Amanda was on the verge of collapsing from how violently her heart was pounding.
She could barely contain her elation and excitement as she slipped out of the classroom first, while Kyle remained seated, packing his bag.
She didnât know what had changed, but somehow, since this morning, Kyleâs behavior around her had been different... almost gentle.
Was it because she went to his house yesterday? Did that change anything? Was it pity or guilt? She didnât know. And truthfully, she didnât want to find out either.
What mattered was that she wanted to get closer to him, no matter the reason or source. Even if it was just one step, one extra word, one warm look, she would gladly accept it from him.
She loved him far too much to let him go. What had once seemed like a long, winding path to stand by his side again, all that planning and plotting, now felt unnecessary. It seemed she wouldnât have to take that roundabout route after all.
Something had changed, and Amanda welcomed it with all her heart.
"Amanda."
A voice came from behind.
She frowned and turned. "Clara? What do you need?"
The pink-haired girl hugged her books against her chest and stepped closer. "Where are you going? Have you forgotten our meeting today?"
Amanda nearly clicked her tongue. Another meeting for the same mission. How much was there to discuss that they had to meet every evening for the past three days?
"And before you get annoyed about things being repetitive, thereâs another reason you need to be there," Clara added, much to Amandaâs frustration.
"Now what?" she asked, crossing her arms.
Clara tilted her head, her brows lifting slightly. "I hope you havenât forgotten what happened yesterday. A rogue Nightwalker collapsed the entire building. He was caught on camera, and since you were an eyewitness to the chaos, you need to be there."
Amanda frowned. Right, the incident. She had seen someone whose eyes were almost identical to Kyleâs, but when she visited his house, he hadnât appeared injured.
She knew the PSC would make an issue out of it, not because of the damaged building, but because of the anomaly that had been surfacing over the past few days.
This time, it had revealed a far more prominent side of itself. And Amanda, being one of the primary witnesses, would have to report everything in detail.
"Everyone is waiting for you. Letâs go," Clara said.
But thenâ
"Iâll join you in a bit. I need to use the restroom."
Clara narrowed her eyes. "Youâre lying, arenât you? You just want to wait for your ex."
Amanda shrugged. "Isnât that good for you? I mean, you donât like Ethan nagging at me all the time, so use this chance to bitch about me and get closer to him. Like you always do."
Claraâs face heated up, her eyes widening as she snapped back, "Donât get ahead of yourself! I donât need to use you to get closer to him!"
Stomping her foot, she turned away. "Forget it. If you get punished for being late, I wonât be responsible."
Amanda rolled her eyes. Like hell a mere punishment would stop her from meeting Kyle.
She glanced around to make sure no one was watching before breaking into a sprint.
Taking the stairs, she reached the third floor.
This floor was under renovation, so the students assigned here had been moved to another building. Right now, the corridor was completely empty.
She took a deep breath and walked toward the lockers.
Her eyes scanned the area, searching for the person she had come to meet, her lips curving on their own in anticipation.
Then, suddenly, someone grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the narrow gap between two rows of lockers.
"Mmf?" Amanda blinked in surprise as her back brushed against the cold wall. Her mouth was covered, her eyes widening as they met a familiar gaze.
Her heart melted.
Kyle... Kyle... it was Kyle!
She relaxed in his hold, not resisting, not even trying to speak.
Kyle let out a quiet breath at the sight of her softened eyes, but before removing his hand, he warned, "Someone is chasing you, and thereâs a camera on this floor, so keep your voice low, okay?"
Amanda understood instantly, her gaze sharpening as she nodded without hesitation.
Kyle slowly removed his hand.
A moment later, she wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her cheek against his chest, holding him tightly.
Kyle froze for a second before his lips curved into a helpless smile.
"Kyle... Kyle... I missed you... I missed you so much.... Kyle..." Her voice trembled, heavy with emotion, and it weighed on his heart.
He wanted to let her hold him for as long as she wished, butâ
[Host, the target is approaching the third floor. Hurry.]
Kyle nearly clicked his tongue. That damn blonde bitch was stalking Amanda now.
He had to act fast, or he would start spreading rumors that might leave him and Amanda with no choice but to stay away from each other.
So he spoke quickly, "Amanda, I need you to do something for me."
"Anything my Kyle wants," Amanda replied, completely love-struck.
Caressing her head, he said softly, "If my brother asks you about the potion, tell him it was you who gave it to me through your connections."
Amanda flinched and slowly looked up, though her arms remained wrapped around him. "Your brother... but Kyle..."
"I know what youâre going to say, but thatâs not true anymore. Blake is healed, and youâll find out soon enough."
[Host, the target is on the third floor.]
Kyle hurried, "If he asks you anything about potions, make it seem like you were the one who supplied them to me, okay?"
Amanda was so confused that she could only stare into his eyes, getting lost in them. Still, she didnât ignore his words and nodded faintly. "Okay."
[Host, the target is getting closer.]
Kyle clicked his tongue and turned.
Amanda blinked in shock, thinking he was about to leave. But she wanted to hold him longer...
Then, suddenly, her irises thinned, her mind going blank.
A golden hue formed in Kyleâs hand, shaping into a bow.
Genesis flooded the corridor, freezing not only her, but Ethan as well.
Kyle took a deep breath and drew the bowstring before saying, "Run."
With that, he released the arrow. It struck the wall across from them, and a blinding light exploded throughout the corridor.
Amanda was stunned by everything happening around her. Before she could gather her thoughts, Kyle was already gone.
Thud
She dropped to her knees, still at the exact spot where he had left her.
So...she didnât see wrong.
Kyle...indeed was that...rogue Nightwalker.
