Rael scooped up some of the grass on the outskirts of the city, and then stuck the seed Gaia had given him straight into the hole, covering it up shortly after.
Then, he just stared at it for a moment, expectantly waiting for it to grow, almost forgetting that stuff like this took time.
But right as he was about to speed up the time of this seed, Gaia placed a hand on his shoulder, then shook her head.
âWeâre immortal beings, so why rush life? Personally⊠I enjoy seeing the growth rather than the end result. What about you?â
Hearing that, Raelâs eyes widened. He never really thought of it that way, but now that he did, he nodded back at her and said:
âThat makes a lot of sense. Yeah⊠Letâs not mess with it. Also, why are so many people staring at us now?â
âBecause commoners and people not from around here arenât allowed to plant their seeds on elven soil,â Gaia replied. âIâm partially elven, so Iâm allowed, but since you were the one who planted it⊠And you clearly lack any elven heritage, thereâs a bit of controversy.â
Racism, eh?
Welp, whatever it was, Rael was glad he planted the seed, and now, he just took Gaiaâs hand and walked through the rest of the city, occasionally stopping for some commodities. Obviously, he tried to make it interesting for Gaia too, but no matter what he did, he couldnât seem to find what she liked.
That was until the two of them visited the orphanage. He didnât really expect her to stop here in particular, but then he remembered how she went out of her way to save those children back then. She definitely had something in the back of her mind she didnât want to share.
So instead of asking her to share, he let go of her hand and nodded toward the orphanage. âDo you want to go inside? Iâm sure, like all orphanages, they accept volunteers.â
Gaia thought over it for a moment, then nodded back at him. Afterwards, the two of them entered the orphanage, and unlike last time, these people didnât seem to discriminate against him for his lack of elven heritage. Instead, they actually welcomed him, even nourishing him with some surprisingly delicious food.
As for Gaia, despite seeming uncomfortable initially, she was happily enjoying her time here. While Rael helped with food preparation and other stuff, she played around with the kids, even going so far as to heal some of their illnesses with her own mana.
He never expected her to do something like that, since oftentimes, she seemed to be impartial. So impartial, she would let the world crumble⊠Not when kids were involved though.
This continued for a bit, until eventually, the bell rang and the kids went back for a nap. Rael and Gaia met up once more, and after saying their goodbyes to the staff, the two of them left the orphanage.
Gaia was much happier now than when she first came to the orphanage. Rael was glad to see that, but he also could barely contain his curiosity.
âWant to talk about it?â
She paused for a moment, then shook her head.
âIâd rather not. I donât have very fond memories of my childhood, since it consisted of nothing but pain and suffering. I turned out alright, but I wish that at that time, I knew how to take better care of people, since if I wasnât so useless, many orphans would have lived.â
Rael stared at her, not sure what to say. âHmm⊠Honestly, I doubt it ever gets better. But if Iâm being brutally honest, I feel like it shouldnât.â
Feeling like he wasnât being exactly very clear, he added:
âBasically, do you feel like if you were a little stronger at that time, you wouldâve been able to save them all?â
Gaia shook her head, her brows scrunching slightly. âIt was manageable. Really manageable. I had neglected training, and if I trained for one month longer, I wouldâve been able to prevent the whole event from happening.â
She opened her mouth, and right as it seemed like she wanted to say more, she stopped, biting her tongue as she shook her head at him.
âThatâs enough. Iâm not sharing any more. Also⊠Your concern about me is unwarranted. You should worry more about yourself, since now you have a lot more on your plate than before.â
Rael rolled his eyes. âI wonât force you to reveal anything, but I do want you to know that you can rely on me, and even use my shoulder whenever you wish. I know Iâm an idiot at times, but even then, I can just listen instead of offering solutions.â
A faint smile appeared on his face. âThatâs much better than me offering to fix all your problems, is it? Imagine Iâm like a priest, and youâre sitting beside me, or whatever you call it⊠Oh, right. A confession booth! Think of it as a confession booth.â
Gaia stared at him as though he was an idiot. âA confession boothâŠ? Do you think weâre in some ancient times? Weâre old enough to talk things out.â
âThen why donât we talk?â Rael proposed, crossing his arms. âIt shouldnât be too hard since weâre both adults, right?â
Gaia rolled her eyes. âNo. I said I wonât talk.â
With that, she let go of his hand and stomped forward, pissed off by his attitude. Rael let out a sigh and followed after her, still trying to convince her otherwise, though obviously, he wasnât very successful.
But even though he wasnât, it was plenty of fun going from one place to another, fighting and exploring. Even the elves noticed it as they began pestering them every now and again.
Eventually, they ended up in the very center of the city, a little tired from all this walking. Obviously, they werenât physically tired. Rather, they were mentally tired.
But even then, now that they had taken a break, Gaia felt a little more at peace. Especially since while they were fighting, they visited every single orphanage in the city, so nowâŠ
