Chapter 225: Chapter 224: Confusion
ă3:10 PM, Emergency Department.ă
In a treatment cubicle, Yu Suye had just finished dressing the wound of a construction worker whose chest had been cut open by a flying saw blade. Just as she sat down to rest for a moment, a shadow fell over her as someone walked in.
She looked up and immediately jumped to her feet in surprise.
"Mom, what are you doing here?"
The woman Yu Suye called Mom was tallâat least five-foot-sevenâwith an elegant figure, a full bust, and a slender waist.
Her hair was swept up in a high bun, and her features bore a strong resemblance to Yu Suyeâsâshe was strikingly beautiful.
If one didnât look too closely at the fine wrinkles around the corners of her eyes and mouth, you could easily mistake her for a young woman in her thirties.
"If I hadnât come, youâd be seeing your father or your grandfather right now."
The beautiful woman replied, sizing up the treatment cubicle. She shook her head and sighed. "Itâs so messy and small. This place is a far cry from Baining Hospital."
"I really donât understand why youâd want to come all the way out here to suffer."
Yu Suye chuckled. "Mom, it might look messy to you, but in my eyes, itâs all perfectly organized."
"I can grab any medicine, instrument, or piece of equipment I need to save a patient at a momentâs notice."
"Mom, wait a second..."
Yu Suye ran out to speak with the deputy director on duty, then led her mother, Su Ru, to the teaching and research office on the second floor.
She poured her mother a glass of water and asked, "Did my brother go back and tell the family everything about whatâs going on with me?"
Su Ru shook her head. "Your brother didnât spill the beans. On the contrary, he was quite loyal and tried to cover for you."
"It was only at the very end, when he saw he couldnât hide it any longer, that he told them everything, down to the last detail."
After a pause, Su Ru asked with a worried expression, "Su Ye, answer me honestly. You and that young doctor, the one surnamed Yan... are you already... living together?"
Yu Suye answered frankly, "Mom, weâre living under the same roof, but weâre not sleeping in the same bed yet."
A flicker of anger rose in her, and she couldnât help but retort, "Are you all that concerned about my chastity and innocence?"
"Mom, you didnât happen to bring a chastity belt with you, did you?"
Su Ruâs expression darkened. "Su Ye, how can you speak to your mother with that kind of attitude?" she chided.
Her tone softened slightly. "If a girl doesnât respect herself, a man wonât truly value you. Heâll just play around with you."
Yu Suye snorted. "Even if I didnât respect myself, that guy Feifan wouldnât give me the chance anytime soon."
Not wanting to discuss this topic with her mother, she asked bluntly, "Mom, just tell me why youâre here."
"Are you here to convince me to break up with Feifan?"
"Or to drag me back to Jingcheng?"
Su Ru was silent for a moment before saying, "According to your father and your grandfather, itâs both."
She let out a soft sigh. "Su Ye, first, tell me, whatâs so great about this young doctor, Feifan, that made you fall for him so quickly?"
"So much so that you couldnât wait to throw yourself at him and move in under his roof?"
"I know for a fact your standards are exceptionally high."
Yu Suye said, a bit shyly, "Mom, because of the long time he spent in a coma, Feifan is very thin. Heâs nothing at all like the tall, strong, tough-guy type I always imagined."
"But somehow, without even realizing it, I found myself falling for him. I just really want to be with him."
"If I had to give a reason, the main one would have to be his talent."
"Mom, you have no idea how incredible he is..."
Watching her daughterâs eyes light up as she talked about Yan Feifan, Su Ruâs heart sank lower and lower.
She knew her own daughter, of course.
Su Ru knew her daughter had fallen for that boy completely. This wasnât, as she had initially suspected, just a way to use him as a shield to resist the familyâs arranged marriage.
âThis is very dangerous.â
If they handled this poorly, her daughter might just leave home and strike out on her own. After all, there was a precedent.
Su Ru listened anxiously as her daughter listed all the boyâs good qualities, then said slowly, "Your Mr. Bin came by the house a few days ago and mentioned him. He praised him to the high heavens, saying his future is limitless."
"Come to think of it, I suppose your Mr. Binâs words had a hidden meaning, didnât they?"
Yu Suye chuckled again. "Mom, Feifan will definitely become a world-renowned doctor."
"Our Yu Familyâs foundation was built by my great-great-grandfather alone, wasnât it?"
Su Ru sighed. "Not every famous doctor can achieve what your great-great-grandfather did."
"Even if Yan Feifan has limitless potential, he still needs time to grow. The benefits from the Lu Family, on the other hand, are right in front of us."
"Your grandfather and your father canât wait that long."
Yu Suyeâs expression hardened, and she said angrily, "Mom, let me be clear. If you approve of my relationship with Feifan, then youâll gain a great doctor with a boundless future."
"If you donât, then youâll lose a daughter..."
There were six patients with hand tendon injuries in total. Every one of them had old, improperly healed wounds. Some had hands curled up like chicken claws, unable to straighten; others had difficulty bending or extending their fingers, or suffered from constant pain.
Chen Yu treated them one by one. It took her anywhere from one to two hours to resolve a single patientâs problems.
From one in the afternoon until seven at night, Yan Feifan simply stood by Mrs. Chenâs side, doing nothing but watching.
He didnât lift a finger to help, not even once. It was all Mrs. Chenâs students who were assisting and bustling about.
Stretching her wrists and arms and twisting her waist, Chen Yu walked out of Treatment Room 3. She stripped off her sterile gown and tossed it into the designated medical waste bin by the door.
Treating these tendon injuries didnât require a standard operating room. Because blood loss was minimal and there was no need for general or spinal anesthesia, the procedures could be performed directly in a sterilized trauma treatment room.
Chen Yu raised her hands, stretching her body as much as she could, and looked at Yan Feifan with a half-smile.
"Youâve watched the treatment for five patientsâ tendon injuries. The next one is your turn."
"So, are you still confident in yourself?"
Yan Feifan was silent, unsure how to answer.
âI still havenât figured out what Iâve truly gained from observing for so long...â
Due to the unique properties of tendons, different types of ruptures and injuries require different suturing methods.
For example, the figure-eight suture is suitable for flat, wide tendons where the two ruptured ends are of equal thickness.
The double-cross suture is used for tendons that wonât be under much tension after being sutured.
The weaving suture is suitable for tendons with ends of different thicknesses and is used for suturing tendons outside the tendon sheath.
Additionally, there are the buttonhole suture, the Kessler suture, the loop suture, the Kleinert suture, and so on.
In treating the old injuries of these patients, Chen Yu had to cut one or even all of the previously sutured tendons and then re-suture them.
In Yan Feifanâs opinion, the suturing methods Chen Yu used to treat the five patientsâ tendons were never the optimal choice.
He analyzed that Mrs. Chen was doing this for two reasons. First, she was deliberately trying to confuse him.
Second, with Mrs. Chenâs level of skill, the specific suturing technique she used had no necessary correlation with the final outcome.
In other words, what Mrs. Chen wanted him to grasp wasnât the suturing techniques, but something else.
But as Yan Feifan replayed Mrs. Chenâs procedures in his mind again and again, he couldnât seem to find anything special about them...
For a moment, Yan Feifan was completely baffled...
