Chapter 443: Chapter 442: Medical Malpractice
At noon the next day, after lunch, Yan Feifan once again came to the hospitalâs Little Red House.
His office on the ninth floor was already undergoing renovations!
As for the renovations, Yan Feifan had taken a completely hands-off approach, leaving it entirely to his sister and Yu Suye to handle.
He just had to wait a month for the office to be ready for use.
Yan Feifan walked into a luxury suite in the Little Red House and saw Zhou Yan, a Chinese-American, dressed in a hospital gown. His head was wrapped in gauze and a mesh retainer, and he was slowly walking around with his wifeâs support.
After more than half a month of recovery, Zhou Yan could get out of bed and do some simple rehabilitation exercises.
When Zhou Yan saw that his visitor was Yan Feifan, a smile immediately spread across his face. He said enthusiastically, "Mr. Yan, we finally meet again."
"Please, have a seat. Quick, sit down."
Yan Feifan sat down on a sofa in the sitting area and said, "Dr. Zhou, Iâm only responsible for the surgical part."
"The patientâs post-operative recovery is handled by the other attending surgeons, the on-duty doctors in the inpatient department, and the nurses. Iâm not involved."
He offered this explanation because he had detected a hint of complaint beneath Zhou Yanâs enthusiastic words.
In fact, according to the Affiliated Hospitalâs regulations, the lead surgeon is fully responsible for the patient until they are discharged.
The problem was that Yan Feifan had patients in the plastic surgery center, neurosurgery, and trauma surgery. On top of that, he had to study and brainstorm ways to optimize the surgical plans for his next patients every day. He simply didnât have that much time to do rounds.
So, Lo Jun, Wang Chuan, Chen Yu, Qiu Ge, and others had proactively taken over the post-operative recovery management for those patients.
With his wifeâs help, Zhou Yan slowly sat down on the sofa across from Yan Feifan and chuckled. "I understand, I understand."
"Iâve only recently learned that you, Mr. Yan, are an omnipotent jack-of-all-trades."
"Brain surgery, neurosurgery, trauma surgery, and plastic surgery..."
Zhou Yanâs face was full of admiration as he said, "Mr. Yan, youâve made me truly realize that geniuses we ordinary people canât comprehend really do exist in this world."
Yan Feifan replied politely, "Thank you for the compliment."
He then asked directly, "Mr. Zhou, why did you ask me to come here today?"
"Is it a health issue?"
Just then, Zhou Yanâs wife brought tea for the two of them.
After leaning forward slightly to express his thanks, Yan Feifan heard Zhou Yan continue, "Itâs not a health issue."
"My current condition is something I never could have dreamed of. I thought the best-case scenario would be ending up in a wheelchair, at the very least."
"Before I came, I had prepared for the worst-case scenarioâbeing shipped home in a box."
"At the time, I was thinking that if I really didnât make it off the operating table, I wouldnât go back. They could just bury me in my ancestral graveyard back home. It would be a way of returning to my roots."
Zhou Yan smiled again and said, "I didnât expect that fate wasnât done with me. My ancestors were watching over me, and I was lucky enough to meet you, Mr. Yan!"
"Dr. Qiu says my recovery is going remarkably well. I should be able to be discharged in another week."
Just as Yan Feifan was privately wondering if a post-operative side effect had turned the man into a chatterbox, Zhou Yan finally got to the point.
"Mr. Yan, first of all, congratulations on establishing a cross-national medical partnership with Mr. Vega."
"To be honest with you, Mr. Yan, my business in the United States is in pharmaceutical and medical device sales. I have some connections with the medical regulatory authorities and in medical circles over there."
Zhou Yan leaned toward Yan Feifan and asked, "I was wondering, Mr. Yan, would you be interested in opening a private specialty hospital in the United States?"
"You wouldnât have to worry about a thing, Mr. Yanânot the funding, medical licenses, hospital construction, approvals, or anything else."
"I can take care of everything."
"And once the specialty hospital is up and running, if you wanted to become a US citizen, Mr. Yan, that would be very simple too."
Without a second thought, Yan Feifan refused directly. "Mr. Zhou, thank you for your confidence in me and for the proposal."
"But Iâm sorry, Iâm not interested in that."
Zhou Yan said with a look of regret, "Thatâs a real shame."
He didnât press the issue and instead asked, "I heard you signed a partnership agreement with Baining Medical Technology, Mr. Yan, authorizing them to develop a surgical robot that can use your puncture injection technique?"
Yan Feifan nodded.
Zhou Yan sighed softly. "In terms of surgical robot R&D, domestic research companies are just getting started, really."
"Internationally, three companiesâfrom Germany, the United States, and Japanâare the best in the field of surgical robots."
"They all have several mature surgical robot models that have been put into clinical use."
"I have business dealings with two of those companies."
"Mr. Yan, have you ever considered switching to a partner with more resources and more advanced technology?"
Yan Feifan refused again. "No. My collaboration with Baining Medical Technology has been pleasant, and the R&D is progressing quite smoothly."
"Domestic surgical robot R&D may be just starting out, but that doesnât mean the technology isnât advanced."
"There are countless examples of domestic companies leapfrogging the competition."
Zhou Yan gave a slight smile and said, "You have a point, Mr. Yan."
"The motherland is growing stronger and stronger these days. We wanderers overseas are also happy and proud..."
A few minutes later, Yan Feifan left the hospital room, feeling a little disappointed.
He had come with a small sense of anticipation.
Yan Feifan had thought that because of the successful surgery and his own rapid recovery, Zhou Yan might make a generous donation to the Extraordinary Fund or to medical research.
He hadnât expected the man to just be thinking about business partnerships.
During their conversation, Yan Feifan had considered whether to bring up an international collaboration for the infusion controller.
At the last moment, he decided against it.
Yan Feifan knew that true success at home would naturally lead to recognition abroad.
If he could build up the domestic market, the international market would naturally follow.
If the domestic market failed, then everything else would be pointless.
âI shouldnât bite off more than I can chew. For now, itâs best to go all-in on establishing the domestic market first...â
Yan Feifan left the Little Red House and went straight to the trauma surgery department.
The first thing he did was check on the guinea pigâs recovery.
The success of this surgery was of great importance, so he couldnât afford to be careless.
The guinea pigâs temperature was a little high, and his penis was swollen like a carrot grown in barren soil.
This was all normal.
Yan Feifan observed it carefully and found no dark patches or spots on the swollen penis that would indicate blood stagnation or foretell tissue necrosis.
Satisfied, he left the guinea pigâs room and went to the trauma surgery departmentâs office area.
Just as he approached the door to the directorâs office, he heard an angry roar from within.
"What do I usually teach you?"
"Are you a complete idiot?"
"You canât even perform such a simple surgery properly? Now the patient needs an amputation. Just you wait for the inquiry and the lawsuit."
Yan Feifan quickly stopped in his tracks, turned around, and went to the first-floor reception and treatment hall to help out.
He asked around and learned that a chef had come in that morning.
The previous Thursday night, the chef had nearly severed the index finger of his left hand. One of Mr. Chenâs students, an attending physician, had treated him.
The chef came to the hospital today, saying his finger had been hurting for the past few days.
An examination revealed that the half-severed index finger on his left hand had turned black and become necrotic, leaving no choice but amputation.
Knowing the reason Mr. Chen was scolding that person, Yan Feifan could only hope it wasnât a case of medical malpractice caused by the doctorâs own negligence.
Otherwise, it was highly likely that Mr. Chen would kick the guy out.
Just then, Yan Feifanâs phone rang.
He took out his phone and saw it was a call from He Junxing.
"Mr. Yan, the twins and their family are expected to arrive at our Affiliated Hospital tomorrow evening..."
