Ning paused for a moment, looking at the Imp with a somewhat hesitant stance.
"300 Million?" he asked, as if wanting to make sure he heard it correct the first time.
Forgath smiled. "Yes, 300 Million Jorans. All yours. Just join our group."
Ning hesitated still. "I..."
"Think about it. Itâs 300 Million Jorans. And youâll live in the aftermath of the upcoming change. Itâs a good offer."
Ning took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright, Iâll take the offer."
Forgath smiled. "Good, good."
His wings lowered, happy there wasnât a need to fight. "Stop, Frostveil."
The woman behind him had been ready to shoot at Ning when the order came. She stopped a second later, lowering her arm and stepping back.
Forgath then reached down into his coat and pulled out the chequebook. Quickly, he wrote something onto it and tore off a piece before handing it over to Ning.
"Here you go, your 300 Million Jorans."
Ning took the cheque, staring at the amount written on it. Three hundred million Jorans was really quite a lot. He could also feel a strange influence on his person, similar to hypnosis, but not quite exactly. It was a sort of charm that affected only those that were filled with greed. Ning had so little greed that the power couldnât even take effect.
Not that it could work in the first place even if it did work.
"Okay, Iâve received the money, which means I will join your group," Ning said, pocketing the cheque. "Now, what about some more for trying to kill me? I hope you remember that you tried to poison me and have me shot."
Forgath paused for a second, wondering what was wrong. How come his power hadnât made Ning into his slave for the time being? He found it hard to believe that he could remain unaffected.
His expression didnât change. "I gave you 300 Million Jorans. My assassination attempts should be water under the bridge at this point."
"Sure," Ning said. "That doesnât mean I donât want my revenge. You did anger me quite a lot."
Forgath took a step back, fully understanding now that something was wrong. He wasnât so stupid as to not see the signs right away of his powers failing to work on Ning.
Number 7 had a similar power to his, which was why she was chosen. Although their powers werenât inherently the same, he could see himself failing just like she had.
Forgath came to the conclusion that Ning couldnât be dealt with using his powers. Instead, he needed to convince this daywalker with facts and logic.
"If you kill me, they wonât allow you to join the group," Forgath said.
"Maybe," Ning said. "But I did kill Number 7 and you still gave me the chance. So there is a chance they will give me the chance as well."
"Not me. I am far more important than that bitch Five. Our group needs me for whatâs coming."
"Iâm sure I can handle it," Ning said simply, taking a step forward.
"You donât understand whatâs coming," the Imp spat. "The world is going to undergo a massive change soon, with the majority dying a death they would never be able to foresee. It will be an apocalypse."
"And youâre certain you can survive?" Ning asked.
"We have a way."
Ning took a moment to consider. Not to join, but to wonder if Tritus was behind this apocalypse.
"Tell me more about this apocalypse," Ning said, growing even more curious. Keira had mentioned something about the apocalypse as well, so he was very much looking forward to it all.
"I donât know the details," Forgath said. "Iâm only Number 5. Number 1 alone knows what it really is. If you want to know, youâll have to join our group and ask him."
"I have no plans on joining your pitiful group," Ning said. "What then? What happens now?"
Forgathâs wings flexed wide again. "Then Iâm going to do my best to kill you here and now."
Ning watched Forgath flex his sharp claws, as if a bird talon, ready to tear him limb from limb.
Ning laughed a little. "You already failed twice," he said. "What makes you think you can do it now?"
Forgath smiled, showing pointed teeth. "Failed? I had barely tried back then. I had you poisoned in the hotel because I didnât think much of you. But once you showed that you could handle being poisoned, I tried to see how strong you actually were. At the hero trial, I was merely testing you. There was no real intention to kill you. If I had wanted to kill you, you wouldnât have been free for the past 5 days."
"But now, I understand that you wonât be joining us, so I have no reason to stay my hand. Youâre strong, but not even you can go every single day with people trying to kill you day and night. Every single day, every hour, someone will come for you. You wonât sleep. You wonât rest. Eventually, youâll break. And all I need to do to make that happen is make one call."
Ning waited for a moment and smiled. He pulled out a phone from his pocket and spoke into it. "Did you hear all that?"
Forgath froze. He stared at the phone in Ningâs hand and then at Ning.
Ning placed the phone on loudspeaker.
"Got it loud and clear. Weâve recorded Forgathâs speech about killing you, and having already tried it before. That should be enough, sir Vâ Blackfang."
"Thank you, Mira." Ning ended the call. He looked at the stunned face of Forgath. "And thank you for the confession. I donât think I couldâve gotten you to talk about everything had it not been for your enthusiasm in monologuing. You have no idea how freeing this is, to know that I wonât be chastised for doing what Iâve done to you. And what I will do to you next."
