The woman lived in the same alley as Granny Zhang, just three houses apart, and her husbandâs last name was Gou.
There were three sons in the family. The eldest and the second son were already married. The family was under a lot of housing pressure and had been eyeing the Zhang Familyâs house, not just for a day or two.
They had been hoping to take it step by step, but now the youngest son was also in a relationship, and because there was no house, the wedding date couldnât be set.
When she heard Granny Zhang was going to the Capital with Xinyan, she got anxious.
Now she only thought about getting the youngest son to move into the Zhang family courtyard first. If they wanted him to move out later, it wouldnât be so easy.
Second, she wanted to use public opinion to pressure Xinyan. She bet Xinyan was proud and would, for the sake of face, promise in front of everyone that she wouldnât covet the Zhang familyâs house. As long as she said that, the house would be secured by the Gou Family.
Granny Zhang was a lonely widow. By then, no one would be around, and with their family occupying the house, nobody else could compete with them.
Unfortunately, Xinyan and Granny Zhang werenât going to fall for her tricks.
Both of them ignored the woman. After greeting others, they prepared to head home.
The woman was still unwilling to give up and said, "Hey, donât leave, we havenât made things clear yet!"
Granny Zhang was not to be messed with: "What does my familyâs business have to do with you? Do I need to explain it to you?"
"You really have too much idle concern, thinking youâre something. Ask anyone present, who doesnât know your intentions, you really donât deserve any face."
After speaking, she dragged Xinyan along and said to Han Jingchen, who followed behind, "Jingchen, sorry to let you see this joke. Come, letâs go home."
Han Jingchen nodded slightly at Granny Zhang but glared coldly at the woman from the Gou Family, scaring her into stepping back several steps, thinking: This manâs gaze is really terrifying.
Just like Xinyanâs thoughts, if this woman dared to stand up again and cause trouble, ruining his young ladyâs reputation, he wouldnât mind stepping in to teach her a lesson.
After warning the woman, Han Jingchen then turned and caught up with the grandmother and granddaughter talking up ahead.
Xinyan gave Granny Zhang a thumbs up: "Granny Zhang, youâre amazing, look at how you left that woman speechless."
Granny Zhang laughed and looked at Xinyan: "Everyone knows her intentions, not just me. She still wants to play tricks, without even seeing if she has the capability?"
Xinyan took Granny Zhangâs arm, gently comforting her: "Donât get angry over people and things that arenât worth it. Iâm back, you should be happy."
Granny Zhang smiled at Xinyan: "Yanyan is right, itâs not worth arguing with people like that."
After returning to the courtyard, Granny Zhang smiled and said: "You love eating yellow millet the most. Today I made braised yellow millet with pumpkin for you, with added red dates. You will definitely like it."
Xinyan couldnât help but drool when she heard this: "Granny Zhang, you still know me best."
Granny Zhang knew she loved this dish: "I also made stir-fried potato shreds with sauerkraut for you and specially added some extra chili peppers."
Xinyan was even more delighted: "I must eat more then, Iâve been craving this so much."
As they served the food, Granny Zhang remembered what she originally went out to do but was delayed by that woman from the Gou family.
Xinyan saw Granny Zhang sigh: "Whatâs wrong?"
Granny Zhang then said: "The grapes from the village up front are ripe. I was going to buy some, but I ran into that gossiping woman from the Gou family as soon as I went out."
Xinyan set the bowls: "Letâs go together after the meal, just like taking a walk to help digest."
