Initially, Charlotte Morgan was resolute.
But after hearing what Jayce said, she began to hesitate.
Of course, she wanted to become stronger.
But she wanted to live even more.
âIf I die while awakening a Superpower, then why would I even want to awaken one?â
Seeing Charlotte Morganâs resolve waver, Sierra Sullivan also spoke up softly, "Weâll support you if you want to awaken a Superpower, of course, but thereâs no need to take such a risk. The person who gave you this idea was probably just guessing. You canât take something like that at face value!"
"Thatâs impossible!" Charlotte immediately retorted. "Itâs not a guess! Theyâve experimentedâ"
Before she could finish, Charlotte covered her mouth, her face filled with regret.
Though Charlotte had only said one unfinished sentence, Sierra and the others already understood.
âSomeone is running experiments!â
âExperiments on Superpower awakening!â
âBut those kinds of experiments... they use human subjects!â
âAnd with any experiment, there are successes... and failures.â
âThe successful ones awaken Superpowers.â
âBut what about the failures?â
âThe best-case scenario is that they simply donât awaken a Superpower.â
But...
It wasnât that Sierra was pessimistic.
She just wasnât that naive.
Who knew how long these experiments had been going on, but they had probably already claimed many victims.
Their base wasnât huge, but it wasnât exactly small, either.
So many buildings.
Combined with the difficulty of travel, each building was like an isolated island. Routine contact relied entirely on walkie-talkies.
âBut could you trust everything you heard over the walkie-talkie?â
Kevin Everettâs gaze was piercing as he stared fixedly at Charlotte Morgan. "If you want to remain in the Everett Family, if you want to remain my daughter-in-law, you will tell me everything, from beginning to end. If you choose to stay silent, you can leave right now!"
Hearing this, Charlotte Morganâs expression instantly turned to panic.
"Dad! Iâm not leaving!"
Charlotte wasnât a fool.
On the contrary, she could be quite sharp when she needed to be.
She knew full well that if she left the Everett Family now, her quality of life would plummet.
Just surviving would become a struggle, let alone enjoying her current life with plentiful food and her own private room.
âThere was no way she was leaving the Everett Family!â
"Iâll talk!" Charlotte said, her eyes welling with tears. "Iâll tell you everything right now!"
Tim Everett shot Charlotte an irritated look. "If youâre going to talk, then get on with it! Donât waste our time!"
Sierra subconsciously glanced at Tim.
âWhat he really means is, âdonât drag me into this,ââ she thought.
Charlotte hastily wiped the tears from her face, took a deep breath, and began to speak slowly.
"I only overheard it! A couple of days ago, at the trading market in the underground garage, I heard some people talking about awakening Superpowers. They said theyâd run experiments on many people and concluded that using a higher-level Crystal Core would awaken a rarer, more powerful Superpower."
Kevin Everett frowned. "Why would they say all that?"
"He said... they could help people awaken Superpowers for free..."
Charlotteâs expression grew complicated, her thoughts unreadable.
"I was tempted, but... I figured our family should have Crystal Cores, so I wouldnât need their help. I didnât want to owe anyone a favor, so I turned them down..."
Charlotte didnât say any more, but her face was filled with relief.
Clearly, Charlotte now understood that something was very wrong.
Thereâs no such thing as a free lunch.
There wasnât before, and there certainly isnât now.
âWhy on earth would those people help others awaken Superpowers for free?â
âIt must be because thereâs something in it for them!â
âSo where did they get their test subjects?â
âThey were tricked, of course!â
âShe had been so close to falling for it!â
âIf she had really gone with them, what would have happened to her?â
âWould she have successfully awakened a Superpower, or...â
The more Charlotte thought about it, the more frightened she became, and her face grew pale.
Seeing her like this, Kevin Everett snorted but said nothing.
Tim Everett, however, looked like he was about to explode and shot to his feet.
"You! How could you?! This is huge! Why didnât you say something the moment you got back?"
"Do you have any idea how many people could die because you kept this to yourself?"
"You... you woman! Youâre so unbelievably shortsighted! Iâve never met anyone like you!"
"If it werenât for the two kids, Iâd be done with you right now!"
After railing at Charlotte, Tim Everett quickly turned to Kevin Everett.
"Dad! This has nothing to do with me, I swear! I really didnât know!"
"If Iâd known, I wouldâve told you right away!"
"Dad, you canât blame me for this!"
"Enough!"
Kevin Everett cut him off coldly. "No one asked you, and no one is blaming you! Now shut your mouth!"
Being rebuked so coldly by his father didnât upset Tim Everett in the slightest.
On the contrary, he was greatly relieved.
âAt least this meant his father wasnât mad at him!â
âAs for Charlotte?â
âWho gives a damn about her!â
The sight of the couple gave Kevin Everett a headache. He waved a hand at them irritably. "Alright! Thereâs nothing for you two here. Go back to your room!"
That was all Tim Everett needed to hear. He immediately shot up and strode toward their room without so much as a second glance at Charlotte.
Charlotte, however, didnât stand up right away. Her expression had become even more serious than before.
"Dad, I want to awaken a Superpower!"
âShe was truly sick of this wretched, half-life!â
âOriginally, sheâd hoped to rely on Tim.â
âBut after all this time, Tim was still just drifting through life, wasting his days in a drunken stupor with no intention of bettering himself.â
âSince she couldnât count on Tim, she would have to count on herself!â
âIf she could become a Superpower User, her life would be so much better than it was now!â
Kevin Everett frowned slightly. "Are you sure? Thereâs only a chance youâll succeed in awakening a Superpower. If you fail... you know what that means, donât you?"
For a split second, Charlotteâs face turned deathly pale.
But just as quickly, her expression hardened with resolve.
"I know."
"Even if I fail and end up dying, I... I canât go on like this."
"I want to live like a human being."
Sierra looked at Charlotte in surprise. She truly hadnât expected to hear such words from her.
âGoes to show you canât judge a book by its cover.â
âPeople really can change.â
âIf Charlotte could really awaken a Superpower, it would be a good thing for her and for her two children.â
"Since youâve made up your mind." Kevin Everett nodded. "Fine. When do you want to do it?"
