Chapter 229: Chapter 228: Supporting Oneself
"Hello, Auntie!"
Yan Feifan greeted her very politely, then sat down properly on the living room sofa, looking just like a shy guest.
Su Ru sized up Yan Feifan carefully.
Aside from looking a bit thin, his height was decent. Most importantly, he was very handsome, which suited her tastes.
Add to that his incredible medical skills that everyone praised, and the fact that he was an orphan, and Su Ru felt it wouldnât be so bad if her daughter was with him.
But...
Su Ru put on the air of an elder and said, "Xiaoyan, youâre back so late from work. Do you often have to deal with emergencies, like urgent surgeries?"
Yan Feifan said vaguely, "The hospital is located in the city center, so there are a lot of residents nearby."
"Emergency cases and patients injured in sudden accidents are usually sent to our hospital."
Su Ru let out a soft "Oh," then said quietly, "You went to Baining Hospital a few days ago, too."
"The scenery there is picturesque, the work is relaxed, and the benefits are great. Have you thought about developing your career at Baining Hospital?"
Just then, Yu Suye, who was sitting next to Su Ru, answered on Yan Feifanâs behalf, "Mom, Feifan and I are still in the stage of learning and gaining experience."
"The Affiliated Hospital gets all sorts of patients from all over the country every day, which makes it easy for us to get clinical practice."
She then added, as a reminder, "Feifan just got back from a long day, so he must be tired and hungry. And Mom, you must be tired too, after rushing here from Jingcheng."
"Why donât we talk about this tomorrow?"
Su Ru looked at her daughterâs insistent gaze and felt a sense of helplessness.
A faint smile appeared on her face as she looked at Yan Feifan and said, "In that case, Xiaoyan, you should get some rest."
"Weâll talk more tomorrow!"
After saying this, she stood up and, accompanied by Yu Suye, went up the stairs to the attic room.
Yan Feifan let out a huge sigh of relief, his body finally relaxing from its stiff, upright posture...
After washing up, Yan Feifan came out of the bathroom in comfortable pajamas and saw Yu Suye leaning against the wall to the left of the door.
"I made you something to eat."
Yan Feifan grunted in acknowledgment and went to the dining area. He found a bowl of wonton noodle soup with vegetables and a plate of Kung Pao chicken on the table.
Having not eaten much since noon, the aroma of the food made him realize how ravenous he was.
Yan Feifan devoured the large bowl of wonton noodle soup and the entire plate of Kung Pao chicken, finally feeling much more comfortable.
He looked at Yu Suye, who had been sitting quietly beside him, watching him eat, and said slowly, "I was scared."
Yu Suye nodded. "I know. Iâve pushed you to accept so much these past few days, and then my mom suddenly showed up. Itâs perfectly normal for you to be scared."
After a pause, she added slowly, "In the future, Feifan, if you run into a situation like this again, donât turn off your phone, and donât hide."
"Ruoruo was very worried."
"And I was worried, too."
Yan Feifan grunted in agreement. "My sister chewed me out, too. She said if I ever dare to do that again, sheâll break one of my legs."
Yu Suye chuckled softly. "Does Ruoruo hit you often?"
Yan Feifan said, slightly embarrassed, "Not often. Just occasionally."
He quickly added, "It doesnât hurt, either. Itâs just her way of expressing her opinion."
"So, I always let her have her way. I donât hold it against her."
Yu Suye smiled. "I know. You and Ruoruo have a really great relationship."
She added, "My brother and I have a great relationship, too."
After another moment of silence, Yu Suye said slowly, "My family knows weâre together. My mom came here specifically to persuade me to leave you."
"I expect my dad and my grandpa will probably come over, too..."
Noticing the muscles in Yan Feifanâs face begin to tense, Yu Suye quickly said, "Donât worry, Iâll handle all of it."
"You just need to be yourself and confidently admit that youâre my boyfriend in front of them. Thatâs all."
Yan Feifan said "Oh," and stated, "That much, I can do."
He then asked with concern, "Um, besides trying to persuade you, what else will your family do to you?"
Yu Suye shook her head gently. "Aside from trying to guilt me with our family ties, thereâs not much else they can do."
"As for financially..."
"Ever since I started attending the family school, the various cash prizes Iâve won each year have been more than enough to support myself."
"Not to mention, Iâm now drawing a salary from Baining Hospital and receiving family dividends."
Yan Feifan asked curiously, "The money you used to buy the apartment at Shengjing Apartments?"
"It was all from the scholarships and dividends Iâve saved up over the last few years!"
This answer left Yan Feifan quite surprised.
An apartment in Shengjing Apartments, though only forty or fifty square meters, would still cost around three million because of its prime location.
He said, a little sourly, "Your familyâs scholarships and dividends are quite generous."
Yu Suye said casually, "Theyâre alright, I guess."
"If the scholarships were too small, they wouldnât be much of an incentive."
"I ranked first every year, and with prizes from competitions, awards for publishing papers, and so on, my total annual awards probably came to about eight hundred thousand to a million."
Yan Feifan grimaced. "Some of the chief physicians at the Affiliated Hospital donât even make that much in a year."
Yu Suye said, looking a bit troubled, "After I started working, my salary from Baining Hospital became very low, only about twenty or thirty thousand a month."
"If it werenât for the annual family dividend we get after starting our careers, that salary wouldnât even cover my daily expenses."
Yan Feifan asked curiously, "How much are these dividends?"
Yu Suye explained, "Itâs different for everyone each year, depending on their work and contributions, as well as the performance of the family businesses."
"For someone like me, an attending physician working on the front lines, the dividend multiplier is among the highest. Last year, I received over six hundred thousand."
Yan Feifan was truly envious.
âBeing born into the right family is a real skill.â
The standard of living Yu Suye enjoyed was something many people could never achieve even after a lifetime of hard work.
Yan Feifan suddenly thought of something and asked, "Hey, do the girls from the Yu Family who marry out still get to enjoy the family dividend benefits?"
Yu Suye explained, "As long as you still work for a family business, you can. If your children take the surname Yu, they can attend the family school and be entered into the Yu familyâs genealogical records."
"If you donât work for a family business and your children take their fatherâs surname, you only receive a New Yearâs âsympathy paymentâ of a few tens of thousands each year."
Yu Suye asked with a grin, "Are you worried you wonât be able to support me?"
Yan Feifan scoffed. "Did I say I was going to support you? You have hands and feet, you can support yourself."
"Thereâs only one woman Iâm going to support, and thatâs my sister."
Yu Suye giggled. "Iâll support myself, but youâll have to support the children, right?"
Yan Feifanâs face darkened.
"Itâs too early to talk about that. Weâre not even close to getting married yet."
"Iâm tired. Iâm going to bed..."
The next morning, Yan Feifan learned from the hospital that the man with the buzz cut, who had been taken to the Affiliated Hospital by ambulance and undergone emergency treatment, could not be saved and was now brain-dead.
The hospital was planning to negotiate with his family to see if they could get consent for organ donation.
Hearing this, Yan Feifan couldnât help but reflect that the two girlsâ persistence last night had been worthwhile after all.
To avoid running into Yu Suyeâs mother, Yan Feifan ate breakfast out.
After breakfast, he didnât go to the Affiliated Hospital. Instead, he took the subway, heading for Renâai Hospital.
Today, Yan Feifan had two freelance surgeries.
Renâai Hospital in the morning, Huashan Hospital in the afternoon...
