Sierra Sullivan and Jayce followed behind the crowd, the last to enter.
Upon entering the building, the first thing they saw was row after row of office desks.
The desks were piled messily with documents.
Sierra Sullivan quietly approached a desk and examined the documents on top. They were filled with nothing but data.
All of it related to Superpowers.
But Sierra couldnât quite decipher the annotations that followed.
Before she could take a closer look, someone tugged her arm.
"What are you still doing standing here? Hurry up and get inside. Weâre about to begin."
Sierra was still puzzling over the cryptic annotations, so when she heard the person speak, she didnât react right away. She subconsciously asked, "Begin what?"
"What do you mean, âbegin whatâ?"
The speakerâs tone turned peculiar.
"You came all this way. What else could we be starting? The Superpower awakening, of course!"
Hearing this, Sierraâs focus slowly returned. She took a closer look at the speaker.
It was another person in a white lab coat.
This one, however, was a woman.
She had short hair and was wearing a mask.
Although her face was mostly hidden, the skin around her eyes suggested she was in her thirties or forties.
Though they had never met, the womanâs eyes were filled with scrutiny and disgust as she looked at Sierra.
As a result, her voice was dripping with scorn.
If she werenât focused on her mission here, Sierra would have already struck.
Taking a deep breath, Sierra suppressed her anger and looked away.
It was then she noticed that only ten people from their original group were left.
Jayce was gone, too.
She had only been distracted for a moment. Where had everyone gone?
Sierra immediately looked at the woman beside her. "Where are the others?"
"What others?" the woman retorted irritably.
"The people we came in with! Ten of them are gone!"
"Theyâve gone to awaken their Superpowers! Donât worry, once theyâre done, itâll be your turn."
As the woman spoke, that faint, mocking tone returned to her voice.
Sierra had tolerated her moments ago for the sake of the mission.
But now, with Jayce missing and the situation uncertain, she was done tolerating it.
Sierra shot out a hand and grabbed the woman by the throat.
"Donât you know how to talk to people? If you donât, you can just shut up forever!"
With Sierraâs hand around her throat, the womanâs feet gradually lifted off the ground.
She clawed at Sierraâs hand with both of her own, but it was useless.
Within seconds, her face flushed crimson and her eyes became bloodshot. She looked as if she would pass out at any moment.
The others were too stunned by the sudden turn of events to react.
But seeing the woman on the verge of death, they all snapped back to reality.
"Wh-what are you doing?"
"Why are you choking her! What are you doing?"
"So what if you have to wait? Thereâs no need to get this angry!"
These words came from the other survivors who had arrived with Sierra.
Even now, they hadnât realized anything was amiss. They were still filled with excitement and hope, imagining they would soon become Superpower Users.
The other figures in white lab coats, however, began to back away one by one upon seeing Sierraâs actions.
They werenât idiots; they could tell Sierra Sullivan meant trouble.
One of them had just retreated to a doorway when the door behind him was suddenly burst open with great force.
The man in the white coat leaning against it was launched like a marble from a slingshot. He shot up, slammed into the ceiling, then crashed back to the floor, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Sierra looked toward the doorway and, just as she expected, saw Jayce standing there with a furious expression.
Seeing that Jayce was unharmed, Sierra casually tossed the woman aside and hurried over to him.
"Jayce, what happened? Are you okay?"
Jayce shook his head. "Iâm fine, but insideâ"
"Inside?"
Sierra peered into the room behind Jayce. In the corner, she saw a pile of bodies that had been carelessly discarded, as if they hadnât gotten around to disposing of them yet.
The way they died was horrific. It was as if they had been ruptured from the inside, their veins bulging.
The ghastly, bulging veins looked like hideous worms, unsettling to look at both viscerally and psychologically.
Judging by their clothing and the state of their skin, it was obvious they had lived in poor conditions.
They had clearly all been lured here with false promises.
They had believed the nonsense about easily becoming Superpower Users, and it had cost them their lives.
Though she didnât know these people, the sight filled Sierraâs heart with rage.
The rage burned in her chest, threatening to explode.
Before Sierra or Jayce could act, the other survivors rushed over, looking displeased.
"Whatâs wrong with you two?"
"Maybe you donât want to awaken a Superpower, but we do!"
"Exactly! What are you two doing, causing trouble like this!"
Sierra gave them a cold stare. "Weâre causing trouble? Why donât you come take a look for yourselves!"
"Look at what? What is there to see?"
Despite his words, the man still stepped into the room.
The next moment, he saw the bodies piled together.
"Ah!"
"Bodies!"
"Why are there so many bodies!"
Sierra sneered. "Why so many bodies, you ask? They were just like youâpeople who wanted to awaken a Superpower!"
"How... how could this be..."
The others crowded around to look. When they saw the bodies, the color drained from their faces.
A few of them even covered their mouths, as if they were about to be sick.
"I want to leave!"
"I want to get out of here!"
"I want to get out of here right now!"
Shouting, they turned and ran for the door.
Before they could reach it, the main door swung open from the outside.
The one leading the group was none other than Hugo Cheney.
With a swaggering, nonchalant air, Hugo Cheney eyed the group swarming at the door.
"Yelling and screaming. Whatâs all the commotion?"
"I heard someone was causing trouble. Was it you lot?"
"What do you take this place for? Think you can just come and go as you please?"
"Today, not a single one of you is leaving!"
Hugo Cheney was flanked by several others, all of them Superpower Users, and every one of them looked dangerous.
The survivors quickly fell back, retreating behind Sierra Sullivan and Jayce.
Hugo Cheneyâs gaze followed, landing on Sierra Sullivan and Jayce.
