Chapter 385: Evangelion Flashbacks
âReady!â everyone shouted in unison.
âGood. Basic safety protocol shouldâve been drilled into your heads in boot camp, yes?â Frederick asked again.
âYes sir!â
Of course, Rael chimed in as well. How could he tell his teammates that he joined the Blazing Sun Knight Brigade an hour ago?
âExcellent. Iâll go in first. Wait exactly 5 seconds, then all of you come in after me. Understood?â Frederick said sternly. âIt must be 5 seconds. No more, no less.â
Hmm⊠why?
Rael mused.
All of a sudden, he felt a slight connection form inside his mind, and it didnât take a genius to know who this connection belonged to.
Burger?
[Thatâs me,] Burger replied confidently. [I see youâre finally in your main body. But what gives? Why are you still in this place?]
After a few moments and after sorting through Raelâs memories, Burger let out a sigh.
[Another bold idea, huh? Sure,] Burger said, unconvinced. [Also, inspect me.]
Rael tilted his head and did just that.
Name: Burger, Herald of Forgotten Kings
Race: Spirit King
Element: Soulfire
Level: 291 â 3,944
Health Points (HP): [???/???]
Mana Points (MP): [???/???]
Strength: 1
Agility: 1
Constitution: 1
Intelligence: 94,245 â 885,200,521
Wisdom: 1
Willpower: 428,772 â 1,749,211,085
Charisma: 10 â 20
Oh wow⊠your Charisma increased.
[Bastard⊠No. Itâs fine. I just wanted to show you that I have also been training in the spirit realm,] Burger said with a pout. [Now you may share your skills, or I can even assist you in my slime form.]
Assist me? That would be a surprise,
Rael mused.
I thought that aside from being a chatterbox, you wouldnât have much use. Guess my gamble is paying off.
Burger fell silent when all of a sudden, Rael felt someone pinch his cheek.
None of his teammates were responsible, so of course, this was Burgerâs doing.
Do that shit again and Iâm going to exorcise you,
Rael said plainly.
[My, how scary⊠too bad you canât exorcise me since youâll need me as your Draconic teacher. Howâs progress in that regard, by the way? Still not feeling like doing it because you think Solenne will catch you?] Burger asked.
Yet Rael simply ignored him. He wasnât going to risk it.
Therefore, heâd accept Burgerâs help if needed, but for the time being, there were more pressing matters at hand.
Frederick stepped through the portal, and they all began counting. Once the count reached 5, every single remaining soldier of the Starlight Division ran inside the portal.
Raelâs vision shifted in a familiar manner, but just as fast, it returned.
He felt like he would vomit at any moment, but he held it back and glanced at his team.
CoincidentallyâŠ
âBleghhh!â
They were all vomiting.
All except for Frederick, who stood a few meters ahead with his back turned toward them.
He looked prideful, but Rael had a feeling the real reason he made them wait was to avoid showing his own embarrassing moment.
Well⊠respect for the creativity, I guess,
Rael thought and glanced around.
They were in some charred battlefield with thousands of metal gears and bolts scattered throughout the land. He could even see a few pieces of advanced technology, such as a railgun, and even a few rustic car parts.
But it seemed like that was only the start of his fears, as in the distance, he saw a colossal red robotic leg, which belonged to none other than one of those mechas from the movies he used to watch.
Is this some sort of revolution world? Am I going to be fighting mecha pilots? FuckâŠ
It took a few seconds for the soldiers to pull themselves together, and when they did, they glanced toward the captain, who soon began explaining how this world worked.
âAs you might have guessed, this is a slightly technologically advanced world. Itâs nothing too serious, but the creations are a bit troublesome,â Frederick muttered and sat down on a piece of nearby scrap metal.
âFrom the intel weâve been given⊠the humans of this world performed various experiments with technology. Eventually, they figured out how to pilot mechanized machines for warfare. However, some were greedy. So greedy, in fact, that they decided to deepen the connection between man and machine.â
He let out an exhausted sigh. âA few hundred years ago, a human managed to create a special energy vessel. It had a hollow outside, one which was made completely out of a mana crystal, and then on the inside, there was a single artificial soul.â
A shiver ran down Raelâs back as he realized where this was going.
And Frederickâs next words further confirmed this ominous feeling.
âThe mechanized machines shared the same source code, so when the first soul was embedded into a machine, it multiplied endlessly. Eventually, every single machine was infected, and since all of them shared an artificial soul that was a literal blank slate⊠they went on a rampage and killed all the humans in this world.â
Frederick looked off into the distance. âSo our goal in coming here is to find a high-class mechanized machine and implant this.â
He took out a single blue crystal from his inventory and held it for everyone to see.
âDo note that the mechanized machines had built up several resistances to such things. Thatâs why we canât just grab a weak one and implant this mana crystal. We need to find one of the strongest mechanized machines here, and thatâs the only way we can get out of this alive.â
With that, his explanation was over, and as expected, everyoneâs expressions were glum.
But Rael couldnât understand the practical side of this. Why did the Blazing Sun faction need to deal with stuff like this?
I mean⊠if I was the strong leader of a faction, and I had such a parasite in my portal room, then Iâd just cut the portal off,
Rael thought.
Yet he didnât voice it out loud. After all, this was a good opportunity to get some practice in, and if the mechas were considered monsters, then he would get some progress in his Supreme Beastâs Strength stat.
So with that in mind, Rael steeled his gaze and looked straight north.
Tens of kilometers away, there was a single city. Black clouds swirled above it, and a single thin white spire pierced through the darkness.
From the way Frederick kept looking in that direction, Rael knew that was their next stop.
âAlright, men, since this might be the last time we see all 10 of us alive⊠letâs make a promise,â Frederick said with a soft smile. âThe ones who survive⊠deliver the bad news to our loved ones, would you?â
ââŠâ
A moment of silence ensued, but his words completely energized the disheartened Starlight Division members as they all saluted in unison.
âYes sir!â
