âWait, you have a Luna?â Steve blurted out, his voice echoing through the chamber.
He could hardly believe what heâd just heard. Roganâs pack had a Luna too, but in that pack, the title had become little more than a decoration, a trophy meant to complete the Alphaâs image of strength and power. Roganâs Luna had no real authority, no influence in pack affairs. She was respected, yes, but her word carried no weight.
That was why hearing Jack mention a Luna caught Steve completely off guard.
âYou mean to tell me you have someone?â Steve asked, disbelief etched across his face. âYou have a wife? Since when? Last I remember, you were always hanging around that man Ray and the rest of your friends. You didnât have time for anyone else.â
Jack couldnât help but laugh, a wide grin spreading across his face. âYou may have learned a lot about werewolf ways, brother,â he said, âbut youâve still got a very narrow view of the world. Tell me, when did the rules ever say a Luna had to be an Alphaâs wife?â
Steve froze, realizing he had never questioned that. It was simply tradition, something ingrained in every werewolf since the beginning of their kind.
Jack continued, his voice calm but full of pride. âOur Luna isnât my partner in that sense. She works in our medical center. Sheâs the kind of woman everyone in the pack looks up to, gentle, kind, but strong enough to put any hot-headed wolf in his place. Whenever tensions rise or fights break out, sheâs the one who steps in to calm things down. Nobody wants to upset her. It was only natural for her to become our Luna.â
Steve stared at him in shock. âBut... you do realize what that means, right? You must have heard it before. To unlock the true power of an Alpha, the Luna and Alpha are meant to be one. To share a bond that goes beyond spirit and blood.â
Jackâs grin widened, a hint of amusement dancing behind his eyes. âOh, Iâm well aware,â he said casually. âBut somehow, I donât think my wife would be too happy if I took that kind of advice.â
Steve blinked. The words took a few seconds to register. Then his eyes widened. âWife?!â he shouted. âSo you do have a wife, and the woman whoâs your wife isnât your Luna?â
Jack simply nodded, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Steve rubbed his temples, muttering under his breath. âYouâve really changed... I donât even know what to say anymore.â
Jack leaned back in his chair, chuckling softly. âThis might surprise you even more,â he said, âbut I already have kids.â
Steveâs mouth fell open. âKids?!â
Jack nodded again. âA boy and a girl. Ten and eight. Neither of them have shown any signs of being like us yet, but Iâm keeping an eye on them. You know I was a late bloomer myself.â
For a moment, Steve was speechless. He had imagined Jackâs life moving forward, but not like this. He hadnât even known his brother had a family, let alone one so secretive.
Jack went on, his tone softening. âMy wife isnât a werewolf. Sheâs a member of the Redwing Kingdomâs council. At first, our relationship was purely professional, I wanted to strengthen ties between our pack and the humans who governed this place. But one thing led to another, and, well... here we are.â
Steve still couldnât process it. âYouâve got a wife, two kids, a Luna whoâs not your partner, and somehow... this all works?â
Jack laughed again, shaking his head. âI didnât say it was easy. My familyâs something I keep private, even from most of the pack. They know me as their leader, not as a husband or father. I bring my wife and children here sometimes, but to everyone else, theyâre just human visitors who happen to like being around werewolves.â
He smiled faintly. âI think itâs better that way. It shows the others that humans can live among us peacefully, even if the story behind it isnât entirely true. Sometimes a small lie can do a lot of good.â
Steve couldnât help but admire him for that. Jack wasnât just leading a pack, he was building a bridge between two worlds.
Jackâs voice deepened slightly, his expression becoming more serious. âAnd as for the whole Alpha-Luna bond? Iâve already accepted that I may never unlock whatever âfull powerâ comes from it. But that doesnât matter. My strength is enough. Iâm not chasing power for the sake of it anymore.â
Steve nodded slowly, still trying to digest everything. âYouâve changed,â he said quietly. âYou sound... happy.â
âI am,â Jack replied, smiling warmly. âHappier than Iâve ever been.â
Once their conversation settled, Jack called for the Luna to be brought to his office.
When she entered, Steve immediately understood why she held such respect in the pack. Her presence was calming yet commanding, a soft voice with eyes that seemed to see right through a person. She bowed lightly to Jack and then turned her attention to Steve, recognizing his name instantly.
Jack explained everything. About Steveâs imprisonment, about Roganâs crimes, and about the plan they had in mind, to shift Steveâs allegiance from one pack to another.
It wasnât an easy process. The spiritual bond between an Alpha and his wolves wasnât something that could just be undone. It had to be severed carefully, ritually, and with a Lunaâs guidance.
As the Luna prepared, Steve could feel the energy in the room shift. A faint hum filled the air, soft at first, then growing stronger. The candles flickered, the temperature dropping slightly as faint white light began to circle the floor.
Jack placed a reassuring hand on Steveâs shoulder. âIâll come with you,â he said. âI canât take the entire pack, our people here need to stay safe, but you and I... we can go together. We can put an end to this.â
Steve turned toward him. âJack, if you come with me, youâll be risking everything, your pack, your family, â
Jack cut him off with a firm smile. âDonât worry. I wonât die, Steve. Not now. I have a family to protect, and friends who are counting on me.â
He looked off toward the window, his eyes thoughtful. âI think I finally understand what drove Ray all those years ago. He wasnât just fighting for power or pride. He was fighting for the people he loved.â
