Chapter 588: Still Alive?
âWhat is there to talk about?â Melissa turned her head slightly. âAre you going to go over the same tune youâve said in the past?â
âIââ
âListen, I donât care,â she interrupted. âSave your apology for the next time you decide to reset the universe on a stupid whim.â
âMelissa,â Rael called out sternly. âIâm not trying to apologize, nor am I trying to get in your good graces. I know I canât, so I wonât.â
Taking a deep breath, he continued:
âThe only thing I want is to hear how youâve been. Is it selfish? Yeah, but I have a bit of time, and since you were talking about a vacation, I bet you do too.â
He turned his gaze to the pond, then walked toward it before sitting down. His expectations werenât high, but even so, after a few seconds, he heard footsteps coming toward him.
Instead of sitting down beside him, Melissa jumped to the other side of the pond and sat down there.
The blood that had been all over her vanished, but her distant expression remained as a painful reminder of how shitty of a person he used to be.
âTell me how this current life of yours is treating you,â Melissa said, amused.
âSeems pretty good so far,â Rael replied dryly. âIâm pretty happy, though with everything thatâs going on right now, I feel like I should just run away with those I care about into some realm no one knows aboutâŠâ
âHow poetic of you,â Melissa remarked. âDo you still carry around those ten wives of yours as some pocket sex toys?â
âTenâŠ?â Rael blinked, flustered. âI have two wives, and most of the time, weâre all doing our own things. Theyâre a bit too weak for me to bring along into dangerous places like these. I donât know how you remember me or how I was like before the shattering, but thatâs not me anymore.â
Before she could reply, Rael decided to give her a little heart-to-heart.
He told her about how he first arrived in this world, the people he met, the dangerous encounters, and even the experience he had in the Memory Record, as well as what followed up until the current moment.
It was odd retelling the same story so frequently. After all, only recently, he had told the same thing to younger Melissa from another universe.
Though⊠he did erase her memories afterward, so it didnât count.
But unlike the reaction the alternate Melissa gave him, this Melissa wasnât as amused.
âHow boringâŠâ she sighed. âIs that really it?â
Rael raised a brow. âEager for more?â
âMore like disappointed,â Melissa replied. âHonestly, one of your stories from before would be enough to at least not make me want to fall asleep.â
âI used to tell you stories?â Rael smiled, lowering his gaze. âHey, this might be personal, but was I a piece of shit till the very moment I died?â
A moment of silence ensued. Melissa began tapping her heel on the surface of the pond while shooting him a blank look.
But her next words did more than break the silence.
âWho says you died?â

Rael froze. âWhat?â
âIf you had died, you wouldâve died in a more grand way,â Melissa added. âYou didnât tell me where you were going, but you did mention the location where you left your guardian. After that, no matter how many times I tried to get in touch, you would not reply to me.â
She narrowed her eyes.
âThat was when, after a few years, I felt your presence in some weak world. I reached out several times, but you never replied. I thought you were mad at me, so I stopped tryingâŠâ
After a brief pause, she turned her head away.
âSo to answer your earlier question⊠you were a piece of shit till the moment you vanished. Not always, but our last meeting was memorable enough to make me dislike you again. Now that weâve gotten that out of the way, I should probably get going.â
His mind still spun from all this new information.
Ever since he first heard about the shattering, he thought that the moment it happened, many beings died and were reincarnated, him included. His sister, Jane, and the others⊠he always thought they simply reincarnated earlier than him and thus gained all this power through hard work.
But if the shattering happened, and the people from before never really reincarnated, then
Was he, as he stood now, just some sort of experiment? Melissa mentioned a tutorial system, so what ifâ
âWracking your brain around the unknown is burdensome,â Melissa interjected. âIf you donât understand something, wait until youâre more powerful. Also, I was kidding when I mentioned the ten wives thingy.â
His brows twitched, and she let out a faint chuckle.
âTruth be told, after your first lover died, you locked your heart away from everyone, including Jane. Though I donât like you, Iâm glad the streak of a couple billion years of loneliness was broken by⊠Zafira and Lilith. I seeâŠâ
A look of understanding appeared on her face, followed by a large smirk.
âIâll be paying a visit to those two. As for you, donât use time reversal. The moment you do, you will lose. If you feel like you canât hack it, then run away. Oh, and whoever is orchestrating all of this⊠just know theyâre not doing it directly.â
Not doing it directly Is she saying that the being is just getting his apostles to do the job?
Rael mused.
If thatâs the case, then I only have to worry about whateverâs in front of me. That makes it a little easier.
âAre you sure youâre going to leave?â Rael turned to her. âI mean⊠I told you about myself, yet you didnât tell me much about how your life has been going.â
âI donât want to tell you anything, because having a conversation with the current you is like talking to a toddler,â Melissa replied. âWhenever you regain the memories of the past, feel free to contact me. Until then, I donât want to hear a peep out of you. Understood?â
The pressure she released was enough to nearly knock him out, but when he raised his head, trying to reason with her, she was already gone without a trace.
The meeting was⊠short. He really wished he couldâve gotten to know her more, and with the amount of mystery she left him, it really seemed like she was his sister.
Then again, if there are billions of years of history between us that just poofed out of my mind and stayed in hers, I can understand why she doesnât even want to humor me.
Rael looked back at the pond, and then at the 44-hour timer.
He sat cross-legged, and since he had a lot on his mind, he decided to meditate.
Not only that, he also tried to nibble at his brain to uncover some of his memories, which, while he wasnât hopeful, was one of the better things he could do with his current free time.
