Chapter 1986
In the Dong family courtyard.
Dong Xuebing had been playing with the child for a while.
Summer afternoons were still quite hot, but courtyard houses were much cooler in winter and summer compared to apartment buildings. Plus, the yard had shade from trees, so it wasnât unbearably hot. A large jar under the tree held two watermelons chilling in cold water, and now and then, a breeze would bring a bit of incredible relief.
Nearby, Luan Xiaoping came out after tidying up the house.
âXiaobing, go get some sleep.â
Xie Guobang said, âIn-laws, weâll head out first.â
Luan Xiaoping was surprised, âWhat? Itâs still earlyâstay for dinner!â
Xie Guoliang smiled as he stood up with his wife. âNo, weâll pass. The old man just left; weâll go check in. Lao Sanâs got some work stuff too, right?â
Xie Guojian nodded, âI have a business trip. Itâs an evening flightâI need to go home and pack.â
Luan Xiaoping clicked her tongue. âThe watermelons are already chilled, and no oneâs even touched them. At least take a couple with you.â
Xie Hao didnât hesitate, grabbed one from the jar, and hugged it with a grin.
âHeh heh, then I wonât be polite. Iâm taking one!â
Han Jing smiled, âIn-laws, let the child take his nap. Weâll gather again when thereâs time.â
Luan Xiaoping didnât insist further. She knew they were all busy people. High positions came with high responsibilities, and time was always tightâeven weekends werenât free. Unlike her, now that school was on summer break, she had plenty of free time.
Yang Zhaode took a call at that moment. After speaking briefly, he told Luan Xiaoping, âI should get going too. The carâs waiting outside. Thereâs a meeting in the province this afternoonâI must rush back.â
Luan Xiaoping knew this already. âGot everything with you?â
âAll packed. What about you?â he asked.
âIâll stay a couple more days. Havenât seen my son in so long,â she smiled, âand my chubby grandson too, hehe.â
Dong Xuebing muttered, âWhy is everyone leaving? Iâve only just arrived.â
Han Jing teased, âThatâs what you get for coming late. Alright, go to sleep. Look at those dark circles under your eyes. You didnât eat on the plane, did you?â
âI just slept through the flight,â Dong Xuebing replied.
Han Jing said, âThen let Huilan make something for you.â
Xie Huilan pretended not to hear, happily watching her son from under the shade of the tree.
Dong Xuebing glanced at her. As if I could ever count on your daughter to cook for meâIâd probably starve to death waiting.
Ten minutes later.
Dong Xuebing and the others saw off Old Yang and the Xie family at the end of the alley. Then they returned to the courtyard. Only Dong Xuebing, Luan Xiaoping, and Xie Huilan were left. Noâthe adorable little guy was also stretching in his motherâs arms. So, four people.
âMy sonâs sleepy,â said Xie Huilan.
âThen let him nap with me,â Dong Xuebing offered.
Luan Xiaoping smiled, âAll three of you go lie down. Iâll cook some dough drop soup for Xiaobing, which will be ready in five minutes. Do you want an egg in it?â
âYeahâone. No, two!â Dong Xuebing replied quickly.
âGot it.â She nudged his shoulder. âGo lie down.â
Xie Huilan handed over the baby. âMom, Iâll go. Youâve been busy all day.â
âNo need. Iâll be done in a minute. Go,â said Luan Xiaoping.
Dong Xuebing and Xie Huilan took the child into the north room as his mom went to the kitchen. Dong Xuebing, not even waiting, took off his shoes and clothes, flopped onto the bed, and pulled a light blanket over himself. Bathed in the sunlight shining through the window paper, he stretched luxuriously.
âSo comfy.â
Xie Huilan put the baby on the bed. âYou hold him while I change.â
âSure thing.â Dong Xuebing cradled the sleepy little guy, who could barely open his eyes. Finding him utterly adorable, he kissed his forehead.
Little Dong Chong was annoyed and twisted away, âYah!â
Dong Xuebing laughed, âAlright, alright. Daddy wonât mess with you. Go to sleep, baby.â
But the little guy refused to sleep, even though he was exhausted. He kept reaching toward his mom, who was changing clothes.
Xie Huilan climbed into bed. âHe wants to nurse before sleeping.â
Dong Xuebing chuckled, âEven this tired, and he still insists on milk.â
âWell, heâs my precious son,â she said, smiling as she pulled him in and opened her shirt for him to nurse. âYou think everyoneâs like you?â
Dong Xuebing snorted and leaned closer. âThen I want to be pampered tooâlet me have a sip.â
Xie Huilan glanced at him sideways. âEverythingâs your business, huh? You think you can drink your sister-in-lawâs milk? Bold of you. Oh, by the way, Iâve got the wedding money in my bag. We didnât take much from outsidersâmostly just close family. My aunt and uncle couldnât come, but they sent money anyway. You decide whether to give it to your mom or keep it.â
Dong Xuebing closed his eyes, âUp to you.â
âAlright. Then give it to Mom when she leaves.â
Once the baby finished nursing, his little face was full of satisfaction. As Xie Huilan cuddled him gently, he quickly drifted off to sleep.
The door opened.
Luan Xiaoping walked in with a steaming bowl of soup. âThe baby asleep?â
âJust now,â Xie Huilan whispered.
âTell Xiaobin to eatâsoupâs ready.â She brought it over.
Dong Xuebing wasnât asleep yet. He looked at her and groaned weakly,
âMom, Iâm too tired to move. Feed me.â
Luan Xiaoping rolled her eyes. âFeed you? How old are you now? Already a county party secretary and still acting like a kid. Your wife will laugh at you.â
Dong Xuebing played the fool, âBut Iâm exhausted. Then let Huilan feed me.â
She snorted, âYou think youâre the only busy one? Your wifeâs been getting everything ready and dealing with people since early morning. And she didnât even complain. Youâve barely done anything, and youâre whining already.â
Dong Xuebing sheepishly said, âIâve been working since yesterday, too. I havenât slept or eaten in over 24 hours.â
Luan Xiaoping replied, âBack during that earthquake, you were buried in the hospital rubble for weeks without food, and came out just fine.â
Dong Xuebing: ââŠâ
She shoved the bowl at him. âEat it yourself.â
âItâs fine, Mom,â Xie Huilan said, taking the bowl. âIâll feed him.â
âDonât spoil him, Huilan,â Luan Xiaoping warned. âHeâll only get more entitled.â
Dong Xuebing pretended not to hear and hugged his wifeâs soft hips. âMy wife is the best.â He opened his mouth.
Xie Huilan smiled, cooled a spoonful, and fed him.
Dong Xuebing happily chewed, âMmm, delicious.â
Watching them, Luan Xiaoping just shook her head. âAfter you eat, put the bowl on the table and get some rest. Donât talk too loudâdonât wake the baby.â
âGot it, Mom.â Dong Xuebing took another spoonful.
Thunk. The door quietly closed as Luan Xiaoping leftâprobably for a nap herself.
As soon as she was gone, Xie Huilanâs expression changed. Still smiling, she handed him the bowl and turned over.
âSleep now.â
Dong Xuebing protested, âYou only fed me a few bites!â
âThat was for your momâs sake,â she replied.
Dong Xuebing knew he was no match for his wife. Fine, heâd eat by himself. Sitting up carefully, he wolfed down the soup in a few bites, licking the last drop before tossing the bowl on the table and crawling back into bed to cuddle his wife.
He squeezed her thigh.
Patted her curvy rear.
âYouâve lost weight again,â he said. âEven thinner than after giving birth. Donât you dare be dieting againâvanityâs dangerous.â
The baby was on her far side, so there was no fear of bumping him.
Xie Huilan turned to face him. âI donât need vanityâIâm naturally beautiful.â
Dong Xuebing laughed. âDonât say that when youâre back in Xiaxing City. If a farmerâs cow goes missing, theyâll probably think you blew it away with your bragging.â
âEnough nonsense. Not sleepy?â
âSeeing my wife wakes me right up.â
âMore like that soup woke you.â
âNot really. If I could have another sip of milk, thatâd be perfect.â
âAll you think about is milk? Maybe I should buy you a tin of formulaâIâll mix it for you at night.â
âI donât want formulaâI want yours.â
âWeâll see if youâve got the guts.â
âOh? Sounds like a challenge. Now youâre asking for it. Donât move.â
And with that, Dong Xuebing began flirting seriously with Xie Huilan. Though they had met recently when she had a work trip to Baohong City, it still felt too long apart. Now, finally reunited and with some private time, the couple made the most of it, chatting and cuddling. Emotional bonds need maintenance, or theyâll fade with time.
âStop fooling around.â
âJust one sipâcome on!â
The two teased each other for over twenty minutes until Dong Xuebing, sweating from the effort, finally caught her off guard and managed to sneak a big gulp and swallow it down.
