Song Xiaodong gave a wry smile and said, “Okay, I admit when I’m with you, I do have thoughts of taking advantage and seeing you get angry. But since you’re so serious, I won’t treat you like that anymore. Still, we are friends, and if you ever need anything, just ask. I’ll help you.”

Qiao Yutong looked at Song Xiaodong, snorted lightly, and said, “Don’t say it so nicely. I won’t fall for it again. We can be friends, but if you think you can treat me like before, that’s not going to happen.”

“Qiao Yutong, I want to make it clear. Although I had some playful intentions when I was with you, I never meant to play with you. I did want you with me, that’s true.”

Qiao Yutong rolled her eyes and said, “Go be a mistress for you? No, not even a mistress—it’d be Little Four, Little Five, Little Six. I’m not that low.”

Song Xiaodong shook his head and said, “All the women in my house are equal; there’s no hierarchy. You’d see that if you were with us long enough.”

“Wow, you’ve got quite the skill, balancing them all so well!” Qiao Yutong snorted again.

“Only a fool would believe that. Anyway, I’m leaving. Thanks for real, as long as it doesn’t involve trading my body, feel free to ask for a favor in return.” With that, Qiao Yutong got into her car.

Watching her leave, Song Xiaodong shook his head. The girl had quite the character, but regardless, she had a unique charisma that he liked.

Just after Qiao Yutong’s car pulled away, she received a call from a deputy director of the branch office.

“Hello, Director Wang!” Qiao Yutong put on her headphones before answering the call.

“Xiao Qiao, there’s a gathering tonight. Can you join us?”

“What kind of gathering?” Qiao Yutong frowned; she really didn’t like attending these events.

“It’s with people from the provincial public security department. It’s a rare opportunity and very important for our office’s funding and personnel appointments.”

Despite still frowning, Qiao Yutong understood that budget constraints were real. If they could secure more funding, it would make things much easier for handling cases.

“Alright, I’ll be there.”

“Oh, and dress nicely, no uniforms.”

Qiao Yutong frowned again. She didn’t really have nice clothes; she usually wore her police uniform or casual wear. Dressing up nicely was a bit of a challenge.

After searching at home, she ended up in casual wear but applied a bit of light makeup, steeling herself before heading to the arranged restaurant.

“Xiao Qiao, didn’t I tell you to dress nicely?” Deputy Director Wang frowned at her.

With a shrug of helplessness, Qiao Yutong said, “Director Wang, I don’t have any nice clothes, and there wasn’t time to buy anything.”

Another director, surnamed Zhao, waved it off, saying, “No need, no need. Xiao Qiao looks fine as she is, like a lotus emerging from clear water.”

Only then did Qiao Yutong breathe a sigh of relief. She glanced around. Besides the two deputy directors, there was another woman in her twenties whom she didn’t recognize. She had delicate makeup and was dressed gorgeously, looking quite beautiful.

“Just the four of us?” Qiao Yutong asked.

Deputy Director Wang replied, “Yeah, Xiao Qiao. Just to let you know, the person we’re meeting is significant, so we must make a good impression. When the time comes to toast, don’t hold back.”

Qiao Yutong said, “Alright, it’s just drinking. I’ll do my best.”

Deputy Director Wang frowned and said, “It’s not just about drinking. You need to converse well too. I know you have a bit of a temper, so keep it in check. Watch how Xiao Liang does things.”

The girl named Xiao Liang extended her hand to Qiao Yutong and said, “Hello, Director Qiao, I’m from the branch office.”

“Hi.” Qiao Yutong shook her hand, feeling a bit awkward. It seemed like she and Xiao Liang were just there as escorts or companions for the evening, which felt a bit uncomfortable.
