âWhat do you want me to say?â Renoir replied. âI did what I had to do, since I thought that was the best thing to do at the moment. You can blame me, and you can hate me, but nothing will change the fact that I did what was in my best interests.â
Melissa scoffed. âI know. Youâve always done that. Ever since you abandoned me in the hospital, and ever since we supposedly made up. I thought you were different, but youâre still the same selfish bastard who doesnât deserve anything given to him.â
She narrowed her eyes. âDoes your wife know you treat the ones you love this way? Or should I tell her?â
Noticing how things were stepping into âthatâ territory, Rael chimed in:
âDonât bring his wife into this. Itâs between you two.â
Both of them gave Rael a side eye, then ignored him. Especially Renoir, who had an interesting thought.
âHow about I repent? There are plenty of ways I can think of punishing myself, so just choose whichever one youâd like.â
Hm.
A very stupid idea, but Melissa seemed kind of into it.
âI donât want to hear any of them. If youâre really sincere, give up your powers. Scatter all your mana into the cosmos, and leave behind everything that made you powerful. Only then will I accept your apology and think of it as sincere.â
âThatâs bullshit, no?â Nyx chimed in. âWhy would you want him to be powerless and killable? If he does it, heâs going to die in like 50 years. What about his kid? What about his wife? Talk about selfishness, tsk tsk. Youâre both massive idiots.â
Rael nodded. âI agree with Nyx on this one. Weâre not regular humans who live and die with their legacy living on. This isnât right.â
Renoir seemed to think the same. âI could cut off an arm permanently, or gouge out my eyes⊠But no, Iâm not planning to give away all my power.â
Despite there only being four people present, Melissa felt like all three of them were against her. Even Rael, who had called her here, given her the rundown, and even restored her memories. He might not know how selfish Renoir was, but she did.
She knew way too well.
But what could she do? What they were saying wasnât wrong⊠If he were to give up his powers, then his child would grow up without a father. As for her, what happens when her hate fades and she eventually decides she wants to reconcile?
She wouldnât be able to, since there wouldnât be anyone to reconcile with. It was a sad reality to accept, but was there really anything she wanted to do to make him pay? Mess with his memories, maybe?
âAh, I wouldnât mess with his memories either. Heâs a bit emotionally unstable as is because of his wife returning. If there are gaps in his memories, then heâs bound to relapse,â Rael bullshitted with a straight face, and because Melissa wasnât paying attention to him, she wasnât able to tell that he was lying.
âI seeâŠâ Melissa paused for a couple of minutes, pondering over all the possibilities she could tap into.
As for the trio, they grouped up and glanced at one another.
âTsk⊠If you hadnât brought her here, we wouldâve never had to have this conversation,â Renoir said.
âBe glad he brought her here. If you never reconciled with her, youâd be hurt,â Nyx replied.
He shook his head with a frown. âNo, I wouldnât. Iâm someone who doesnât give a shit about ties like that. If you think Iâm like Rael, then Iâm not. He inherited my human traits. Iâm not that kind of person anymore.â
Afterwards, he turned to Rael. âAnd as for you. Fuck you two times for all this bullshit and headaches youâre causing me.â
Rael shrugged. âYou win some, you lose some. On the bright side, youâll have a baby soon. Just make sure you donât check your mail once in the next 9 months, since I might just reveal the babyâs gender and what youâll name it. Heh.â
ââŠâ
Renoir found his act ridiculous, but before he could lash out, Melissa coughed, making all three of them turn around and glance at her.
âIâve decided on the punishment,â she said, glancing over to Renoir.
âUse mana or whatever you want, but make your child a girl. Then, name her after me. I will strictly visit that child and give it attention. Also, you mustnât refuse when I try to train her and give her all sorts of powers she might find of interest. She is going to be better than you, and Iâll make sure of it.â
Thatâs it?
[Hmm⊠I thought she might have a soft spot, but sheâs totally a bro-con, isnât she?] Nyx said inside his mind. [Who knew all of this was a farce just to assert herself into his life. But how will his wife feel about it? Because I sure as shit know sheâs going to snitch about their past to her.]
Rael shrugged.
Whatever it is, I feel like I should stop giving a shit. Being an empath doesnât exactly suit me. They can solve their own problems. If anything, Iâm only doing this so they donât come back for no particular reason. Since theyâll now be preoccupied for a while, I have a few things I want to do.
Notably, find the Yggdrasil Melissa and Altros a new home and help them establish their faction. And afterwards⊠Although there wasnât much he wanted to do, he definitely wanted to pay Vatyra a visit, especially since, by the looks of things, she had been doing nothing but lazing around in her own personal realm.
At the very least, he wanted to take her to dinner tomorrow with Uriel and Solenne. That was the least he owed her for taking care of Uriel for so long.
But until then, he wanted to see how this would play out first.
