CH74 Rune Slots and Slot Capacity
***
In hindsight, Alex cursed himself the entire time the Rune grafting was happening.
What a dumb idea.
"Happy birthday, Alex," he muttered bitterly in his head. "Hope you enjoy your gift of searing agony."
The process dragged on for a brutal twenty minutes before it finally ended.
The Rune Tattoo now rested neatly on the right side of his torso, just above the ribs. Alex chanted the finishing bind spell, connecting the newly grafted slot to his energy channels.
The Rune shimmered faintly in golden lightâits activation complete.
Alex didnât even bother to check for efficiency or resonance. He simply dragged his exhausted body to bed and collapsed into sleep.
Even as he drifted off, he was still cussing himself for picking today, of all days, to gift himself a new Rune.
Some birthday.
He only woke up around noon.
His body had recovered nicelyâboth from the pain of the graft and the exhaustion of working nonstop to prepare the Rune in time.
âAt least it works.â
That was Alexâs first coherent thought upon waking. He felt completely refreshed. Rested. Back at full strength.
Normally, with how drained heâd been, he wouldâve needed a full dayâs sleep to bounce back. Now, with the Everspring Rune bound to him, he only needed a few hoursâthree to four at mostâto return to peak condition.
He stood up and walked to the mirror in his room. His reflection stared backâsilver-grey hair tousled, lean and muscular frame unmarred except for the fresh Rune on his side.
Despite being a research mage, Alexâs body was far from frail. Years of combat training and Bloodline conditioning had carved him into a durable, battle-ready form.
He glanced at the newly grafted Rune.
It resembled a small, traditional print tattooâpalm-sized, cleanly marked.
He hadnât bothered to include any camouflage components in its design. It wasnât about vanity. He wasnât trying to show off, nor was he particularly fond of tattoos. His reason was purely practical.
From his research into Rune Tattoos, Alex discovered that everyone had a limited number of viable Rune spots on their body. He called these Innate Rune Slotsâa term borrowed from Runesmithing and weapon-forging.
These slots werenât something you could train or cultivate. Like magical talent, they were just... luck of the draw.
On average, people born with affinity for Rune Tattoos had three such slots.
But Alex had his own standard. To even be considered viable for Rune-based combat rolesâor what he called a "Rune Soldier"âa person needed five slots. That was the bare minimum required to carry the basic attribute Runes; Strength, Agility, Vitality, Endurance and Perception.
The most Rune Slots Alex had ever seen on one person was eleven.
Unfortunately, that person just so happened to be a personal guard to one of the mages under Grand Mage Rodric Eberâwho, of course, belonged to the Wastelander familyâs proxy faction within the Enclave.
As tempting as it was to recruit him, Alex wasnât about to risk pulling a potential mole into his camp. Especially not one that deep into enemy hands.
It wasnât like he was short on canvases anyway.
Zora had a whopping nine Rune Slots scattered across her body.
Unfortunately, most of them were in... sensitive areas.
Only four of her slots were located in places that could be accessed without things getting awkward. Worse still, the presence of her Nirvana Markings made things even more complicated.
Alex wasnât entirely sure how Runes would interact with those strange markingsâand after what happened with the mite, he wasnât about to risk a second incident.
Alex himself had an above-average number of Rune Slots. Seven.
A bit underwhelming, considering he was the Father of Rune-Tech and all.
Still, what he lacked in quantity, he more than made up for in capacity.
The capacity of a Rune Slot determined how large or complex of a Rune it could hold.
Even when compressed into a Greater Rune, each Rune varied drastically in bulk. That difference came from how many components and safeguards the Rune required to function safely in the body.
Using his own calculations as a baseline:
A standard Strength Rune needed a capacity of 3.
A Vitality Rune, on the other hand, required around 5.
Why? Because Strength was simple. Just push the body harderâamplify muscle output, speed, force.
But Vitality? That Rune had to interface with the bodyâs internal systems: circulatory flow, organ resilience, cell regeneration... It needed safeguards. Lots of them. And all of that made the Rune bulky, even in its compressed Greater Rune form.
Most people had Rune Slots with a capacity of 6.
That was enough to hold any of the basic Attribute Runes. But for something like the Everspring Rune?
Not a chance.
That one required a whopping 8.
Luckily, Alexâs slots werenât just stronger. They were evolving.
He had discovered that his slots had capacities ranging from 9 to 12, depending on locationâand they were growing.
Yes, growing.
This wasnât normal. For most people, capacityâlike the number of Rune Slotsâwas fixed from birth.
Alex had a few theories:
It could be a side effect of his deepening bond with Greater Runes. Or perhaps his Rune-based True Name was evolving and rewriting the rules for his body.
Or maybe it was both.
Whatever the cause, it opened up new possibilities.
Eventually, Alex would be able to use composite Runesâthat is, add secondary Runes into the same slot as long as there was free capacity.
And that was why he didnât include a camouflage component in the Everspring Rune.
That simple concealment glyph took up 1 unit of capacity.
One whole unitâwasted.
Alex wasnât about to sacrifice future Rune integration just to hide a tattoo he didnât even care about.
Zora might be more concerned with aesthetics. But Alex?
He didnât give a damn about marks on his skin.
These thoughts ran through his mind for a while before he shook his head and let them go.
âThe graft looks clean. No irregularities. Everything went according to plan.â
âNow, I just need to test it. Push the limits. Acclimate.â
His eyes lit up as he recalled the perfect method.
âThat should stress me enough to confirm the Regen and Staying Power boosts.â
Without hesitation, Alex walked into the adjoining combat training room, where a battered training dummy waited in the centre.
