Chapter 976: Stealing from a Dog to Treat Others
The law in America didnât protect the party at fault during a divorce.
Most of the time, the law would be more inclined to protect the woman. The âwronged partyâ here naturally referred to women as well.
For many middle-aged men, the âex-wifeâ was the most destructive weapon.
It was impossible for these men to be clean in a divorce, and they had to shoulder a huge debt.
It wasnât uncommon for a man to go bankrupt in a divorce.
Because of that, more and more Americans chose not to get married. Some families had two or three children, but the parents still werenât officially married.
The cost of getting a divorce was too high, to the point that most people didnât have the courage to get married.
Once this woman lost this protection, her husband would be able to escape unscathed and could even demand a share of her assets.
Alarm bells rang in her head, and she quickly shook her head. âNo, we were just talking.â
Luke was unconvinced. âI think I heard you accuse her of attempted murder?â
He shifted his gaze to the slender and petite figure next to him.
The couple looked at each other, then shook their heads at the same time. âNo, you heard wrong. We only argued for a bit, but everythingâs fine now. Weâre leaving now.â
Luke raised his hand. âYou have to get her permission first. Otherwise, youâll have to give formal statements and your IDs need to be recorded so that you wonât complain that NYPD didnât -â
The petite figure in front of him lowered her head and said gloomily, âIt was just a quarrel. Can you tell them to beat it?â
Luke nodded and looked at the couple.
The couple was confused. âWhatâs wrong?â
Luke said, âDo you need me to tell you to hurry up and leave, and stop wasting NYPDâs resources?â
The couple was stunned for two seconds before they realized that Luke was telling them to get lost.
But after what Luke said, they no longer dared to be as arrogant as before. They werenât like the Soderbergs, and werenât qualified to boss NYPD around.
Hearing that, both of them were depressed, but they turned around and left the hall without hesitation.
Luke raised his hand and said, âLetâs sit down and clarify this matter, Miss Jones.â
Hearing his voice, Jessica Jones couldnât help but look up at his face again. She quickly lowered her head and followed him.
When they reached his desk, Luke grabbed a chair and gestured for her to sit down. He grabbed a bag of cupcakes from the dog head hiding under the desk, and placed it in front of Jessica. âHave a snack. Try it, and tell me everything.â
Jessica stared blankly at the two cupcakes that were sticking out of the paper bag, and there was a strange feeling in her heart.
Luke took out another carton of milk from the drawer. âIf itâs too dry, you can have some milk.â
After holding the cake for a moment, Jessica put it back into the bag in the end. âSomeone approached me about investigating the man having an affair. In the end, these two set me up and wanted to get even with me.â
Luke: âHuh?â
Jessica said, âExactly what you think. I investigated that woman before. Her husband wants to divorce her, but he doesnât want to go bankrupt.â
Luke said, âIf she blows up this matter, wonât she lose the lawsuit?â
Jessica said, âWithout this incident, she wouldâve most likely lost. With this, she wouldâve lost for sure. If she had brains, she wouldnât have found a boyfriend in the middle of her divorce.â
Luke was lost for words. He could only change the subject. âWhy did they say that you tried to murder them?â
Jessica said, âBecause I smashed up the place where they were having their affair. They were probably afraid that I would smash them up too.â
Luke was shocked. âYour firm does demolition as well?â
Jessica rolled her eyes in annoyance. âThat was because they have such foul mouths. It was like I was taking photos of her stealing something big.â
Luke thought for a moment. âDivorce isnât a small matter, right?â
Jessica said, âSheâs going through a divorce anyway. Itâs just that she might not be able to get the money. What she wants is the money; sheâs not interested in saving her marriage.â
Luke had a rough idea of the situation, and wasnât interested in continuing the investigation.
He found Jessica even more pleasing to the eye. Naturally, he wouldnât help that sh*tty couple with such a petty dispute. âOkay, then itâs fine. You can leave anytime. Hm, you can leave after youâre done eating.â
Saying that, he ignored her, and started going through information on his computer.
After a brief silence, Jessica stood up and took a step, before she stopped. She then turned around, grabbed the bag of cupcakes from the table, and left quickly.
After she disappeared, Selina looked at him teasingly. âI donât think this one is easy to flirt with.â
Luke looked away from the screen and chuckled at her. Could he say that if he hadnât been so determined last time, the woman wouldâve had her way with him?
He didnât want to give ânaiveâ Selina a blow. Just let her enjoy herself.
Behind her, John winked at Luke and gestured for them to go to the lounge.
Luke got up and took another bag of cupcakes from Gold Nugget under the table.
Gold Nugget whined, half-heartedly expressing its dissatisfaction with Luke snatching food from a dog. It then took out the 25th bag of cupcakes from the box next to it and started eating.
In any case, they were all common goods to pass the time. The fiend could take them if he wanted.
In the lounge, Luke tossed the paper bag over.
John, who had already sat down on the couch and was sighing comfortably, caught the bag. He opened it and started eating without hesitation. âYou need my help with something?â
Luke said, âEverybody in the office has some.â
Johnâs hand paused. âEverybody?â
Luke said, âAbout 150 bags.â
John was speechless.
There were slightly under 180 people in this department, and two-thirds of them at most came to the police department every day.
His words were muffled as he chewed the cake. âYou might as well open a bakery. Itâs much better than being a detective.â
Luke looked at him like he was an idiot.
John was a classic example of someone who looked rough but had quick wits. His careless actions and appearance couldnât hide his meticulousness as a top detective. One look at Lukeâs expression and he knew that he had said something wrong. âHm, isnât that the case?â
Luke said, âIf you hadnât blown up part of Nakatomi Plaza and caused millions of dollars in damage, Iâm sure Takagi wouldâve given you hundreds of thousands of dollars as a personal reward.â
John snorted. âI was too busy killing the guys with the RPGs... Wait, how do you know Takagi would have given me a personal reward?â
Luke smiled without saying anything.
John didnât need him to say anything else. He slapped his head in frustration. âThen, did I f*cking lose out on hundreds of thousands?â
Luke chuckled. âLook on the bright side.â
John: âHuh?â
Luke said, âCompared with a reward of hundreds of thousands, the best thing is that you didnât lose millions. Itâs not like you could have gotten NYPD to settle your debt in Los Angeles.â
