Chapter 897: Visiting Someone Empty-Handed, and Talking with a Friend
Selina was too lazy to deal with his nonsense. She glanced at him and asked, âWhy is Elena in America? On holiday?â
Luke picked up a bun and said casually, âSheâs an exchange student now.â
Selina nodded and didnât ask any more questions.
Luke had never been an ascetic.
He would go out at night in Los Angeles.
Most of the time, he went to look for Jenny, and also spent the occasional night with Jimena.
There were two other women, but she didnât ask who they were. He didnât see them often.
Given Lukeâs age, background, and physique, this was already a very low number of women.
Unlike some college basketball players, for example, who simply partied every night and refused no one.
Also, Jenny had been very busy recently.
After coming to New York, Luke had only seen Jenny once.
Elenaâs appearance simply restored the rhythm of Lukeâs life from L.A..
Selina was too lazy to say anything.
It was still a busy day, but Luke and Selina were idle.
They naturally wouldnât investigate the body dump at Whitestone Park, and Kilgrave, the target of their real investigation, was already dead.
At noon, the two of them went out in the name of looking for clues in the afternoon, then came home to train and work.
But later in the afternoon, someone knocked on Lukeâs door.
Luke, who was working on the first floor, wiped his hands and opened the door.
Outside the door were two familiar faces.
He greeted them with a smile. âFoggy, Matt, why are you here today?â
Foggy said, âI heard from Charlie that you were back, so I came to take a look.â
Seeing the look on his face, Luke simply opened the door and let them in. âCome in. Youâre definitely not here to visit a new neighbor, or you wouldâve at least brought some fruit or snacks.â
Both Foggy and Matt were embarrassed when they realized that they had indeed forgotten.
It was their first time visiting their new neighbor, but they had come empty-handed, which usually implied that they werenât on very good terms.
Luke waited for them to enter before he closed the door.
He turned around and smiled. âAlright, it was just a joke. Donât take it to heart.â
On the second floor, Luke served them coffee. After they sat down, he said, âIf thereâs something on your mind, just say it. Also, your business is booming. You must be busy.â
When they heard that and remembered their âbusiness,â they smiled bitterly.
A moment later, Foggy said, âHereâs the thing: We heard that a police officer was attacked recently?â
Luke nodded.
The police had been very active in recent days, and even uprooted the Blood Skull gang. It wasnât a secret at all.
Foggy hesitated and lowered his voice. âI also heard that it was Lieutenant Walter who was injured?â
Luke nodded again. âItâs him.â
âWas he badly hurt?â asked Foggy.
Luke said, âHeâll be out of commission for about a month. However, he almost died from his injuries on the night of the attack. He was very lucky to survive.â
âI hope he recovers.â Foggy frowned. âDo you think it has anything to do with his investigation of the explosions?â
Pondering for a moment, Luke looked at the two of them and nodded. âThat should be the case.â
Foggy looked awful. âWas it really the black mask?â
Luke shook his head. âWe found the attackers. Theyâre part of a gang; it wasnât that Mr. Black Mask.â
He didnât look at Matt at all.
Looking at Foggyâs face, he smiled. âFoggy, the Detective Bureau isnât focused on capturing the black mask.â
Foggy was puzzled. âWhy?â He knew that the police had issued a warrant for the black mask, accusing him of assault and a terrorist attack.
Luke shrugged and said, âIâve heard a lot about the black mask from the Temples. Most of the negative comments about him come from the 15th Precinct. A few of my colleagues warned me that the 15th Precinct isnât trustworthy.â
Foggy was lost for words.
Luke took a sip of coffee and played with the cup. âEven the Detective Bureau doesnât believe the 15th Precinctâs nonsense. Also, when Walter was investigating the explosions, someone in a black hood beat him up. Youâre familiar with this operation, right?â
As lawyers, Foggy and Matt certainly had more experience with it than the police.
âA set up!â said Foggy through gritted teeth.
He had quite a close connection to this case.
He had also been a victim of the explosions that night, but he was lucky that he wasnât seriously injured.
Some of the other innocent victims were heavily wounded, and a lot of them had lost their possessions, such as old lady Elena.
If it wasnât the black mask who had caused those explosions, then his hostility all this time had been misplaced.
âDo you have any preliminary conclusions?â Foggy couldnât help but ask.
Luke took a sip of his coffee and said, âThat depends on whether youâre here as a lawyer or as a friend.â
Foggy was stunned, but Matt understood: As friends, this was inside information. As lawyers, Luke had no comment.
âI guarantee that this is just a conversation between friends,â Matt, who had been quiet, suddenly interjected.
Luke raised an eyebrow and looked at Foggy. âWhat do you think?â
Foggy nodded decisively. âThis is just a chat. Only the three of us know the details.â
Luke nodded and put down his coffee before picking up a slice of cake and taking a bite. âOn the surface, all the evidence points to a gang called Blood Skull in Brooklyn. Almost all the members of the gang have been thrown into custody, except for the missing boss, Billy Wharton.â
Foggy and Matt listened attentively.
Luke took another bite of the cake. âAccording to the two attackers, this Billy Wharton was the mastermind.â
Both Foggy and Matt frowned.
The Blood Skull was only one of the smaller gangs in Brooklyn.
If Billy Wharton had really planned the explosions, then this missing person hadnât gained much from it.
Looking at their expressions, Luke continued, âHowever, we believe that Billy was only the hired hand, and the mastermind behind the explosions should be one of Kingpinâs men.â
âKingpin?â repeated Foggy blankly; he clearly didnât know this name.
Mattâs expression didnât change, but he leaned forward slightly, and was clearly very interested in the name.
