Whether it was intentional or not, a mistake is still a mistake.
They couldnāt have the fried chicken, so back home, Mom made her a bowl of noodle soup, and the mother and daughter made do with that.
But in the afternoon, Liang Hongmei sneaked out while Lin Wan wasnāt paying attention and went to buy fried chicken for her.
When Lin Wan saw the fried chicken in her momās hands, she was so touched that her eyes almost turned red; her mom always took such good care of her.
When Dad returned home in the evening, he found the mother and daughter eating fried chicken and chatting happily.
"Hey, why didnāt you wait for me today? You two are really something, eating the good stuff behind my back," he said.
Liang Hongmei shot him a glance and said, "Weāre indeed eating the good stuff, and we didnāt save any for you. What are you going to do about it?"
"Wouldnāt dare to do anything; Iāll just gnaw on the leftover bones, alright?" Lin Guozhi laughed as he sat next to Liang Hongmei. Looking at the dishes on the table, he noticed there was wine and frowned. "Xiao Wan canāt drink; did you let the child drink?"
"No, Momās drinking it herself; I didnāt drink," Lin Wan laughed and, while speaking, picked up a chicken leg with her chopsticks for Lin Guozhi. "Dad, I specially saved it for you."
"Hmm, daughters are the best." Lin Guozhi had already eaten in the army, but seeing the chicken leg before him, he took a bite with appetite. "Not bad; I havenāt found this kind of food in Z City."
"Yes, itās really delicious. That place is very popular; every time I go, thereās a line," Lin Wan didnāt mention meeting Du Guangjun today to her dad, so as not to trouble him.
Dad ate the chicken head and took a sip of the wine next to Mom, quite satisfied with the taste.
"Since you like it, Iāll try to make it tomorrow if I have time, see if I can replicate the taste."
"Hmm, itās okay to learn when thereās nothing to do. Maybe if it turns out good, you can sell it in your shop," Lin Guozhi always had a business sense.
He was even better at business than her mom.
Lin Wan chatted with her parents for a bit before heading back to her room.
Mom said not to go back just yet. Going back would mean having to heat the kang, so she suggested Lin Wan sleep in her brotherās room, where it would be easier to warm up.
Lin Wan glanced at her dadās back and shook her head with a smile. "I wouldnāt want to intrude on Mom and Dadās private time."
"What a sensible daughter, really such a sweet little coat,"
"Arenāt you embarrassed, behaving this way in front of your daughter?"
"Sheās my daughter, why canāt I say it?"
"Shoo, shoo, shoo."
"Dad, Iām going now. I wonāt disturb you and Mom."
"Take it slow; Iāll walk you out," Liang Hongmei said worriedly, grabbing a flashlight and following her daughter, who was walking quickly.
"Mom, Iām fine," Lin Wan said, shaking her head helplessly at her momās meticulous care.
"Itās dark; you have to be careful, just in case."
In the end, Liang Hongmei went to her daughterās yard and insisted on lighting the kang for her before going back.
Without a TV at home, Lin Wan couldnāt sleep, so she picked up a storybook and read for a while under the electric light.
Just as she was about to fall asleep, there was suddenly a knock at the door. Lin Wan, feeling groggy, didnāt get up until she heard Shen Rongās voice and quickly got up.
Upon opening the door, she saw Shen Rong holding a child, flustered. "Saozi, can I sleep over with you tonight?"
"Whatās going on?" Lin Wan asked, puzzled. Seeing the child in Shen Rongās arms, she quickly let her in.
"Quick, put the child under the covers."
Shen Rong had left in such a hurry that she was just wrapped in a thick cotton coat.
"What happened? Why did you come out at this hour dressed like this with a child?" Lin Wan closed the door and quickly pulled Shen Rong into the bedding.
"Donāt laugh at me, Saozi. Since my divorce, Li Chang has been pestering me, especially after knowing I live here. Heās been coming around every few days."
"What? He still dares to pester you?" Lin Wan had only heard from Han Yi that Li Chang had injured an arm and spent about ten days in a detention center. She thought after the divorce, he wouldnāt dare do anything."
"At first, he said he wanted to see his daughter. I thought since heās still the childās father, I had no reason to refuse. But then he started asking for more, eventually refusing to leave my house, saying he wanted to remarry me. I refused. After I drove him away that time, I havenāt let him see the child again. I always keep the door tightly locked. But today, somehow, he climbed over the wall. Luckily, I had locked the door inside, so he didnāt get in, but he did pound on my door and threatened me to open it, saying if I didnāt, he wouldnāt let me have peace in the future. It scared me out of my wits, and Ranran cried for quite a while out of fright."
