Chapter 653: Obedience and Mischief ( 653 )
Before Liana could retort, both girls froze.
From around the corner, soft footsteps echoedâelegant and measured.
They both immediately turned.
In perfect synchronization, Liana and Gloria straightened their backs, placed their right hand over their chest, and bowed politely.
âMy lady.â
Walking past with her usual grace and subtle authority, Lady Francesca gave them a knowing smile.
She stopped beside them, eyes flicking between the two with amused curiosity.
âOh my~ Are there hot sales in this hallway today?â she asked casually, voice dripping with sarcasm.
âWhatâs with the serious tension? Did someone drop a diamond? Or is my son being fought over again?â
Liana and Gloria both kept their posture perfect.
âNothing, my lady,â they answered in unison.
Francescaâs eyes glinted, and she leaned in slightlyâstill smiling.
âMy~ Is that true? âŠHoney bun~?â
Javier, who had been trying to tiptoe away like a guilty thief, jolted at the sound of her voice. He turned slowly, sweat already beading on his forehead.
âAhaha⊠IâI have my mission later⊠gotta go prepare! See ya!â
And just like that, he dashed away down the hall as Liana sighed and Gloria giggled behind him.
Francesca chuckled softly, folding her arms with a proud expression.
As Javier vanished around the corner, Francesca turned her attention back to the two girls still standing respectfully in front of her.
âNow then⊠Liana. Gloria.â
âYes, my lady?â they replied in unison.
Francescaâs voice softenedâstill playful, but lined with something more maternal.
âYou both wonât be coming with my honey bun for his next mission.â
Both girls blinked.
ââŠMission?â Liana asked carefully.
Francesca nodded. âAh~ My husbandâLord Gariusâtold me to make sure you two donât follow him.â
Lianaâs eyes twitched.
Gloria quietly adjusted her glasses but said nothing.
Inside Lianaâs mindâŠ
âIs young master going on a long mission againâŠ?â
âLeaving us behind⊠just like last timeâŠ?â
Her heart sank a little.
He had promised.
That if he ever went for that missionâthe one to reclaim the Dwarven territoryâtheyâd be by his side.
He promised.
Francescaâs gentle voice broke the silence.
ââŠLiana?â
Liana blinked and straightened. âYes, my lady?â
Francescaâs tone became more perceptiveâless teasing now.
âYouâre worried he wonât be back for a long time⊠arenât you?â
Lianaâs lips pressed together for a moment. Then she shook her head.
ââŠNo, my lady.â
Francesca gave her a soft smile.
âMy~ You say that⊠but your face says otherwise.â
She reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair from Lianaâs cheek.
âDonât worry. Honey bunâs not going off to war. Just a clean-up mission. Heâll be back before dinner.â
She winked.
âYou know how fast Buddy is.â
Liana looked down briefly, then gave a small, quiet nod.
ââŠYes, my lady.â
Francesca turned, her voice breezy as ever.
âAnd when heâs back, make sure to greet him properly. Both of you.â
Gloria smiled faintly behind her glasses.
âOf course, my lady.â
Francesca took a few graceful steps forward, her long dress swaying lightly with each motion.
Thenâshe paused.
Without turning fully, she glanced back over her shoulder, voice soft but unmistakably clear.
ââŠBy the way, Liana. Gloria.â
Both girls straightened instinctively.
âYes, my lady?â they answered in harmony.
Francescaâs lips curled into a gentle smileâthe kind that could either melt hearts⊠or make someone panic.
âI expect more grandchildren once you two are properly married to my honey bun,â she said sweetly.
âOnce he becomes an adult, of course.â
Liana choked on her breath.
Gloriaâs glasses slid slightly down her nose.
âMyâmy ladyâŠ!â Lianaâs voice trembled.
Gloriaâs composed mask cracked slightly. âAra~ T-Thatâs rather⊠direct.â
Francesca giggled behind her fingers.
âHmm~ You two are already kissing him daily, snuggling in bed, and fighting over lips in the hallway⊠so donât act shy now.â
She turned back forward, hands behind her back.
She turned back forward, hands behind her back, voice still lilting with amusement.
âWell⊠still a few years before weâre going to discuss that, right?â
Liana and Gloria both exhaled a breath of relief.
Francesca stopped again.
Her smile faded.
When she looked back this time, her eyes were sharp, commandingâthe true first wife of the Armand household.
âOne more thing..â
âDonât any of you two dare to follow Javier on his mission after this.â
The air turned heavy. Even the hallway seemed to still.
âThis isnât a warning,â she continued coldly.
âItâs a command.â
Liana straightened instantly, bowing deeply.
âUnderstood, my lady.â
Gloria lowered her head as well, voice respectful.
âOf course, my lady.â
Francesca gave one final nod, the coldness in her gaze lingering a moment longer⊠then softened slightly.
âGood.â
She walked away without another word, her presence lingering behind like a shadowed wind.
Once Francescaâs footsteps faded and she turned the next hallway corner, her presence finally out of sightâŠ
The air shifted.
Liana exhaled softly and turned to Gloria, her eyes now serious and focused.
ââŠWe should find young master first.â
Gloria adjusted her glasses, the lenses catching a faint glint of light.
âYes. He didnât tell us what his mission is yet.â
The two shared a lookâno words needed beyond that.
Their movements were already synchronized as they stepped quietly toward the corridor Javier had disappeared into.
They would follow his ordersâŠ
They would obey FrancescaâŠ
But firstâthey had to know.
They reached Javierâs roomâbut the door was open, and the room was empty.
Liana frowned. âHeâs not hereâŠâ
Gloria adjusted her glasses, scanning the room quickly.
ââŠThen heâs already outside.â
Without another word, the two turned and rushed down the hallway, skirts fluttering as they headed straight toward the Pekko pen.
The moment they arrivedâ
âThere he is!â Gloria called.
Javier was already seated on Buddy, gently adjusting the saddle straps, humming casually to himself.
âYoung master!!â Liana shouted.
Javier blinked and looked over his shoulder. âHmm?â
âHow dare you leave before saying anything to us!â Liana snapped, stomping forward.
âHuh?â Javier tilted his head. âI wasnât leaving yet. I was just playing with Buddy firstâŠâ
Gloria folded her arms, clearly unconvinced. âYou didnât plan to sneak out on us again?â
Javier gave a half-smile and held up a long wooden stick with a fat slab of meat tied to the end like bait.
âFor real. Lookâsee this?â
He dangled the meat in front of Buddyâs beak, swaying it teasingly.
âYou know⊠I was just gonna do a quick runââ
âCUQUAWK!!â
Before he could finish, Buddy let out a loud squawk and took off like a missile, chasing the dangling meat with terrifying speed.
âEeeeeekkk!!! Buddy! Wait!! I didnât finish telling themâ!!â
Buddy dashed across the training field, dragging Javier along as he held desperately to the bait stickâhis legs bouncing in the saddle like a ragdoll.
Liana and Gloria stood in silence, wind brushing their hair as the dirt cloud kicked up behind him.
Gloria sighed.
ââŠHeâs hopeless.â
Liana crossed her arms, cheeks puffed slightly.
ââŠAgreeâŠâ
