Jayce raised an eyebrow. "Of course, it was a success."
âHow could I possibly fail?â
"I know you succeeded. So, what did you awaken?" Dr. Hayes asked patiently.
"The Wood Element Ability."
Hearing Jayceâs answer, Sierra shot him a surprised look.
âI didnât expect Jayce to awaken the Wood Element Ability.â
âEven though I didnât manage to awaken the Wood Element Ability, itâs a good thing that Jayce did.â
âThe two of us together could be considered complementary.â
âBesides, the Water Ability and the Wood Element Ability are inherently complementary.â
âNo matter how you look at it, this is a good outcome.â
As he spoke, Jayce looked at Sierra. "Sierra, what Superpower did you awaken?"
"Space System," Sierra replied succinctly.
But Jayceâs eyes lit up instantly.
âThe Space System is great!â
âWith the Space Ability, the secret of Sierraâs space can be well hidden.â
âThis really is a good thing!â
Dr. Hayes studied Jayce closely. "The Wood Element Ability... it doesnât really suit you."
"What?" Jayce gave Dr. Hayes a strange look. "What do you mean it doesnât suit me?"
âDo Superpowers pick and choose people?â
Before Jayce could say anything more, Dr. Hayes had already turned to Sierra.
"This was still very successful. After you get back, when youâre cultivating your Superpowers, pay close attention to how you feel. It would be best if you could keep a record. Give it to me later so I can use it as a reference.
"If you want to awaken even more Superpowers, you can wait a few days and try again. It should be successful."
âWeâve only just awakened our second Superpowers, and Dr. Hayes is already thinking about a third time. He really is a research fiend!â
âBut I have to admit, people like him are definitely needed.â
âWithout someone like him, thereâs no telling how long it would have taken for the two of us to awaken a second Superpower.â
"Donât worry, Dr. Hayes." Sierra agreed with a smile. "Weâll definitely keep good records and do our best to provide you with material."
Jayce naturally had no objections to what Sierra had promised, so he agreed as well.
"Donât you worry, weâll definitely help you! We have to help each other to get stronger! Thatâs how weâll survive longer and live better in this apocalypse!"
The two didnât linger and left soon after.
After returning, the first thing they did was go see Kevin Everett.
Although Kevin Everett didnât have a Superpower, his perception was still very keen.
The moment he saw the two of them, he immediately sensed something was off.
He felt that they were somehow different than before.
But if asked what exactly was different, he couldnât quite put his finger on it.
"You two are..." Kevin Everett began, testing the waters. "Why do I get the feeling youâre different than before?"
Jayce looked at Kevin Everett with some surprise. "Dad, you donât even have a Superpower. How can your senses be so sharp?"
Kevin Everett shot Jayce a glare. "Whatâs so strange about that? Looking down on your old man, are you?! Now hurry up and tell me what happened."
Jayce chuckled and explained everything from beginning to end.
Although there were no heart-pounding descriptions, Kevin Everettâs heart was in his throat as he listened.
It might have sounded easy, but he knew that in reality, it was anything but.
âWhat would have happened if they hadnât succeeded?â
Kevin Everett didnât dare to think about it, nor did he want to.
In any case, they had already succeeded. There was no point in thinking about it now.
"If you both can awaken a second Superpower, then does that mean I can also... try to awaken one?" Kevin Everett brought up the matter again.
This wasnât a sudden whim.
He had wanted a Superpower for a long time.
It was just that there had been no opportunity back then.
But now, with Dr. Hayesâs help, the chances of successfully awakening a Superpower might be much higher.
With that thought, the desire Kevin Everett had previously suppressed began to stir once more.
Jayce knew his father well. Hearing him speak like this, he knew Kevin Everett was set on getting a Superpower again.
Jayce didnât object, however.
"Dad, if you really want to awaken a Superpower, you might as well wait a little while. Maybe in time, there will be a safer method with a higher success rate. Your position is quite special, after all. The safer it is, the better it will be for both you and the base, donât you think?"
Kevin Everett had never been a reckless person. He always had a clear sense of what he could and couldnât do.
Hearing Jayceâs words, Kevin Everett nodded. "Youâre right. Iâll wait a bit longer then!"
"Whereâs Candice?" Sierra asked.
âI know Candiceâs personality.â
âSheâs so attached to me, she should have run out as soon as she heard my voice.â
âBut itâs been so long, and Candice still hasnât appeared. Somethingâs clearly not right.â
"Sheâs busy!" Kevin Everett said with a smile. "Donât let that little girlâs age fool you. Sheâs full of drive and resilience. Someone mentioned that supplies were running low, and she went right to work growing crops. Your second sister-in-law is also helping, but you know herâher ability is limited, so she canât help much. Itâs better than nothing, but it means more work for Candice."
Just from Kevin Everettâs words, Sierra could guess how hard Candice was working.
For a five-year-old child, it was indeed too demanding.
But that was the reality of their current situation.
No one could afford to stand alone in this apocalypse.
You had to contribute as much as your abilities allowed, regardless of age.
Fortunately, Candiceâs personality was not one to worry about.
That little girl was like a cactus.
And it was precisely this kind of personality that allowed one to live better in the apocalypse!
Jayce stood up. "Iâll go help, too!"
âThe Wood Element Ability is useful after all!â
âEven though I just awakened it, I should be able to help out at least a little!â
Sierra watched Jayceâs retreating back with a hint of envy, but she quickly looked away.
âMy Superpower is different from Jayceâs, and so are my responsibilities.â
âI just need to do my own job well. Thereâs no need to be envious of Jayce.â
Seeing Sierra look away so quickly, Kevin Everett nodded to himself in approval.
âSierra really is impressive in that regard. Sheâs so level-headed. She knows what she needs to do and can focus on herself instead of envying what others have.â
Being stared at by Kevin Everett, and with such a strange look in his eyes, Sierra couldnât pretend she hadnât noticed.
Sierra had no choice but to smile at Kevin Everett. "Uncle, why are you looking at me like that?"
"Itâs nothing, nothing." Kevin Everett waved his hand. "I was just thinking that kid Jayce is really lucky to have found you!"
Hearing this, Sierraâs smile grew even warmer. "You canât quite put it all that way. Iâm also very fortunate to have Jayce."
