The tension broke.
Luka started asking about specific training regimens. Natalia answered, her voice steady and confident. Emi offered more cookies. Akari made a joke that actually landed. Skylar even joined the conversation without her usual sarcasm.
The afternoon stretched into evening.
Kimiko asked about classes, about professors, about how we were eating and sleeping and managing stress. Normal mom questions that somehow felt loaded with meaning I couldnât quite parse.
She asked Emi about her healing Aspect with genuine curiosity.
She complimented Celesteâs tea ceremony skills.
She got Skylar talking about music, and I watched my mother navigate the punk girlâs defenses like sheâd written the manual.
She even got Akari to drop the performance and talk about her sister, about family pressure, about expectations.
It was surgical.
Precise.
And by the time the sun started setting, Kimiko knew everything she needed to know without anyone realizing theyâd been interrogated.
"We should get going," she said finally. "Itâs getting late."
"Already?" Luka looked disappointed. "We just got here."
"Itâs been six hours," Natalia said.
"Time flies." Kimiko stood. "Thank you for having us. For letting us see where youâre living, who youâre living with."
She hugged Emi first.
"Take care of him," she whispered, but I heard it anyway.
Emi nodded seriously.
Kimiko moved to Skylar next.
"Keep him honest."
"Thatâs the plan."
To Akari: "Donât let him get too comfortable."
Akari grinned. "Never."
To Celeste: "Youâre exactly what he needs. Even if he doesnât know it yet."
Celesteâs cheeks flushed pink.
And finally, Kimiko turned to Natalia.
They looked at each other.
My mother and my...whatever Natalia was.
"You love him," Kimiko said.
Not a question.
Natalia lifted her chin. "Yes."
"Good." Kimikoâs hand found Nataliaâs shoulder. "Because he needs someone who wonât let him run. Someone whoâll chase him down and drag him back when he tries to sacrifice himself being heroic and stupid."
"I donât run," I protested.
"You took a death beam for your healer," Natalia said without looking at me. "You threw yourself at a fire elemental to protect Celeste. You charged the Arborist with a baseball bat."
"Tactical decisions."
"Suicidal impulses."
"Potato, potato."
Kimiko laughed again.
She crossed to me and pulled me into a hug.
A real one.
Not the polite kind from earlier.
She held me tight enough that my ribs complained.
"Iâm proud of you," she whispered against my shoulder. "Of who youâve become. Of what youâre building here."
My throat closed up.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah." She pulled back, her eyes shining. "Your father would be proud too."
That hit harder than expected.
"Thanks, Mom."
She kissed my forehead.
Then she leaned close, her voice dropping so only I could hear.
Here is the expanded text:
"But if you hurt any of these girls," she continued, her voice dropping to something softer but somehow more dangerous, "if you take advantage of their feelings just because you can, if you become the kind of person who uses people like tools and throws them away the moment they stop being convenientâ"
Her hand tightened incrementally on my shoulder.
The grip wasnât painful, not even close.
But it was firm.
Grounded.
An anchor point that said she was here, she was watching, and she would
always
be watching.
A physical reminder that no matter how far I climbed, no matter how powerful I became, I would never be beyond her reach.
Never beyond her judgment.
"âthen youâll answer to me. And I promise you, Satori, whatever nightmares are waiting for you in those Gates youâve been diving into, whatever monsters youâve faced down there in the dark, they will all seem downright
gentle
compared to what I will do to you."
She smiled then.
That same bright, radiant, utterly maternal smile that had greeted a thousand scraped knees and bad report cards.
Warm as summer sunlight.
And absolutely, bone-deep
terrifying
.
"Understood, sweetie?"
"Crystal clear."
"Good boy."
She released me and turned to Luka.
"Ready, honey?"
"Yeah, yeah." He stood, still chewing a cookie. "Thanks for lunch! Or dinner! Or whatever meal this was!"
Emi beamed. "Come back anytime!"
We walked them out.
The car sat in the driveway, sleek and black and VHC-issued.
Luka climbed in the passenger side while Kimiko lingered by the door.
She looked at the house.
At the peeling paint and crooked shutters.
At the light spilling from the windows.
At the silhouettes of my teammates visible through the glass.
"You found a family," she said.
"I guess I did."
"Donât lose them."
"Working on it."
She got in the car.
They drove away, taillights disappearing down the forest path.
I stood there until I couldnât see them anymore.
"That went better than expected," Natalia said from behind me.
I turned.
She stood on the porch, arms crossed, her expression unreadable.
"She knows," I said.
"Of course she knows. Your motherâs not stupid."
"And she didnâtâ"
"Burn the house down?" Nataliaâs lips twitched. "No. She just threatened you with maternal violence and left. Classic Kimiko."
"Classic," I repeated.
We went back inside.
The common room had emptied.
Emi was cleaning the kitchen.
Skylar had disappeared to her room.
Celeste sat in the armchair by the window, staring out at the darkening forest.
Akari sprawled on the couch, scrolling through her phone.
"Your momâs trending," she announced.
"What?"
"Someone filmed her arriving. Posted it on HunterNet. The comments are going wild." Akari turned the screen. "Theyâre calling her a MILF."
"Iâm going to bed," I said.
"Itâs seven thirty."
"And Iâm exhausted."
I headed upstairs.
Behind me, Nataliaâs voice: "Iâll be up in ten minutes. Donât fall asleep."
"No promises."
I reached my room and opened the door.
Maki sat on my bed in human form, wearing my shirt and nothing else, her two tails swishing behind her.
"Your momâs hot," she said cheerfully.
"Transform."
"Butâ"
"Now."
She pouted but complied.
The black cat settled on my pillow.
I collapsed onto the bed beside her, staring at the ceiling.
Five Rank Ten bonds.
One chaotic familiar.
Two concerned parents who knew more than they were saying.
And a tournament in five weeks where every guild on the island would be gunning for us.
The System chimed.
A notification appeared.
[New Quest Available: The Tournament Arc]
I closed it without reading.
Tomorrow.
Iâd deal with tomorrow tomorrow.
Tonight, I just wanted to sleep.
The catâs purring filled the room.
Warm.
Steady.
Weirdly comforting.
My door opened.
Natalia slipped inside, locking it behind her.
She looked at the cat.
At me.
"Move over."
I moved.
She climbed into bed, curling against my side, her head on my shoulder.
"Your mom likes me," she said.
"She threatened to kill me if I hurt you."
"I know. I heard."
"You werenât supposed to hear that."
