After so many years of not seeing each other, the two old men had endless things to talk about.
However, Mr. Wei also knew the purpose of his old friendâs visit, and soon they got to the main topic: "Yiwen, stay here tonight, and tomorrow Iâll personally accompany you on this journey."
Mr. Gu was very excited about the serious matter: "Boyang, Iâve wholeheartedly accepted your kindness, but I wonât stay here. Iâm too eager to wait any longer. If it werenât for wanting to see you, I wouldâve gone directly to search for them."
Mr. Wei could understand his feelings: "Alright, then Iâll have Wei Zi take you there."
Though they hadnât seen each other for over twenty years, the two had grown up together and were intimately familiar with each otherâs temperament and character.
They were only days apart in age, and had always called each other by their names since childhood. Wei Zi was the nickname of Wei Fengyuan, and the elders had always called him that.
Mr. Gu looked at Wei Fengyuan: "Wei Zi, Iâm afraid Iâll have to trouble you this time."
Wei Fengyuan quickly waved his hand: "Uncle Gu, your words are too kind. If I hadnât been on business trips recently, I wouldâve personally gone over long ago.
When I found out about this a few days ago, I planned to request leave to visit, but my father said youâd be coming over these days, and asked me to finish my work tasks first, so I could accompany you with peace of mind."
Mr. Gu naturally understood his old friendâs intentions: "Your father is thoughtful, and youâre not getting any younger, so you canât be impulsive."
Wei Fengyuan nodded: "Indeed, Iâve requested leave in advance this time, waiting for you."
From Chongqing to that place would take more than ten hours by car, and Wei Fengyuanâs wife was a bit worried: "No matter how anxious you are, you need to pay attention to safety. You cannot drive at night."
Xinyan understood their concern: "Auntie, Iâm fairly good at driving, and will take turns with Uncle Wei. Rest assured, we will prioritize safety."
Chen Shifang knew her words were somewhat inappropriate at this time but she knew her husband too well. If it werenât for his father stopping him and asking him to handle work first, waiting for Uncle Gu to arrive and go together, he would have disregarded everything to search for them long ago.
Now she fears he will drive through the night without regard for anything, just to see them earlier. But the mountain roads are treacherous here, and she was truly worried, thus she spoke those words, fortunately, Miss Xinyan is an understanding person.
Thus, they didnât even have the chance to eat at the Wei Family. They packed some food and set off immediately.
They also agreed to stop at the next county to find an inn and stay the night, then continue the journey early the next morning.
The closer they got to the place, the more nervous Mr. Gu became. He didnât know what had happened to his son, or why he was in that remote place.
After nightfall, they arrived at the county town they had to pass through.
Xinyan said to Wei Fengyuan, who was driving: "Uncle Wei, letâs find a place to stay first and weâll go out for dinner later."
Wei Fengyuan had been to this county town before, so they quickly reached the county inn: "Comrade, please give us two rooms."
The staff took a glance at them, and after inspecting their work permits and introduction letters, handed out two keys: "Rooms 203 and 204 upstairs."
Mr. Gu had no appetite: "Wei Zi, take Yanyan to dinner. I donât have much of an appetite, so I wonât join you."
Xinyan held Mr. Guâs arm: "Grandpa, how did you promise Grandma before you left? You agreed to listen to me in everything. If you donât eat well, how can your body withstand it? We canât let the family worry, right?
Besides, youâve confirmed the photo, and itâs definitely Second Uncle. Heâs been staying there all these years, surely something has happened. If you are not healthy, how can we bring Second Uncle back to the Capital?"
Mr. Gu nodded after hearing Xinyanâs words: "Yes, youâre right. Letâs go, Grandpa will go out to dinner with you."
Seeing that Grandpa paid attention to her words, Xinyan finally breathed a sigh of relief.
There was a place to eat below the county inn, but none of them were in the mood to comment on the dishes, mechanically filling their stomach before returning to the inn early to wash up and rest.
The next day, before dawn, all three were up.
When they went down for breakfast, no other guests were there yet. After eating, Xinyan packed some veggie buns for the road, thinking they could fill their stomachs if hungry.
Xinyan was driving today. At first, Wei Fengyuan was worried, afraid that Xinyan wouldnât be used to the road conditions, but he was surprised that the little girl drove as well as he did, and so he felt reassured.
At noon, they didnât park to find a place to eat, but ate the packed veggie buns.
The closer they got to the place, the heavier their mood became; the location was truly too remote.
Due to poor road conditions and taking several wrong turns, they went back and forth, wasting a lot of time.
Finally, before the sunset fully descended, they found the village.
