Chapter 636: Loyalty and Authority ( 636 )
Theyâll accuse usâŠ
Of intentionally dragging the refugees in.
Claim weâre doing it for cheap labor, or just to grow our tax revenue.
As if weâre trying to weaken their population while fattening our coffers.
Itâs nonsenseâbut politics is rarely about truth.
And then thereâs the spy problemâŠ
No doubt some lords will try to slip in agents among the refugees. Maybe to stir unrest. Maybe to gather intel.
But Father already accounted for that.
All restricted areasâmilitary outposts, magic labs, relay tower stationsâtheyâre only accessible to original Armand citizens and verified personnel.
And as for sabotage?
We donât rely on letters anymore. No slow messengers. No pigeons or runners that can be intercepted.
We have mana talkies. Real-time communication across the entire region. The moment somethingâs wrong, we know.
Our people donât even need to screamâthey just press and whisper.
Thatâs the strength of the Armand Region.
But still⊠even if I donât need to worry about any of that right nowâŠ
Itâs not just because Father is the best ruler.
Itâs because of the people standing with him.
Alf⊠the man who sees everything, hears everything⊠loyal to Father like a shadow.
Heâs not just a butler. Heâs the blade that hides behind every polite smile. The backbone of all logistics, intelligence, and internal security.
And his wife⊠Erinnette⊠the silent storm. Head of all maids, feared even by generals. Calm, graceful⊠but if she moves, heads roll. Not even nobles dare to raise their voices to her.
Then thereâs General Hesbeirn. That giant beast of a man. The strongest berserker in the regionâcan wield anything as a weapon, even a damn tower shield like itâs paper. And he can use magic too? Thatâs just cheating.
All of them⊠they serve Father. No hesitation. No betrayal. Not for gold, not for glory. Only for Father.
Damn⊠maybe I should start gathering people like that tooâŠ
But then again⊠Iâm not planning to take over Fatherâs title. Iâm not aiming to be Count.
StillâŠ
How am I going to stop this war?
Even if diplomacy fails⊠Even if Edmund already unleashed his unknown forces⊠Even if the continent burnsâŠ
I want to protect whatâs left.
This world gave me a second lifeâŠ
And even if I keep pretending to be lazy and uselessâŠ
Iâm not going to sit back and watch it fall apart.
âYoung master?â Liana asked.
âHmm?â Javier looked up after the deep thought.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Gloria asked.
âHmm? Nothing.â Javier shrugged casually.
âBut you were in deep thought,â Liana narrowed her eyes, looking straight at Javier.
âItâs nothing⊠really.â
Liana smiled. Then pinched Javierâs waist hard.
âOW! Ow owâLiana! What was that for?!â
âYou were looking at that beastkin ladyâs cleavage over there, right?â Liana accused, still smiling dangerously.
âWhaâ?! Iâm not!â
âMmhmm. We saw it. Your eyes were following her when she bent over before,â Gloria added calmly, smiling in that serene, elegant way that made it even scarier.
âI swear I wasnâtâ!!â
Felicia sighed, her tone as quiet and strict as ever.
ââŠAnd you said Ferine would be the lastâŠâ
Javier looked at them, eyes shifting nervously.
âErr⊠did I say that?â
âOf course!!!â all three girls shouted at him in perfect harmony.
âChill, girls! Jeez⊠Iâm just joking,â Javier raised his hands defensively.
Liana stood up, her smile still graceful, yet her hands moved quicklyâlocking his neck in a firm headlock from behind.
âYoung master~â she whispered sweetly into his ear, the softness of her tone sending more fear than comfort.
Javierâs hands flailed.
He slapped the table hard. âSurrender! Surrender!! I wonât! I wonât add more! I swear!!â
Gloria giggled behind her hand.
Felicia sipped her tea with a quiet smirk.
âGood~â Liana cooed, still locking his neck tightly. âYou better listen to me, young masterâŠâ
Her voice remained soft. Serene.
But the aura behind it?
Terrifying.
âDonât go adding more girls to your harem, young master,â Liana said, her voice calm but unwavering. âI donât know how many times I need to remind you.â
She gently released her lock on his neck but still loomed beside him, her arms crossed.
âI donât even think you could fairly give us time once you marry all of us.â She looked him dead in the eyes. âAnd seriously⊠you still havenât reached adult age yet. What can you even do if you keep adding more girls into your harem?â
Javier gulped.
âErr⊠errrâŠâ He glanced around, eyes flicking to Gloria and Felicia, then at Buddy and the pekkos pretending to be busy munching at the nearby fruit stall.
No answer came out.
Liana leaned closer.
âSee? You couldnât even answer a simple question like that.â Her voice was gentle.
âSo better think twice before adding more. You keep adding girl after girl, but donât even know if the others are serious about you.â
She narrowed her eyes.
âAnd worse⊠you havenât asked yourself if youâre serious about them.â
Javier stared at the table, scratching his cheek awkwardly.
ââŠThatâs⊠fairâŠâ
Gloria sipped her tea, smiling softly. âAra~ Thatâs why I leave the scolding to Liana. She always knows how to handle our young master~â
Felicia crossed her arms, her tone quiet but clear. âI agree with Liana. Donât treat love like collecting itemsâŠâ
Javier sank into his seat, defeated.
ââŠMan, I didnât think having girls in love with me would be this scary.â
Liana pulled her chair closer.
âYou thought it would be all kissing and cuddling, hmm?â
Javier nodded slowly.
ââŠYes.â
âWrong.â Liana flicked his forehead.
âOuch! I get it⊠jeez⊠that hurt!â Javier rubbed his forehead, pouting slightly.
Liana didnât flinch. Her calm gaze stayed locked on him.
âHurt? Hurt? You? Young master?â Her tone was sweet.
âErr⊠I mean⊠not that muchâŠâ Javier looked away quickly.
âPlease stop adding more girls during this time,â Liana said softly, but with finality.
âI know⊠I willâŠâ Javier muttered.
âGood.â Liana nodded once. âNow, Iâm sure Lord Garius is waiting for you at the Beastkin Royal Palace.â
Javier blinked and looked up.
From the shadow of a rooftop beam, the faint outline of a masked figure appearedâbarely visible unless someone knew where to look. The leader of the Armand Shadow Unit was there. Watching. Waiting.
As soon as Javierâs gaze met him, the shadow figure placed a closed fist over his chest and bowed slightlyâwordlessly confirming the message.
Javier stood and brushed off his coat.
âWell, looks like my breakâs over.â
Felicia glanced at him, her voice quiet. âBe careful.â
Gloria rose gracefully, smoothing her skirt. âAra~ Shall we escort you to the palace, young master?â
âMm. Letâs go.â Javier turned toward Buddy, his Pekko, who was still chewing aggressively on someoneâs stolen fruit.
He patted Buddyâs neck. âTime to move, boy. Duty calls.â
Cuquawked!!
As they mounted their pekkos, the shadow figure silently vanished from the rooftop.
