Chapter 294 Closure and Business Introduction
Luke said, âSo, did Lady Heatherâs sister ever mention where is the evidence that Todd killed Kelly? I suspect that Kelly refers to Toddâs ex-wife.â
Old Greyson: âIâll ask.â
Luke hung up and waited.
Half an hour later, Old Greyson sent Luke a message that there was a basement in Toddâs house that had been sealed for two years.
Seeing that another ambulance had arrived and the paramedics had started working, Luke looked at the truck and sighed. âIt seems that they really will be plagued with bad luck.â
Slightly disappointed, he walked to his car.
Selina greeted him. âOkay, letâs call it a day. Iâve transferred the job over to the hospital and the police department.â
Luke relaxed; he didnât have to waste time talking to other people anymore. âWhat do you want to eat tonight?â
Selina said, âBarbecue.â
Luke was amused. âOkay, letâs buy the meat first and then go home.â
After the barbecue, Selina did the dishes and went to train, while Luke went out again with Secretary Jenny.
Since Luke had agreed to two nights, he certainly had to keep his promise.
At midnight, Luke received Old Greysonâs call.
He answered the phone on the balcony. âHey, whatâs wrong?â Old Greyson said, âNothing, I just want to take her back sooner.â
Luke thought for a moment and said, âAsk her if she wants to sue Todd for compensation over Sarahâs death. If she does, she better gather all the evidence together quickly, since the matter of Toddâs ex-wife will be reported tomorrow.â
Todd was dead, but he still had property under his name.
As Sarahâs sister, Lady Heather had the right to sue Todd.
Once it was proven that he was Sarahâs killer, Sarahâs family would be able to get a share of his assets.
But if Lady Heather was slow to act, Toddâs money might all go to his ex-wifeâs family as compensation, and it would become tricky then.
After a brief silence, Old Greyson said, âOkay, Iâll talk to her. Also... thank you.â
Luke: âHm, let me ask you something. Are the two of you... Forget it. Bye.â
As soon as he started to ask the question, he felt that he had crossed the line.
So far, Old Greyson had never asked questions about his personal life, so it was obviously inappropriate for Luke to do so in return.
If there was anything between them, Old Greyson wouldâve introduced her outright as his girlfriend or wife. The next day, Luke and Selina found Elsa and told her what happened last night.
Of course, they simply said that they went to Toddâs house because they received information from a source.
Elsa looked at Luke and asked, âSo, whatâs the lead?â
She wouldnât ask who the source was. She wouldnât tell Luke who her sources were either.
They were a detectiveâs personal connections. The more people knew about them, the more danger they would be in. Luke said, âTodd probably killed his ex-wife and buried her in cement in his basement.â
Elsa was stunned. âHoly sh*t! That guyâs so ruthless?â
She trusted Luke because most of what Luke said had turned out to be true so far.
âAre you going to follow up on the case?â asked Elsa.
Luke quickly shook his head. âIf your new partner is free, boss, itâll be a good opportunity for him to gain more experience.â
Elsa rolled her eyes. âOkay, Iâll remind Simmons to take a few more evidence bags with him.â
Luke gave her a thumbs up and left.
What were the bags for? To contain the vomit, of course.
Todd had been single for years, which meant that his ex-wife had been missing for years.
Luke certainly wasnât interested in examining a body that had been buried for years.
Lukeâs phone rang after he left Elsaâs office. Looking at the number, Luke picked up the call. âHello, Jennifer. How can I help you?â
After a brief hesitation, Jennifer said on the phone, âIâve hired a new security team, and I was wondering if you could help me take a look at them.â
Luke thought for a moment before agreeing to her request.
The woman had just donated two million dollars to the police department. It wouldnât be good if he came across as too cold.
He spoke to Elsa before leaving for Jenniferâs house with Selina.
Jennifer received them in the garden. After the maid served them some drinks, she said, âThanks for dropping by. Iâve been feeling uneasy since what happened a couple of days ago, so Iâm hoping that you can check my security arrangements and see if there are any flaws or shortcomings.â
Luke was speechless for a moment. He then said, âJennifer, Iâm afraid you might have misunderstood something. Weâre police detectives. Weâre not trained to protect people, and we might not be able to pick out the flaws in your security if they exist.â
Jennifer was completely lost. âHuh? But I thought youâre quite good. You found Thomson out so quickly.â Luke was amused. âCracking cases and protecting key figures are two different things. I really donât think I can help.â
Thinking for a moment, he then said, âHowever, I know a professional whoâs good at
it.â
Jennifer asked, âYour colleague?â
Luke shook his head. âDo you know Sheerah?â
Jennifer frowned and thought for a moment. âThe singer?â
Luke nodded. âYes, she hired a bunch of professionals as security guards for her concert. Thereâs a guy called Bryan whoâs quite good. If you want, I can help get you his contact.â
Jennifer didnât seem reassured. âBut you donât know them well, do you?â
Luke chuckled. âBryan and his team are professionals. Also, youâre only hiring them to inspect your security, not to protect you forever. You donât have to worry.â
After a brief hesitation, Jennifer agreed to the plan.
Luke called Sheerah and asked about Bryanâs team. They were indeed professionals, and they charged pretty high, too. Sheerah had paid almost a hundred thousand dollars for their protection services at her concert previously, and that was still a family/ friend rate since she knew someone in Bryanâs team.
Bryanâs team was picky as well. They only accepted quick and short jobs, and refused tricky ones that might take a while.
Sheerah specifically stated that the team was made of retirees, and they werenât really doing this for the money.
