Before Chiang Xiao took the call, Chu Liang was telling them about Huo Xiugu.

“It’s from your grandfather. It seems urgent.”

“Chen Yin got hit by a car?”

After listening to the call, Chiang Xiao turned and saw her. She quickly said, “Grandpa doesn’t know the details. He said it was Grandpa Meng who called to tell him. I’ll call the Meng family now to find out more.”

Old Meng was waiting by the phone. As soon as it rang, he reached for it eagerly, but someone else’s hand moved even faster—a lightning-quick grab to answer the phone before him.

Old Meng stared at his son in disbelief.

“Hello?”

“Alliance Officer Meng?”

When Meng Chaojun heard Chiang Xiao address him like that, his heart sank. He said seriously, “I’m not an alliance officer anymore.”

“Mr. Meng.” Chiang Xiao immediately corrected herself, not in the mood for niceties. “Is Grandpa Meng there? Please have him take the call.”

Meng Chaojun’s face darkened. He pressed his lips tightly and handed the receiver to Old Meng.

Old Meng: “…”

This call was meant for him anyway. What was the point of snatching the phone like that?

Nonetheless, he quickly pushed Meng Chaojun aside.

“Little, are you not at home?”

“No. Grandpa Meng, how did you know I’m in M City?”

“I called your teacher. Your teacher said you’ve recently taken leave and returned. Is everything okay at home?”

“Nothing’s wrong.” Chiang Xiao didn’t want to bring up the issue with Chiang Qingzhu—there was no need. “What happened with Chen Yin? Is he still in the hospital? Is his injury serious?”

Wang Yi was standing right next to her, gripping her arm tightly in nervousness. She didn’t have the mind to chat more with Old Meng.

“Yes, he got hit by a car. It seems he was hit in the chest and then fell, hitting his head. He’s already undergone surgery but hasn’t regained consciousness yet. The doctor told his mother not to worry too much—there’s likely no danger to his life. But they’ll still need to observe him after he wakes up to check for concussion symptoms or anything else.”
