Out of all the things for his sister to be calling him about, he never expected it to be about White.
When Gary had saved her from Olivia, she had always been a quiet person, making the odd comment or two. She never spoke too much, never pushed herself into conversations, and at first Gary hadnât completely trusted her. He had been cautious. After everything that had happened, after betrayal and manipulation from so many directions, it had been hard to trust anyone new.
But that slowly began to change.
White never gave him a reason to doubt her. She stayed close to Amy, helped where she could, and over time she became someone Gary didnât need to keep an eye on.
She had become a close friend to Amy.
So much so that the two of them even lived together and went to the same university together. They shared classes, shared space, and from what Amy had told him before, they spent most of their time together.
Since so much time had passed, Gary had just assumed things were stable. Calm. Normal.
He never imagined something like this would happen.
âWait, calm down for a second,â Gary said. âWhat do you mean she disappeared? Was she taken away, or did she say she was going to leave?â
He tried to keep his voice steady. He didnât want Amy panicking more than she already was.
âShe was saying some strange things,â Amy replied. âThings about you⊠and how you needed to go through something. It didnât make any sense.â
Gary frowned slightly.
âThings about me?â
âYes,â Amy continued. âShe kept talking like something was going to happen. Like you were meant to go somewhere, or face something. I told her to rest up, that she was overthinking.â
There was a pause.
âAnd the next day she just wasnât there. She didnât leave a note. She didnât say anything. She just didnât turn up.â
Garyâs mind began piecing together the timeline.
âI thought she was her own person,â Amy said. âSo at first I didnât think too much of it. But after two days of no reply and not coming back, I tried to get in contact. I tried calling. Messaging. I even went around asking people. I couldnât get anything.â
Gary clenched his jaw slightly.
âSo I asked the Howlers for help,â Amy continued. âAnd thatâs when I found out you were missing as well. To be honest, I thought something was up when White was saying those things.â
White disappeared the day after they did.
That wasnât coincidence.
âFrom what I found out,â Amy added, âWhite seemed to vanish the day after you guys went missing. Thatâs why I was wondering if anything happened. Or if she might have returned with you.â
If White had gone missing the day after, then she had practically been missing for two months.
Two months.
Garyâs chest felt heavy.
As far as he knew, White had no family. No one looking after her. No partner. No support system outside of Amy and the Howlers.
Did she just disappear like that?
Or had something taken her?
âIâm sorry, Amy. Sheâs not with me,â Gary replied honestly. âBut Iâll have the Howlers look into finding her. Iâll get everyone to try. I know sheâs important to you.â
He paused before continuing.
âYou rest up. And if thereâs anything you or Mum need, just let me know.â
The call ended there.
Gary lowered the phone slowly.
The others had heard everything. No one said anything immediately. The joy from moments ago had dimmed slightly.
White.
Missing.
It didnât sit right with him.
Thatâs when the three of them heard footsteps from above.
âIt looks like theyâre here,â Kai said. âWhy donât we go and greet them? Weâve all been looking forward to this.â
Gary nodded. The three of them headed upstairs. When they reached the main room, they could see both groups had arrived together, joint as one. They were all there.
Marie. Xin. Innu. Austin. Marcus. Slit. Olivia.
The moment they saw each other, the entire group had large smiles on their faces. Some of them looked like they couldnât believe it.
âThis is real, right⊠itâs really real!â
Marie ran forward, and so did Xin. The two women opened their arms and embraced Kai and Gary tightly.
They held onto them firmly, almost as if they were afraid they might disappear again.
Gary could feel Xinâs grip tighten around him. Marie didnât let go quickly either.
It had been two months.
Two months of not knowing.
âMan, I miss him as well,â Innu muttered, nudging Austin. âBut itâs kinda awkward to get in the middle of all that, right?â
Austin gave a small chuckle.
The others were slightly taken back seeing Lupus there, but at the same time, they half expected it considering what Lupusâs pack had told them.
âSir, youâre alive!â Slit and Luzen said, getting down low, almost kneeling on the ground.
âGet up,â Lupus replied. âYou know Iâve never liked any of that stuff.â
They stood immediately.
âIâm happy to hear youâre alive,â Lupus continued. âI was worried something would have happened to you.â
There was no pride in his voice. Only relief.
âAnd donât worry about joining the Howlers. You did what you had to do at the time.â
The words were simple, but meaningful.
Marcus stepped forward next with a grin on his face.
âWhen they said you were missing, I was shocked,â Marcus said. âBut I knew you were far too strong to just die. Youâre almost impossible to kill.â
The group shared several joyous moments. Laughter. Small comments. Quick exchanges.
They didnât immediately talk about what had happened.
They were just enjoying the fact that everyone was together again.
After everything they had been through separately, after the uncertainty, the battles, and the waiting, just standing in the same room felt like enough.
But they all knew it wouldnât last. Eventually, the explanations had to come.
âSo what happened to you guys?â Xin asked. âWhere have you been this entire time?â
Her eyes were serious now.
âAnd after you tell us, we have a few things to tell you as well⊠about what we just found out.â
