Chapter 104: Chapter 104: The Bloody Incident Caused by a Brat
It was past midnight when Yan Feifan returned to his home in the Zuimo Court District, leaving his sister, who had been waiting up, both worried and distressed.
"Feifan, didnât you finish surgery at eleven?"
"Did you run into an emergency at the hospital?"
Sitting on the living room sofa, Yan Feifan took the glass of water his sister handed him. "You could say it was a special situation."
"I performed a small surgery on Mr. Wang."
"Mr. Wang had surgery? What happened to him?" Yan Ziruo asked with concern.
Yan Feifan took a few sips of water, set the glass down, and briefly explained how Wang Chuan had used himself as a test subject.
"Ah, I canât believe Mr. Wang would put his own body on the line to experiment for Yanyan."
Deeply moved, Yan Ziruo said, "Heâs a good father. So admirable."
"A million times better than a certain someone who doesnât take any responsibility at all."
Yan Feifan said consolingly, "Letâs not dwell on that person. If youâre like me and have no expectations, you canât be disappointed or dissatisfied."
After a pause, he added, "Sis, donât tell Yanyan about this. Mr. Wang specifically stressed that."
Yan Ziruo nodded. "Donât worry, I wonât tell a soul."
"Hey, Feifan, didnât Mr. Wang tell you to keep it a secret from me?"
Yan Feifan chuckled. "He did ask me to keep it from you at first, but I told him I canât keep secrets from you."
"So he just told me to make sure you keep it strictly confidential."
Yan Ziruo was so happy her eyes crinkled into slits.
She threw her arms around Yan Feifanâs shoulders, cheering, "Now thatâs my good little brother!"
"No secrets between us, hehe..."
After hugging her brother and giving him a little shake, Yan Ziruo asked with concern, "Feifan, does it really hurt that much to split a nerve in two?"
Yan Feifan grunted in affirmation. "Nerves are the system that perceives pain. Performing surgery on one naturally means piling pain on top of pain."
"Besides, in order to experience it fully and get good data, Mr. Wang only received a small amount of anesthetic."
"Tonight is probably going to be very hard for him to get through."
At this, Yan Feifan seemed to feel the pain himself, and his heart clenched.
He added, "Compared to skin, muscle, and bone, nerve damage is the slowest to heal."
"It usually takes four to six months."
"And to record the experimental data, heâll have to cut open that muscle to check on the recovery at least once a month..."
Hearing this, Yan Ziruo felt her scalp tingle...
The next morning, Yan Feifan brought some breakfast to the Affiliated Hospital and went straight to the directorâs office in the plastic surgery center.
Wang Chuan had stayed there alone last night.
Knocking before entering, Yan Feifan saw Wang Chuan semi-reclining on a sofa in the reception area, casually browsing a medical journal.
However, his messy hair, pale face, and bloodshot eyes all showed that he had been through an ordeal last night.
Yan Feifan placed the breakfast on the coffee table and asked, "Mr. Wang, should I get you some painkillers?"
Wang Chuan shot him a look. "What painkillers? I made it through the worst of it last night!"
"Persistence is victory!"
He picked up the fish porridge Yan Feifan had bought for him, took a few large gulps, and pointed to the sofa next to him.
"Sit. Iâll continue where we left off last time and teach you about rhinoplasty."
Yan Feifan suggested, "Mr. Wang, you should rest first. We can postpone the lesson."
Wang Chuan glared. "What are you dawdling for? Sit down!"
âPain can make a person irritable,â Yan Feifan knew.
He immediately sat up straight, adopting the posture of an eager and obedient student, lest he provoke the man and end up being the one to suffer for it...
Around nine oâclock, Yan Feifan returned to Qin Yingâs medical research office in the emergency department to receive instruction from Mrs. Qin along with Yu Suye...
At noon, Yan Feifan walked out of the emergency building, ready to get lunch, when he saw his sister approaching with several reusable food containers.
"Feifan, Mr. Wang had surgery and is enduring the pain all by himself."
"As one of the few people who knows, and as his student, you have to show some consideration."
"I ordered a nutritious and delicious meal for a patient. You should take it to him."
Yan Feifan thought his sister had a point, so he took the patientâs meal to Mr. Wangâs office...
Holed up in his office, Wang Chuan opened the containers Yan Feifan brought. He saw that the dishes were exquisite and tempting.
He couldnât help but comment, "This isnât from the cafeteria. It looks like it was ordered from a fancy hotel."
"Feifan, this doesnât seem like your style."
Yan Feifan gave an embarrassed smile and admitted, "My sister asked me to bring it."
A look of understanding dawned on Wang Chuanâs face. He nodded in approval. "Your sister is a good person. A very considerate big sister."
He then asked casually, "Hey, do you and your sister have any special plans tonight?"
"Special plans?"
Yan Feifan shook his head. "Same as always. No special plans."
Wang Chuan asked, a little confused, "Isnât it your sisterâs birthday today?"
"Oh," Yan Feifan said. "It is my sisterâs birthday, but because of some family reasons, my sister and I donât celebrate our birthdays."
Wang Chuan knew a little about the siblingsâ family situation.
He felt a pang of sympathy. After a momentâs hesitation, he said, "Yanyan specifically asked me to find out your sisterâs birthday, and yours too."
"She was planning to go to Zuimo Court this afternoon to give your sister a birthday surprise."
Wang Chuan sighed. "This is the first time in two years that Yanyan has even thought about leaving the villa district and going back to the city."
"And it was her own idea."
Seeing Wang Chuanâs face full of disappointment and sadness, Yan Feifan thought for a moment and said, "My sister and I have never celebrated our birthdays, so itâs become a habit."
"But... if someone made a special effort to celebrate her birthday now, I think sheâd be really happy."
"Then..."
Wang Chuan asked tentatively, "This matter..."
Yan Feifan made a decision. "Donât say anything to Yanyan. Just let her go ahead with her plan..."
Thinking about Yanyanâs visit and his sisterâs birthday, Yan Feifan planned to go straight home after work.
However, things didnât go as planned.
Just before the end of his shift, the emergency department was suddenly flooded with a wave of accident victims and acute patients.
By the time Yan Feifan finished with that wave of patients and hurried back to the Zuimo Court District, it was already past nine at night.
He hadnât gone far into the complex when he saw his sister, Yanyan, and Tian Yu walking the chubby little dog, Helen.
Yan Feifan quickened his pace to meet them.
The little girl, Tian Yu, broke away from the group, first circling him once before eagerly asking, "Mr. Yan, what birthday present did you get for Ruoruo?"
"My sister controls all my incomeâmy salary, bonuses, everything. Where would I get the money to buy a gift!"
Yan Feifan gave a random excuse, noticing that his sister was all smiles, not looking the least bit unhappy or forced.
âSo my guess was right,â he thought.
âShe really is happy that someone came to celebrate her birthday.â
Tian Yu made a small fist and lightly tapped Yan Feifan on the chest, criticizing him in a mock-serious tone, "Mr. Yan, thatâs where youâre wrong. A gift doesnât have to be expensive. Itâs the thought that counts."
"I used the allowance Iâve been saving for a long time to buy Ruoruo a lipstick."
Yan Feifan reached out and nudged Tian Yu aside, then looked at his sister and the half-veiled Yanyan. "Yanyan," he asked, "are you about to head home?"
Yanyan shook her head gently.
Yan Ziruo chuckled. "Yanyan is staying with us tonight. Xiaoyu ate too much, so weâre walking with her to help her digest."
"And Yanyan wanted to revisit her old haunts."
Tian Yu rubbed her little belly and giggled sheepishly, explaining, "Mr. Yan, Mrs. Huaâs cooking was just too good. I accidentally ate a little bit too much."
Yan Feifan reached out and patted her head, saying with a look of mock disgust, "Stop making excuses for being a glutton."
He then looked at his sister and Yanyan. "Iâll walk with you guys for a bit."
"To be honest, Iâve lived here for a while now, but Iâve never really explored the whole place..."
As a high-end garden apartment complex, Zuimo Court had excellent landscaping.
The wide, straight paths were lined with trimmed, low-lying evergreen shrubs.
Every four or five meters, there was a one- or two-meter-tall ornamental bonsai tree, as well as flowering trees that bloomed in different seasons.
The complexâs central garden, in addition to fitness equipment, featured large green spaces, a wisteria-covered pergola, and various tall ornamental trees.
As the group chatted and strolled through the complex, they soon ran into a group of five or six laughing and roughhousing teenagers, around fifteen or sixteen years old.
The teens were clustered around a pretty girl with her hair done in many small braids.
She was leading a six- or seven-year-old boy on rollerblades by the hand.
The group of teens all turned their gazes to the half-veiled Yanyan, staring so intently that she hid behind Yan Ziruo.
Yan Ziruo shot the teenagers a fierce glare.
After they passed the group, Yan Ziruo noticed that Yanyan had become uncomfortable and suggested, "Feifan hasnât had dinner yet. He must be tired and hungry, so letâs head back."
"Okay, okay!"
Tian Yu chimed in, then said with a grin, "Mr. Yan, we saved a lot of food for you."
She patted her little stomach again. "After walking around for a bit, I feel like I have some room again. I can make the great sacrifice of keeping you company and eating a little bit more..."
Her words even made Yanyan crack a small smile...
They turned onto another path to head back, but unexpectedly ran right into the same group of teenagers again.
The little boy on rollerblades broke free from the braided girlâs hand and came stumbling toward Yan Ziruoâs group...
Yan Ziruo took a step forward to intercept him.
But the boy on rollerblades suddenly spun past her with a surprisingly skillful move, bypassing Yan Ziruo and crashing right into Yanyan...
Yanyan instinctively bent over to catch the boy and keep him from falling when she suddenly felt a cool sensation on her face...
"Haha, the veil... Ah... A ghost..."
An inhuman shriek erupted from the little boyâs mouth.
The shriek cut off abruptly as the boyâs eyes rolled back in his head, and he fell backward, stiff as a board, unconscious.
"Brother..."
Seeing this, the girl with the braids shrieked and rushed over, spewing insults, "You ugly freak! If youâre that scary-looking, why are you out here frightening people?"
"Why donât you just die..."
Before the braided girl could finish, a sudden slap sent her sprawling to the ground.
The braided girl was stunned for a moment.
She sat on the ground, clutching her face and staring at the icy-faced woman before her, her eyes turning red. "You actually dared to hit me."
The braided girl pointed at the woman, then turned and yelled at the teens beside her, "What are you all standing there for? Didnât you see me get hit?"
"Get them..."
A chaotic brawl erupted...
The braided girl suddenly noticed the tall, thin man from the other group crouching over her brother, patting him all over.
She scrambled to her feet, rushed forward, and kicked the tall, thin man to the ground, following up with another kick.
Still not satisfied, the braided girl wasnât finished.
She raised her foot and stomped viciously on the right hand the tall, thin man was using to push himself up from the ground...
Before her foot could land, she felt an irresistible force slam into her.
She found herself flying like a butterfly, but she didnât fly far. Her body smashed right into a flowering tree...
After a moment of daze, the braided girl noticed something was wrong with her neck.
She reached up and touched the left side of her neck.
There, she felt the splintered end of a branch sticking out, and it was wet...
