Chapter 42: Skill and Path
In the morning, Old Man Yao rose from his bed and slowly walked into the courtyard.
The water tank was already filled, the courtyard floor swept clean, but Chen Ji was nowhere to be seen.
Old Man Yao looked up at the crow on the apricot tree, and the crow pointed a wing toward the door.
His gaze passed through the corridor to the clinicâs exterior, where I was sweeping the stone path in front of the clinic with a long bamboo broom.
Yesterday was the Double Ninth Festival, and Anxi Street was littered with dogwood and debris, yet only Taiping Clinicâs entrance was spotless.
He asked curiously: âWhat hour did this kid get up?â
The crow cawed once.
âThird quarter of the Tiger Hour? Up earlier than roosters,â Old Man Yao glanced around: âHe works so neatly, I canât even find a reason to whip him.â
The crow cawed again.
Old Man Yao nodded: âHeâs indeed sensible⊠No need to keep praising him; I know.â
He walked to the door, squinting at me: âYouâre so diligent it makes me nervous. Itâs not your turn to work todayâwhyâd you do everything?â
I leaned on the oversized bamboo broom, smiling: âIdle hands are idle. Itâs my home, after allâcleaning it up feels good.â
Old Man Yao eyed me suspiciously: âYesterday you were all polite with me; today youâre cozying up?â
I replied: âGotta make some changes.â
Old Man Yao was silent for a long time: âWhatâs your plan for She Dakang?â
I swept the ground, answering: âCanât really kill him⊠Master, do you think Senior Brother She is a bad person?â
âHe isnât.â
âRight, you donât think heâs bad either,â I sighed: âIâll keep this in mind, but I donât know if I could actually kill him.â
Old Man Yao said calmly: âYouâre not a good person, nor a bad one. People like you donât last long in the martial world. The Mountain Lord legacy might end with you.â
As he spoke, hoofbeats echoed from the end of Anxi Street.
Old Man Yao and I turned to see a carriage speeding toward us.
The carriage stopped at the clinic. Princess Baili, the Little Monk, and the Heir jumped out, the Heirâs face marked with lipstick prints, reeking of alcohol.
The three lowered their heads and rushed into Taiping Clinic, not forgetting to greet Old Man Yao: âGood morning, Physician Yao!â
âGood morning, Physician Yao!â
Halfway in, Princess Baili turned back, shoving an oilpaper package into my hands: âHere, as promised. Gotta go!â
The three stumbled into the back courtyard. The Heir shouted: âLittle Monk, your turn to step on me to climb⊠Huh, no need!â
He noticed a wooden ladder already set against the wall.
He muttered softly: âThe toll wasnât for nothing. This kidâs decentâtruly one of us rivers-and-lakes folk!â
Princess Baili glanced back at me on the street, then climbed the ladder into the princeâs mansion: âHurry, hurry, Master Wangâs morning class is starting.â
Physician Yao stared as the three climbed into the mansion, then turned to me: âYou set up the ladder?â
I nodded: âI took their money; I provide some convenience.â
Physician Yaoâs face was expressionless: âWith you around, Taiping Clinic is getting less and less peaceful.â
At that moment, drunken curses came from the end of Anxi Street: âRed Cloth Lane is full of ungrateful wolves. When I had money, they called me Lord Dog; broke, they call me Liang Dog. Just three times I didnât pay, and they kicked me out! Now I bring the Heir, and theyâre all bowing and scraping?â
Another voice, sullen, said: âBrother, your name is Liang Gouâer. They didnât call you wrong.â
âThe Heirâs too much. They rode back in a carriage and didnât give us a lift. And no place to stay either.â
Liang Maoâer grumbled: âBrother, canât you just work steadily for the Liu Family? They pay well.â
âNo way⊠I have three no-helps: no help for drunkards, swindlers, or slackers; no help for eunuchs; and no help for those against eunuchs⊠Those old foxes are black-hearted, with even blacker hands. I canât outplay them.â
I turned to see chubby Liang Maoâer carrying Liang Gouâer on his back.
âMaster, do you know Liang Gouâer?â I asked curiously.
âI do,â Old Man Yao sneered: âKnown in the martial world as the Autumn Wind Blade, thatâs Liang Gouâer.â
âAutumn Wind Blade? Because he practices Autumn Wind Saber Technique?â
âNo, because he loves mooching off others like the autumn wind.â
Me: Huh?
âMaster, is Liang Gouâer an Enforcer?â I asked curiously: âWhyâs he attached to the Liu Family?â
âCultivation needs wealth, companions, methods, and land, just like you need ginseng for your practice. Martial artists need herbs to temper their bodies,â Old Man Yao said calmly: âMost cultivation paths are the sameâburning money like water. Without backing, you canât build momentum.â
âLiang Gouâerâs already so skilledâwhy not rob the Liu Family?â I asked.
Old Man Yao scoffed: âThe worldâs resources are held by officials, noble families, Daoists, Buddhists, and a few sects like Luo Tian Sect. No matter how skilled Liang Gouâer is, he canât withstand a charge from three thousand elite cavalry. The Liu Family in Yuzhou supports over forty thousand elite troops, obeying only Grand Secretary Liu. How many heads does Liang Gouâer have to rob them?â
Liang Maoâer approached, carrying Liang Gouâer.
Drunk, Liang Gouâer opened his eyes, pointing at Taiping Clinic: âWeâll stay here! Itâs close to the Heir; heâll take me when he goes out to play!â
Liang Maoâer looked sheepishly at Old Man Yao: âSorry, my brotherâs talking nonsense.â
âIâm not talking nonsense!â Liang Gouâer, disheveled, jumped off Liang Maoâerâs back and swaggered toward the clinic.
Old Man Yao raised a hand: âHold on.â
Liang Gouâer blinked, swaying as he sized up Old Man Yao, then exclaimed: âPhysician Yao⊠an old friend! Even better, weâll stay at Physician Yaoâs!â
Old Man Yao stayed silent.
I tensed, having seen Liang Gouâerâs blade workâhis cut through Lin Chaoqingâs hat was precise, not a fraction off.
I worried such an Enforcer might cause trouble if Master refused him, potentially harming Master.
But before I could figure out what to do, Old Man Yao glanced at me, then said slowly to Liang Gouâer: âStaying at the clinic isnât impossible, but you must teach my apprentice saber skills. Teach well, and Taiping Clinic will not only house you but feed you too.â
I froze.
Was this my stingy Master?
Liang Gouâer teased with a grin: âPhysician Yao, you run a clinic. Whyâs your apprentice learning saber? Business bad lately, planning to make some injuries?â
Old Man Yao said unhurriedly: âJust teach. Donât worry about the rest.â
Liang Gouâer suddenly grew serious: âOld man, Iâm drunk, not stupid. The Liang Familyâs saber path isnât taught to outsiders.â
Physician Yao said calmly: âIâm asking you to teach saber skills, not your familyâs saber path.â
Liang Gouâer thought it over, then laughed heartily: âDeal! Letâs go, Liang Maoâer, weâve got a place to stay! Find some food first! Teaching saber skills? Thereâs no blade in this world Liang Gouâer canât teach!â
