Sierra Sullivan was already on the verge of collapse from exhaustion, but when she suddenly heard Hugo Cheneyâs voice, her entire body surged with newfound strength.
And a whole lot of fury.
Hugo Cheney, with a group in tow, strode toward them.
The moment he arrived, his gaze fell upon the Aberrant Beastâs corpse on the ground, his eyes filled with greed.
From past experience, the size of a Crystal Core was directly related to the size of the Aberrant Beast.
This Aberrant Beast was enormous, so its Crystal Core was bound to be huge.
And the larger the Crystal Core, the more powerful the energy contained within.
âIf I can get my hands on this Crystal Core, my Superpower will definitely see a massive boost!â
Just the thought of it made Hugo Cheneyâs heart burn with desire.
Jayce watched Hugo Cheney coolly. "Wipe that disgusting look off your face. The Crystal Core inside this Aberrant Beast has nothing to do with you. Donât even think about it."
Hugo Cheney looked over with a smile. "Just because you say so? Who do you think you are? This Aberrant Beast came to our area first. We fought it off, and then it came over here. You guys just picked up our scraps! If we hadnât worn it down first, do you really think you could have taken it down by yourselves? Dream on!
Iâm not an unreasonable person. You did put in some effort, so I canât just leave you with nothing. How about this: you can have the Exotic Beast Meat. I wonât take a single piece! But the Crystal Core must be mine."
"Itâs yours just because you say so?" Jayce sneered. "If you want it, letâs see if you have what it takes to get it!"
"Jayce!" Hugo Cheney looked disappointed. "Weâre from the same base; we shouldnât be fighting amongst ourselves! Infighting at a time like this doesnât benefit you, me, or the base! Iâve already made a concession, so why are you pushing me so aggressively? This isnât good! It undermines the unity of the base! If I were you, I wouldnât do something like this. I only take whatâs mine. If itâs not mine, I wouldnât want it even if you handed it to me!"
Hugo Cheneyâs words were sanctimonious.
But it was all bullshit.
Jayce couldnât be bothered to argue with him. "Cut the crap. You want it, right? Then come and take it! Iâd love to see if you have the guts to even try!"
"Jayce, you said it yourself! I was originally thinking that since weâre from the same base, we should never resort to infighting. But since youâve put it that way, if I donât do something, wonât it look like Iâm afraid of you?"
"Enough of your whining," Jayce cut him off. "If youâve got the balls, come and take it. If not, then scram. I donât have time to waste on your nonsense."
The facade Hugo Cheney had been struggling to maintain finally began to crumble.
"Jayce, donât push it! I was trying to discuss this nicely with you, that was me showing you respectâ"
"I donât need you to give me respect! I earn my own!"
"You!"
Hugo Cheneyâs expression completely fell apart.
"What are you all standing around for!"
Hugo Cheney twisted around and yelled at the people behind him.
"Didnât you hear Mr. Everett? Get up there and take it! Whatâs rightfully ours, we have to take back ourselves!"
His words were pointed.
But no one took the bait.
The people standing behind Hugo Cheney were all Superpower Users, and their Superpowers were all stronger than his.
But for various reasons, they had to obey him.
Now, hearing his order, they all charged toward Jayce.
Of course, they werenât just rushing because they had to listen to Hugo Cheney; they wanted that Crystal Core, too.
âJayce and Sierra Sullivan just fought that giant Aberrant Beast for a long time. Their stamina must be depleted!â
âJayce must have used up most of his Superpower. With so many of us attacking at once, we can definitely catch him off guard!â
However, the rude awakening that followed was as swift as it was brutal.
In a single exchange, Jayce had them all on the ground.
As they slammed heavily onto the ground, the group looked on in disbelief.
âWasnât Jayceâs Superpower supposed to be almost depleted?â
âHow could he still be so powerful?â
Hugo Cheney hadnât expected this either. Along with the shock on his face, a wave of fear washed over him.
He had only been so arrogant moments ago because he thought Jayce was a spent force.
But it turned out the men heâd brought were the useless ones.
Jayce had beaten them so badly they couldnât even get up!
Humiliating!
Absolutely humiliating!
Jayce ignored the men lying on the ground and walked step-by-step toward Hugo Cheney.
"See? Iâve earned my own respect. So, Mr. Cheney, how about it? The thing you want... looks like youâll have to get it yourself now, wonât you?"
As Jayce advanced on him, Hugo Cheney stumbled backward.
"You! Jayce! Donât go too far!"
"Me, go too far?" Jayce laughed. "You bring a mob to steal my spoils of war, and you have the nerve to say Iâm going too far? Well, since youâve already accused me, Iâd be at a real disadvantage if I didnât actually do something, wouldnât I?"
As he spoke, Jayce raised his hand.
Hugo Cheney instinctively covered his head. "No! You canât do this to me! My dad wonât let you get away with it!"
"Fine!"
Jayce lowered his hand.
Hearing Jayce agree so readily, Hugo Cheneyâs face was a mask of astonishment.
âWhen did Jayce become so easy to talk to?â
âIs this even the same Jayce I know?â
"You..." Hugo Cheney looked at Jayce uncertainly. "You have to keep your word!"
Jayce nodded. "Donât worry! Iâll keep my word! Otherwise, what would I do if you went crying to your dad, and he brought your sniveling ass to my dad?"
"You!"
Hugo Cheneyâs face turned ashen with rage.
Jayce was openly mocking him!
But faced with such ridicule, Hugo Cheney wanted to retort, yet he had no idea what to say.
âWhat if I say the wrong thing and Jayce just attacks me?â
All sorts of thoughts churned in Hugo Cheneyâs mind, leaving him hesitant and afraid to speak.
Jayce raised an eyebrow. "Still not leaving? You still want to try and take it?"
Hugo Cheney snapped out of it as if waking from a dream. Without another moment of hesitation, he turned and fled.
He ran without a single backward glance, not even sparing a look for the men he had brought with him.
Jayce turned to the downed men. "Next time something like this happens, donât be so stupid as to rush to the front. Look, when things actually went south, he ran faster than a rabbit and left you all behind! Youâre lucky I donât hold a grudge, or youâd all have thrown your lives away for nothing, wouldnât you?"
Although the men all knew Jayce was just trying to stir up trouble between them,
they had to admit he was telling the truth.
Hugo Cheney really was a piece of shit!
They had followed him here, and when trouble actually started, he had run off without a second thought!
They were going to have to settle the score with Hugo Cheney when they got back!
Superpower Users like them werenât to be trifled with!
Worse comes to worst... they could always follow Commander Everett!
