Chapter 315 Gratitude
After Selina left, Elizabeth finally expressed her gratitude to Luke solemnly.
Samantha had already told Elizabeth what happened, particularly the part where Luke rescued many residents, including her family.
Without Luke, the whole town couldâve ended up as the spidersâ food. Luke quickly interrupted her. âAlright, thatâs enough. I helped your family, so you better work harder in return. Did your mother mention that sheâs coming over with your siblings?â
Elizabeth nodded. âShe did. Iâll take care of them.â
Luke thought for a moment before he continued, âDo you remember that Chris?â
Elizabeth smiled in embarrassment. âI do. Heâs my motherâs... old classmate.â
Luke could tell from her face that she knew about their relationship. He nodded with a smile. âGood to know.â
They talked for another ten minutes. Then, Elizabeth went to the kitchen and thanked Selina as well.
A few minutes later, Luke saw her off.
At the door, Luke suddenly asked, âElizabeth, if you become rich someday, like, super rich, will you continue doing this dangerous job?â
Elizabeth considered for a moment before replying with a smile, âYouâre already very rich. Why are you still doing this job?â She pointed at the house behind her.
Luke shrugged. âItâs more of a hobby. A life without anything to work on would be too boring.â
Elizabeth nodded. âI think so too. When Iâm older, I may consider transferring to a different post. But right now... I love my job.â
Luke patted her shoulder and said, âRemember that, and have a good rest. Iâll see you at work tomorrow.â
Elizabeth chuckled. âOkay, weâre waiting for you to come back. Iâm leaving.â
Watching her get into her car, Luke closed the door and turned around, and Selina looked at him playfully. âYouâre more and more proactive now, arenât you?â
Luke sat down on the couch. âProactive about what?â
Selina said, âAbout girls, of course.â
Luke rolled his eyes. âIf you think thatâs being proactive, wouldnât Dustin be harassing his female subordinates every day?â
Lost for words, Selina asked him a moment later, âDo you have high hopes for her?â
Luke nodded. âPretty much. Given how smart she is, and her diploma and her diligence, sheâll become a sergeant in a few years with any luck, and my support then wonât be as valuable as it is right now.â
Selina wasnât convinced. âYouâre lying. Thatâs definitely not the reason why you asked her what she would do if she were rich.â
Luke admitted it. âIâm only checking out the situation beforehand, in case I lose a capable helper. If that happens, thereâll be too many things for you to do.â
Selina thought for a moment. âAre you saying that sheâs going to be rich soon?â
Luke said, âIâm not sure. She might not be the one whoâs gonna get rich, but it doesnât hurt to ask. Okay. Take a break. Weâll start training later.â
Selina was speechless. âThis is definitely payback, isnât it?â
The next morning, Selina was woken up by Lukeâs alarm. She enjoyed Lukeâs breakfast and went to work with Lukeâs dessert in a good mood.
They went to Elsa, but saw that Martin and Roger were in her office.
Naturally, they didnât barge in. Luke quickly turned around and led Selina back to their desks, where he observed the door to Elsaâs office from afar.
Roger had gotten Luke involved in an assignment last time to split the risks, but then they were ambushed by Bullseye.
Luke decided that he needed to keep a distance from that guy, or he might be caught up in yet another disaster.
The battle against Bullseye actually wasnât a big deal, since it wouldâve happened sooner or later. However, Luke suspected that Roger was a harbinger of misfortune. Why else would his partner Martin look so wretched?
Very soon, Roger and Martin left the office. They didnât notice the two people hiding in the distance.
Luke and Selina slipped into the office and closed the door.
âBoss, whatâs with Roger and Martin?â asked Luke casually.
Elsa sighed. âMartin... hasnât been in good condition recently. He needs more rest. So, they came to talk to me and transferred their cases to us.â
Luke frowned. âWhat happened to Martin?â
Elsa shook her head. âDonât ask, and donât tell anyone else, but he canât take any cases for the foreseeable future.â
Luke got it.
If it was just a short break to readjust, a detective would only transfer the urgent cases at most so that the investigations wouldnât be held up.
But Elsa had implied that those two had transferred most of their cases, and that it was possible that Martin might stop being a police officer.
That wasnât unprecedented.
Family mishaps, trauma, serious illnesses and many other reasons could prevent a police officer from working. They could only take a break, and after a period of time, they might resign.
Elsa clearly wasnât happy about it either.
Martin had only just transferred to the Major Crimes Division a few months ago, and Elsa wasnât very familiar with him, but Roger was a seasoned detective in the department.
It was obvious that Martinâs problem had something to do with Roger.
An officerâs partner was like their spouse. If they had a terrible one, work would be a nightmare.
Elsa stopped the unpleasant conversation and said, âNow, you need to pick up their important cases.â
Luke nodded and asked, âWhere are the case files?â
Elsa jerked her chin to the side.
Luke and Selina looked over, only to see a stack of files that was more than thirty centimeters tall.
âYouâre kidding.â Luke turned around and looked at Elsa suspiciously.
Elizabeth sighed helplessly. âSadly, Iâm not. Itâs the bossâs order. Yours are just the important ones. Actually, most of the cases have already been given to Elizabeth and Billy. I even have to work on some of them myself.â
Luke chuckled. âTruly appreciate your efforts, boss.â
There was nothing he could say now; he couldnât avoid it since even Elsa herself had been assigned some cases.Luke picked up the files, and Selina put the dessert down as usual, before they returned to their desks.
Elizabeth and Billy greeted them and said, âGood to have you back.â
Luke threw the case files onto the table. âWeâve got a lot of work to do.â
Elizabeth chuckled. âThatâs why I said last night that weâre waiting for you.â
Selina said, âThanks very much, Elizabeth. You let us have a good nightâs sleep, at least.â
Elizabeth said, âYouâre welcome, I only did what I should.â
Naturally, Luke and Selina didnât blame Elizabeth for not informing them earlier, since they had already been assigned the cases.
There were even more case files on Elizabeth and Billyâs desks. Stacked together, the pile would be more than fifty centimeters tall.
