“It’s okay, don’t be afraid.” Sheng Ning gave her a comforting smile and packed the basket onto the cart, following Liu Cuixia.

Mayor Liu’s house was right next to the township government. On the way, Liu Cuixia kept bad-mouthing Sheng Ning, trying to drive her away, but Sheng Ning insisted on going in.

As soon as they entered, they were greeted by the stern-faced mayor. He was a man in his fifties who, not having to engage in farm work, looked much younger than the average rural person.

Initially, the mayor was taken aback when he saw the two of them. After he came to, he politely said, “So Ningning and An’an are here. Please sit down; stay for lunch.”

Liu Cuixia widened her eyes at this and retorted, “We don’t have that much food.”

“Shut your mouth and go make food.” The mayor’s face turned serious, scaring Liu Cuixia, who gave Sheng An a resentful glance before turning to go to the kitchen.

Sheng Ning watched coldly, her mind estimating who’s in charge and who calls the shots in the house with a good degree of accuracy. Actually, the mayor’s family and the Sheng family had some distant relationship; otherwise, her mother wouldn’t have sought help here.

This so-called relative, no matter how close, couldn’t compare to their own son. An’an marrying into the family had to face her mother-in-law’s nitpicking and the abuse of a foolish husband; it was a miracle she could survive.

She turned her head to look around but didn’t see the so-called fool.

The mayor noticed her actions but remained calm and said, “Ningning, when did you come back? How’s work at the Song and Dance Troupe?”

“It’s going quite well.” Sheng Ning sat gracefully on the mayor’s sofa, looking at him with neither humility nor arrogance, her tone perfectly controlled.

“Uncle Liu, the main reason I came this time was to thank you for the help you provided to our family. Without your care, I certainly wouldn’t have gotten into the Song and Dance Troupe.”

“That’s all part of my duties as mayor.” His official tone was strong, never once mentioning that his help was in exchange for Sheng An’s marriage.

“Hearing you say that, I know you’re a good mayor who treats us ordinary folks like family. When I get back, I’m going to make a banner for you and send it to the township government.”

Sheng Ning’s words greatly pleased Mayor Liu, who repeatedly praised her sensibility.

Sheng Ning reassuredly patted Sheng An’s hand and continued calmly, “This is a favor you can definitely help with. I’ve come to help An’an get a divorce.” She used “help,” not “wish,” making her attitude very clear.

“What did you say?” Mayor Liu’s expression changed drastically, and he suddenly stood up.

Liu Cuixia, who was eavesdropping in the kitchen, also stormed out, pointing at Sheng Ning’s nose and cursing, “You wretch, what are you talking about? Our family helped you, and now you want to burn bridges after crossing? I tell you, there’s no way.”
