Chapter 387: In The City
Getting such pleasant upgrades was like eating pizza for breakfast.
It was something he wanted to have every dayā¦
But more importantly, the damage heād caused to the environment wasnāt something he expected.
Because of that, however, he had to take a few steps back to ensure he didnāt fall into the constantly expanding ravine.
He brushed the dust off his knuckles, then glanced back at his division.
And as expected, he was met with shocked looks.
Frederick stepped forward, his lips trembling.
āY-You⦠are you one of the higher-ups?ā Frederick asked, wary. āI get that the Starlight Division had many deaths⦠but thatās because the missions we go on are dangerous. We would never kill our own.ā
āCalm down. Iām just an expert at fighting with my fists,ā Rael said plainly. āPlus, canāt you do the same? I mean, you are Grade 3, arenāt you?ā
The moment those words left Raelās mouth, he understood one thing.
These guys didnāt have special classes. They were just regular soldiers, so even if their levels were high, they definitely couldnāt deal with those mechas earlier as easily as Rael did.
After all, even in Sketa Online, to kill a monster that was the same level as you, youād need at least three people.
So in the end, this fight was supposed to be difficult, but because of Raelās intervention, heād basically cleared the field.
Frederick sighed. āAster⦠Who are you, really?ā
āHmm⦠Iām the same guy, but if it makes you feel any better, I woke up from a coma not too long ago,ā Rael replied. āThe healer said he found me on a battlefield, but I have no memories of that ever happening. Strange, right?ā
āThat it isā¦ā Frederick mumbled. āSay, you move like a swordsman. Have you ever practiced the sword before?ā
Ah⦠thatās probably because of the bonuses I have to swordsmanship. Canāt really control that.
āI picked it up in the past when I was bored. I didnāt like it that much, so I stopped,ā Rael said, turning to the approaching ravine. āAlso, I think we should get out of here before we fall inside.ā
Frederick nodded, and like that, they continued on toward the city in the distance. Yet midway through, Rael couldnāt help but spot a few lingering gazes from his teammates.
To his surprise, they didnāt contain any negative emotions.
They are⦠relieved?
Rael mused, inwardly chuckling.
I guess not all people are shit. Good to know.
Along the way to the city, they kept chatting about Raelās stunt, and he also got to know more about the team itself.
Eight of these people had known each other for years. They had gone through tens of missions together. But then there was one guy who joined only recently.
He was the youngest person here, and he couldāve fooled Rael. After all, his muscles were even larger than Raelās, and so was his beard.
His name was Mathieu. A light mage, but Rael felt like something was off about him.
Definitely not from the start, but something about the way he was behaving now.
When Rael had caused that giant ravine to form, everyone was shocked. That burst of emotion that reached Rael was no joke. But out of the nine people present, only eight showed an actual reaction.
The last one, Mathieu, didnāt even flinch. He only had a slight smile on his face as he tried his best to fit in with the others.
So unless this guy is a sociopath⦠he definitely has something going for him, that much Iām sure of,
Rael thought.
As he was about to drop that topic, he remembered something.
Burger, can you still mess with minds like that one time?
[Hmm⦠why not. Do you want me to go inside that guyās mind and look around?] Burger asked. [Though, I do have to tell you that Iām not as proficient as you are in mind manipulation.]
That was a strange thing to hear, so Rael offered an alternative.
You mess around with Soul stuff, right? Can you lurk inside his soul for a few hours? Tell me if you spot anything.
Burger whistled. [That I can do. Be right back.]
And just like that, the connection faded.
Now that the obvious problem was settled, Rael decided it was time to pick up his pace.
So he did. He gradually began walking faster, and in turn, the Starlight Division followed, keeping up with him.
After a few short moments, they all burst out into a sprint, but because of thatā¦
āGod damn it⦠can you get rid of that rain cloud?ā Frederick grumbled.
He was the one closest to Rael, and he was now drenched from head to toe.
āHmm⦠No,ā Rael replied plainly. āI like the water, so just go to the side or something.ā
āYou do know Iām your captain, donāt you?ā Frederick said with a raised brow. āWhatever I say goes.ā
Rael rolled his eyes, and instead of complying, he began running faster. It was to the point where the Starlight Division members couldnāt keep up anymore.
All except for Mathieu. He made a slip-up.
When Rael began running faster, Mathieuās speed increased by nearly ten times. But once he realized that the others were slow, he matched their pace instead of Raelās.
Nevertheless, it only took them a couple of minutes to arrive at the outskirts of the city. And to his genuine surprise, it was completely empty.
It was very dystopian. Holograms were flickering, revealing humans advertising their products.
And the most ominous part of it all was the music. It was almost like every single music player in the city was activated, mixing all those strange melodies.
But because of Raelās sound perception, thanks to the Resonant Duelist skill and his proficiency with the Violin Blade, he was able to tell apart a few distinct sounds.
There was a single wail that acted like a nuclear siren, and then there was also distant sobbing. He couldnāt pinpoint it that well, but it seemed like he didnāt need to.
