Chapter 48: Chapter 48: A Sweet Dream
Still, Master Nathan couldnāt help but wonder: which young lady had captured Nathaniel Nathanās heart?
When Vera Xavierās alarm went off, she shut it down and suddenly realized something was off. āWhereās Nathaniel Nathan?ā
He had been gone for a while; his warmth had already faded from the bed. If it werenāt for the faint scent heād left behind, she might have doubted he had come over last night at all.
Vera Xavier paused when she saw the outfit laid out on her desk. She recognized it. They had bought it together, and she had left it in his car.
She adored the outfit, but after the huge scene yesterday, wearing new clothes out would only cause more trouble.
So, she put the new outfit into her suitcase and pulled out an old one to change into.
Just as she was about to open the door, she remembered something. She took a bottle of gentian violet from her drawer and dabbed it on her forehead. She wasnāt actually injured, but the purple liquid made it look like she had a dark bruise.
As she opened her door, Cara Preston happened to open hers at the same time. Cara flashed a sweet smile. "Morning, sis!"
Before Vera Xavier could say a word, Cara leaned in, craning her neck to scan the room behind her. Then she said, "I woke up in the middle of the night yesterday, and I thought I heard a manās voice coming from your room..."
Vera Xavierās heart leaped, but she kept her expression calm. "You must have been dreaming."
Her room was tiny, small enough to be taken in at a glance. The closet was too small to hide anyone, leaving only the space under the bed.
However, Cara Preston had helped Rona Langdon clean this room before. She knew the space under the bed was filled with storage compartments, making it impossible to hide anyone.
Besides, the only way into the Preston house was through the main door, which was bolted from the inside and still hadnāt been opened this morning.
So Cara Preston smiled and said, "Maybe I was just dreaming. It just felt so real. The manās voice was actually quite nice, though."
Vera Xavier winked at her. "Didnāt you go with Elise Langdon to see that celebrity yesterday? Donāt tell me you got all hot and bothered and started having racy dreams about him."
Cara Prestonās face flushed. "Sis, what are you talking about!"
With that, she headed downstairs, though she couldnāt help but think to herself, āThat voice last night... it really did sound a bit like Nathaniel Nathanās...ā
A young girlās crush is a bashful thing. Feeling flustered herself, she certainly wasnāt going to press Vera Xavier any further, choosing to believe it had all been a sweet dream.
Vera Xavier breathed a quiet sigh of relief. āI have to warn Nathaniel Nathan about this,ā she thought. āHe canāt come here anymore!ā
Zachary Preston called from downstairs, "Vera, Cara, come down for breakfast."
Rona Langdon had originally said she would get up to make them breakfast, but Vera Xavier had been the one doing it ever since she came back. After the huge fight between Vera and Rona yesterday, Rona had started threatening Zachary Preston by going on strike and refusing to do anything.
Zachary Preston, sick of it all, had gotten up early to make breakfast for Vera Xavier and Cara Preston himself, not wanting to deal with Rona Langdon.
When Vera Xavier came downstairs, she saw the dark circles under Zachary Prestonās eyes and felt a pang of guilt. She said softly, "Dad, I can make breakfast from now on."

"Itās fine," Zachary Preston said gently. "You need to focus on your studies. Itās better to use this time for reading."
Zachary Prestonās heart ached when he saw the "wound" on her forehead, stained purple with gentian violet. He added another fried egg to her bowl.
Vera Xavierās eyes reddened slightly. Without a word, she walked to the table and began to eat. The breakfast was noodles, topped with two fried eggs.
