Chapter 591: First the Sight, Then the Strike ( 591 )
Liana smiled slyly, her eyes glinting with mischief as she glanced over her shoulder at the chaos behind them.
Gloria chuckled softly beside her. âAra~ princess~ thatâs what you get if you didnât name your own Pekko~â she said, watching Felicia bounce wildly on the uncooperative bird.
Felicia gritted her teeth, her hair whipping in all directions. âYouâ! This is just⊠temporary!â
Liana gave a light hum of amusement. âA Pekko without a name is the same as a Pekko without a master. And in Armand, all of young masterâs wife candidates are expected to have one of their own.â
She looked back again with a smug grin. âLooks like youâve already lost to your own little sister⊠Princess MiMi.â
Feliciaâs eyes twitched. âTchâ!â
Her Pekko, still unnamed and still questioning its entire purpose in life, swerved sharply as if protesting the insult.
âCuquawked!!â
âStop flapping and run straight!â
Gloria tilted her head, amusement dancing in her gaze. âAra~ If this keeps up, she might need a leash instead of reins~â
âLeash for who?â Liana asked, glancing slyly at Gloria without missing a beat.
Gloria covered her mouth with a soft chuckle. âAra~ for some stubborn little catgirl~â
âWha!?â Felicia shouted, nearly falling off her Pekko. Her face flared with indignation as she leaned forward, trying to close the distance.
âYou twoâ!â
âHmm?â Liana turned her head slightly, expression unreadable. âYouâre not denying it.â
âIâ! Thatâs notâ!!â
âCuquawked!!â her Pekko added, flapping its wings as if enjoying the show.
âYou shut up too!!â Felicia yelled at her bird.
Gloria giggled again, her voice honey-smooth. âAra~ so lively. I canât wait to see what happens when she actually meets him again~â
Liana simply smiled, eyes forward. âMm. If she can catch up.â
âSecond wife?â Liana asked, raising a brow at Gloria.
Gloria smiled, her tone playful and warm. âYes, first wife~?â
Liana smirked. âWhere to first?â
âAra~ I believe King Lionessâthis catgirlâs fatherârequested our help with a scouting task at Marrenthold,â Gloria said, eyes glancing toward Felicia with a teasing flicker.
âMmm⊠a task to annihilate halfling spies?â Liana mused aloud, tilting her head. âHow hard can it be? Halflings are easy to spot. Theyâre not good at magic disguise anyway.â
âYes~â Gloria chimed as she reached into her inner pouch and pulled out a sleek pair of enchanted glasses. âWith these, we can easily detect mana signatures. Friend or foeâthese will tell us everything~â
Liana looked ahead with narrowed eyes. âGood. Then letâs finish this task fast⊠so we can reach our young master sooner.â
Felicia, still catching up from behind, muttered under her breath.
âTch⊠first wife⊠second wife⊠Iâll decide where I stand myself.â
Gloria giggled without turning around. âAra~ Someoneâs getting feisty~â
âAll right, Miss Stray Cat~â Liana said, glancing back toward Felicia with a smirk. âWeâre going first. See you at Marrenthold.â
âWâWait!â Felicia shouted, her voice cracking slightly. âIâm the princess of this kingdom! Itâs not like you both know where it is!â
âHmm?â Liana tilted her head innocently. âOf course we donât.â
Felicia blinked in surprise.
âEven with the map your father provided,â Liana continued nonchalantly, âsince itâs our first time inside the Beastkin Kingdom, we might get lost and not know which road leads where.â
Felicia crossed her arms smugly. âThen you two should follow me.â
Gloria just smiled, silent as always.
âWellâŠâ Liana drew out her words, then reached into her pouch and pulled out a strange, rune-marked device. âIf we didnât have thisâwe might.â
Felicia narrowed her eyes. âWhat⊠is that?â
âSomething special,â Liana said, eyes gleaming. âIt scans maps and shows directions in real time. Helps us avoid wrong turns.â
Feliciaâs confident smile cracked slightly.
âBut donât worry,â Liana added, tucking the device away. âEven without it, Pekkos are too fast and too agile. No monster would even dream of hunting something that wonât let itself be caught. And princesses riding on one? Perfect bait.â
Felicia flinched. âWhaâ!â
âWell then⊠see ya, Princess~â Liana sang, tapping Pikkoâs reins.
âCuquawked!!â Pikko dashed forward, Peanut right behind.
Felicia stood frozen, her jaw slightly open.
Her unnamed Pekko looked at her.
âCuquawked?â
ââŠDonât just look at meâfollow them!!â
As Pikko and Peanut moved quickly along the rugged trail, their pace steady and swift, Liana casually looked back over her shoulder.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
âHm~ look at that,â she muttered. âSeems like that stray cat actually learned how to handle her Pekko.â
Behind them, Feliciaâs horse sped up, moving with smoother, more controlled rhythm. Her posture had become more relaxedâless stiff, more balanced. Though her face was still serious, a little pride sparkled in her eyes as she started to catch up.
âSheâs catching up,â Liana said, her voice calm and unreadable.
Gloria gave a small smile. âAra~ she learns quickly when she really wants it~â
âShe just doesnât want to lose,â Liana replied with a smirk. âThat prideâs too heavy to let her fall behind.â
âBut still,â Gloria said, brushing wind-blown strands from her face, âitâs a good sign. We donât have time to babysit her.â
Felicia, just a short distance behind, shouted ahead, âDonât think Iâm impressed by your head start!â
Liana chuckled softly. âOh, princess, we donât need to impress you. We just need to arrive first.â
She glanced down at the device in her hand. The smooth surface pulsed faintly, and a red ripple flickered across the display.
Her expression shifted.
She gently pulled Pikkoâs reins. âSlow down⊠Stop here, Pikko.â
The Pekko obeyed instantly, coming to a halt with minimal noise.
Gloria, already sensing the change in atmosphere, slowed Peanut beside her without question. She didnât speak, simply waiting.
Felicia, charging forward and about to shout something smug, narrowed her eyes instead when she saw Liana raise a handâpalm out, fingers slightly curled.
A silent signal.
Felicia instinctively pulled her reins, her unnamed Pekko skidding slightly before stopping beside them.
âWhat is it?â she whispered, glancing between the two.
Gloriaâs eyes were calm, focused.
Liana didnât look up. Her voice was quiet. âJust ahead. Somethingâs moving unnaturally. Possibly hiding.â
Feliciaâs ears twitched, her instincts sharpening.
Gloria slowly reached into her pouch and pulled out her glasses.
