Chapter 1634: What Is She?

When Lupus slipped out of the furnace, brushing soot off his arms and shaking off the lingering heat, the first thing he saw made him pause. Kai and Gary had… escalated things. Quite a lot. In fact, they were putting on such an intense show that Lupus almost doubted whether they were acting anymore.

Gary was holding Kai upside-down by both legs, like a wrestler about to perform a dramatic finishing move. Then, with a loud shout, Gary slammed Kai straight into the floor. Dust puffed up around them as Gary stepped back, lifting his chin proudly and nodding as if he had just won a championship belt.

Apparently, all those days Gary spent watching wrestling weren’t a waste after all. This was his moment. His stage debut. And Kai, for all his usual seriousness, was surprisingly good at playing along. He twisted his body in exaggerated ways, rolling with the motions so he wouldn’t get hurt, allowing Gary to throw him around like he weighed nothing.

The forgers around them were loving the performance. They laughed, shouted, leaned over anvils to get a better view, and cheered each dramatic move the pair made. To them, it was free entertainment in the middle of a tough workday.

Just then, CLANG!

A massive hammer struck the floor, the sound ringing through the forge like thunder. Every head snapped toward the source of the noise, and the room went still.

Lupus stood there, the hammer still vibrating in his grip.

“You two should stop it now,” Lupus said calmly, his voice carrying over the quiet forge. “Before someone actually gets seriously hurt.”

The timing couldn’t have been better. That single impact broke the momentum of the mock battle perfectly. Gary instantly froze mid-pose, and Kai pretended he was just about to launch back in but conveniently stopped, dusting himself off. Everyone understood: the distraction had served its purpose, and Lupus had completed his task.

With the fight neatly wrapped up, the three slipped out of the forge and headed toward the dorms. Their steps were slow and casual, but each of them felt the same tight anticipation. Once they reached their usual rooftop meeting spot, the one safely away from curious ears, they settled in, waiting for Lupus to deliver the news.

They didn’t have to wait long.

“There was someone inside,” Lupus said, his tone heavy. “It was Jack’s wife.”

Gary’s eyes bulged so hard it looked like they might pop out of his skull. “Jack’s wife is in the furnace? What!”

Kai, on the other hand, reacted with nothing more than a quiet exhale. No shock. No confusion. No wide-eyed gasp. He simply nodded, like this was exactly what he had expected all along.

“There’s more, right?” Kai asked.

Lupus nodded. “Right. I could tell as soon as I saw her. She was chained up, kept in there. I don’t know why, but what I do know is… she’s a vampire.”

Gary blinked a few times, like his brain needed to reboot. Of all the explanations he had prepared himself for, that wasn’t one of them. They were in a Werewolf camp, surrounded by Werewolves, rules about Werewolves, and people who could turn into Werewolves. Vampires weren’t even supposed to exist here.

“Jack’s been going to the hospital to get blood,” Kai said. “There’s probably a reason he goes every day. Maybe it has to be fresh. Maybe it’s a specific type. Who knows.”

Gary swallowed heavily, instincts flickering uneasily. Kai’s calmness made it worse.

“And the darkness in the house,” Kai continued, glancing at Gary. “That was the important detail. All the windows were blacked out, no light anywhere. That means she first noticed it at home. Something happened there, and she tried to block out the sunlight.”

Gary nodded slowly as the pieces came together. The smashed plates, the broken cupboards, the scratch marks on the walls. It wasn’t a Werewolf scuffle. It wasn’t some random break-in.

It was Lily.

“And based on what little we did know,” Kai said, “people only ever saw her at night. Even before all this started, the timing matches. I didn’t know how the forge connected either, but it still doesn’t explain why she’s chained up. If she just needed darkness, she could’ve stayed in the house.”

“Right,” Lupus confirmed. “She said it was part of a cure process. I think they’re trying everything they can, intense heat, isolation, whatever they believe might help.”

Silence settled over them as Gary processed everything.

“That must be awful…” Gary murmured. “Being a vampire in a Werewolf camp. But who did this to her? Was it Unzoku? I thought he was… like… king of the Werewolves or something. How did Jack’s wife become a vampire?”

“That,” Kai admitted, “might be something we need to ask Jack directly. And there’s another thing that doesn’t make sense to me.”

Before Kai could continue, footsteps approached the rooftop. They turned to see Galdark climbing up, his expression mixed with worry and stress.

He didn’t even wait to catch his breath. “Well? Did you figure out why Jack’s been acting strange?”

Kai nodded. “We’ll be direct with you. We won’t explain how we know, but we’ve discovered the reason. It’s because of his wife, Lily.”

Galdark’s brows furrowed. “His wife…?”

Kai took a deep breath. “She’s… a vampire.”

A long pause filled the air. The kind where thoughts tangled in the silence. The kind where a person’s mind tries to decide if they heard correctly.

Finally, Galdark opened his mouth.

“She’s a what? …What’s a vampire?”
