Rey slipped out of class, his footsteps echoing faintly in the empty corridor. He ducked into the bathroom, pushing the door closed behind him.
The unease from Aidenâs earlier words still gnawed at his chest.
He turned toward the mirror, gripping the sink. âWhat did you just say?â His voice wavered.
Aidenâs calm tone carried through the silence. âI said⊠your friend is no longer in this world.â
The words sent a chill down Reyâs spine. His fists tightened as his thoughts raced back to the factory. Evan had escaped while the thugs fell one by one. The others had no reason to harm him. So⊠why?
âThen whereâs his body?â Rey demanded, his voice trembling. âIâll find him. Iâll bury him myself if I have to. At least then his soulââ
âWhat are you rambling about?â Aiden cut in, almost irritated. âWhen did I say he was dead?â
Rey froze. ââŠHuh?â
âI meant exactly what I said. Heâs not in
this
world. Heâs alive, just⊠somewhere else.â
The tension in Reyâs chest loosened, but not by much. âYou mean⊠heâs neither here, nor gone?â
âCorrect. He was transportedâteleportedâto another realm entirely. Not in this universe. And until youâre strong enough to walk the cosmos river, thereâs no way to reach him.â
Rey staggered back against the stall door, his mind a whirl. âAnother worldâŠâ
âYouâll understand when youâre stronger,â Aiden said. âThatâs how it always goes. When does a protagonist ever learn the truth early on?â His lips curled faintly. âYouâd shatter under it.â
Rey flinched, recalling the searing agony of the bondâs formation. That had only been a harmless tether, yet it nearly ripped him apart. What would a true injury to his soul do? He didnât want to imagine.
Aidenâs voice steadied, as though measuring his words. âThere was an artifact hidden in that factory. My guess is your friend stumbled upon it while fleeing. Zero and I sensed spatial fluctuations. Thatâs how he slipped away.â
âButâŠâ Reyâs brow furrowed. âWhy would Evan know about something like that? And why only now?â
âThe dreams,â Aiden replied simply. âThe ones he told you about. They werenât dreams. They were memories bleeding through.â
Reyâs pulse quickened. âWait⊠you meanââ
Aidenâs eyes narrowed. âYes. Heâs a reincarnated soul.â
Silence fell. Reyâs breath caught.
ââŠWhat did you say?â His voice cracked.
âA reincarnated soul from the
future
,â Aiden explained, his tone heavy. âHe must have lived a life far ahead of ours, met his end, and returned here to change it.â
Rey shook his head violently. âNo. That makes no sense. He never acted like one. No cryptic words, no sudden change, no arrogance like those characters in manga. He was just⊠Evan.â
âLife isnât a manga, boy,â Aiden snapped, his patience thinning. âThe truly powerful hide their truths. And only rare artifacts allow such long-reaching returns without breaking the soul. He wouldnât flaunt it. Not if he valued survival.â
Rey clenched his jaw, his anger simmering. âSo he kept it from me? From all of us? If this turns out true, Iâllââ
Before he could finish, a voice snapped from the next stall.
âOi, nerd. Can you stop whispering to your little girlfriend? Some of us actually need to use this place. Go roleplay outside.â
Knocks followed, laughter trickling in from the other stalls. Reyâs ears burned. He rushed out, covering his face with a hand, desperate not to become todayâs rumour mill.
He forgot one thingâtoday was his last day of school.
Back in the corridor, he exhaled hard. âAt least⊠I should check Evanâs place. Tell his landlord. Someone else could use the room.â
By the time he reached his classroom, James was already waiting at the door, leaning casually against the wall. His sharp eyes locked onto Rey the moment he appeared.
âOh, finally,â James muttered. âYou really donât know anything, do you?â
Rey tilted his head, confused. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou were gone two days,â James reminded him. âYesterday, the teacher announced that today wouldnât be a lesson. Just exam info. Half-day dismissal.â
ââŠSo thatâs why everyone seemed so free earlier.â Rey scratched his head.
James frowned. âAnd what was that thing you said in class earlier? Alsoâstop making that face. It doesnât suit you anymore.â
Rey blinked, then straightened up. âI was saying⊠we should go to Evanâs house after this.â
James studied him, then nodded slowly. âAlright. Letâs go.â
