent as well, though his emotions were far from as calm as his appearance suggested.
âHey, hey, did you pop out just to chit-chat with me? Or have you been keeping your personal drama to yourself for so long that you canât wait to play narrator? I mean, even though your outfit and voice seem pretty normal⊠this scene is anything but, okay?â
While internally grumbling, Ling Mo subtly glanced toward the side window. With the curtains drawn, he couldnât see outside. Between the woman in white and the window, however, stood a cabinet. âJust a cabinet. As long as I stay here, she wonât leave the room. So, Iâll find an opportunity eventually. But⊠Ye Lian fired her gun earlier, didnât she? Those eyes we saw from Ye Lianâs perspective-were they hers?â
He turned back to observe the female zombie again, but her hair was simply too long, almost entirely covering the side of her face. All Ling Mo could see were a pair of pale hands. Meanwhile, his zombie instincts were warning him not to act recklessly. Never mind how somber and melancholic she appeared now â as a Progenitor Zombie, she could transform into a bloodthirsty monster at a momentâs notice.
Until he found an opening, Ling Mo didnât want to provoke her unnecessarily. If she wanted to talk, so be it. Any extra time he could buy would be to his advantageâŠ
âYouâre curious too, arenât you?â The woman in white spoke to herself again, then suddenly let out a strange, eerie laugh. The sound of it was so unsettling that Ling Moâs hair nearly stood on end. That laugh⊠no normal person could make that kind of sound! His guard went up even higher. But the woman in white quickly stopped laughing and continued speaking.
âI donât know why, but even though Iâve forgotten so many things, I somehow always remember these⊠And to ensure I wouldnât forget, I kept them. At first, it was just because I didnât want them to rot away and turn into bare bones, leaving me all alone. But without realizing it, I gained a stronger⊠ability. I started attracting more of my kind to this place, and gradually, this place became more lively. But no matter what I did, I couldnât make them truly understand me. No matter how much I cultivated them, no matter how I tried to make them evolveâŠâ
At this point, she chuckled twice. âStill, at the very least, I made them more like me⊠just like it used to be. When thereâs someone like you, doing the same things as you, it feels different somehowâŠâ
âSheâs definitely implying somethingâŠâ Ling Mo thought to himself.
But what shocked him most in her monologue was the phrase âalways remember.â The âalwaysâ she mentioned-could it really date back to when she first mutated? Additionally, she had unintentionally revealed information about the situation in this warehouse and the process of her own evolution. First, to preserve skeletons, then to find companions, and finally to make others understand her so she wouldnât be alone anymore⊠At first listen, it might even tug at oneâs heartstrings: unexpectedly, it all sounded rather moving. She was, in the end, just a lonely zombieâŠ
ââŠThis is just about finding accomplices, isnât it?! Doing the same things as before-youâre clearly referring to the activities happening in this warehouse!â Ling Mo thought in disgust, but on the surface, he spoke cautiously, âI donât quite understand. Could you explain a bit more clearly?â
He chose his words carefully for a reason. The thoughts of a Zombie are inherently straightforward and simple, which also meant she could turn on him at any moment⊠After all, her ultimate goal was to devour Ling Mo; chatting was merely a pre-meal entertainment. Therefore, any questions posed too abruptly could end the entertainment prematurely and hasten the mealtime. Letting her ramble on, however, left him utterly confused!
The best strategy, then, was to lure her in⊠showing interest without putting too much pressureâŠ
The woman in white stopped her narration abruptly, falling silent for a moment before she resumed speaking under Ling Moâs anxious gaze: âLetâs start from here thenâŠâ
âAh, that does the trick, a method that applies to all situationsâŠâ At this moment, what Ling Mo thought of was naturally the experience he had summarized while dealing with the three female Zombies at homeâŠ
In the quiet room, the woman in white, a Zombie herself, stood sideways, gently caressing the face of a female corpse and slowly recounted an incident that happened about a year ago. It was this very incident that led to her transformation and the establishment of the Rosen Company standing here today-
âAh! Please, let me go! Iâm not infected, I really am not!â
âIâm not either⊠please, weâre colleagues, arenât we!â
In the dimly lit warehouse, two employees were crying and struggling violently.
Meanwhile, around them, six or seven other employees firmly pinned them to the ground and began tying them up with ropes from the warehouse.
The others remained seated quietly in the corner, silently watching the scene unfoldâŠ
âHelp me, save me!â
As one of the employees was dragged towards the stairs, he desperately reached out to grab the iron railing on the staircase, screaming wildly at two women not far away. The two women, clinging tightly together, averted their gaze from the employee, shaking in terror.
âIâm not infected! I just have a fever, Iâm just sick! Why donât you believe me, please believe me! Iâm not one of those Monsters outside, really not⊠Ah! Donât⊠Ah! Youâll get whatâs coming to you! And you⊠why do you not help when you see death!â ÊđÎá»ĐĂđ
In the midst of his frantic yelling, the employee suddenly let out a scream as two men kicked him hard, then dragged him up againâŠ
One of them suddenly turned his head and shouted at those who averted their eyes: âWhat are you doing? Come up and help!â
âThatâs right! Everyone agreed to this before, so why are you hesitating now? You heard what he said-whether you act or not, it wonât change anything!â another man shouted in frustration.
The warehouse fell silent again. Apart from the cries of the two employees who had been labeled as infected persons, no one made a sound.
The first man to speak kicked the railing with a loud clang, the abrupt noise startling most of the onlookers. The two women clinging to each other flinched and began sobbing uncontrollably.
âIf weâre going to do this, we all have to do it together! Otherwise, when the rescue team arrives, who knows if youâll all pin this on us? Donât give me that âweâll all keep it a secretâ nonsense-I donât believe you! These two are clearly on the verge of turning. Do you want to die? Or is the safety of all of us less important than these two lives?â His voice grew louder with every word, echoing in the oppressive quiet of the warehouse.
âHan Tao, you bastard! Youâll die a horrible death⊠ah!â One of the restrained employees cursed through their tears, but before they could finish, they were met with another violent stomp to the ground.
âIf we donât act now, when they mutate, none of us will leave this place alive!â Han Tao added darkly, his voice ice-cold with resolve.
The men standing idle hesitated, exchanging uneasy glances, but one by one, they gritted their teeth and stood up. At the same time, the employee who had been clutching the iron railing was yanked away, falling hard onto the floor beneath the staircase. Meanwhile, the other tied-up employee, already bound to the staircase railing, broke down in gut-wrenching sobs.
Screaming⊠crying⊠The sounds reverberated in the warehouse like an unbearable weight, collapsing the fragile tension that had bound everyoneâs nerves. It was as if a dam had finally burst-someone let out a shout and charged forward. Chaos erupted as blood spattered from the staircase, painting the surrounding area deep red. The faces of the two sobbing women were soon speckled with crimson drops as their terrified expressions hardened further. The faces of everyone involved mirrored one another in a grotesque harmony: madness underpinned by unrelenting fear.
âI was one of those two women,â the woman in white said, her voice cold and distant. âLooking back now, I canât quite understand the logic behind the choices those humans made. But I still remember how I felt in that moment-I was so scared, uncertain if we were doing the right thing, questioning whether or not that man was actually infected. But that doubt didnât last long. I kept telling myself that he mustâve been infected, that it was the right decision to sacrifice him for the greater good. I think everyone else mustâve thought the same way⊠Just like we all clung to the belief that rescue was coming. Because if humans lose their hope, they wouldnât even know how to face tomorrow. When you think about it, humans really are complicated creaturesâŠâ She paused briefly before continuing.
Ling Mo felt a weight settle over him. For zombies, competition among their own kind was simply another path for evolution. But hearing a zombie so calmly recount a tragic event that had once happened to a group of humans still left him with a faint sense of sorrow and helplessness. However, by this point, Ling Mo had come to understand the true meaning behind the phrase âdoing it together.â And the fact that the woman in white still remembered this event so clearly-remembered it to the extent that it seemed to influence her behavior even now-was probably because this memory had carved itself deeply into her mind.
âBut this⊠this was only the beginning.â
