Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Too Kind
Vera Xavier sneered inwardly. âCara Preston is already getting antsy, and this is only the beginning.â
For the next few classes, Cara Preston remained distracted by the incident. At one point, the teacher called on her, and she stumbled over the answer. A few girls who never got along with her snickered in the corner.
Cara Preston found the whole thing incredibly humiliating, and it left a sour taste in her mouth. She had no choice but to force herself to pay attention for the rest of her classes.
When school let out that afternoon, she left the classroom with Vera Xavier, just as she always did. Waiting until no one was paying attention to them, she whispered, "Sis, how could you talk like that today?"
Vera Xavier looked at her, feigning confusion. "Did I say something wrong?"
Cara Preston faltered for a second, then said in an accusatory tone, "Weâre sisters. I was reminding you for your own good! If you hadnât been staring at the class monitor, why would I have even looked over at you two? Now the whole class misunderstands me!"
Vera Xavier nodded. "Hm, that makes sense. But since youâre doing it for my own good, could you remind me in private next time? Pointing it out in front of the entire class like that makes *them* misunderstand things."
Cara Preston met Vera Xavierâs clear gaze and said softly, "Youâre right, I didnât think it through. Iâll be more careful next time."
Hearing this, Vera Xavier offered a gentle smile of her own. âIf Cara Preston loves putting on an act this much, then Iâll gladly play along.â
Cara Preston added, "Sis, you have to remember one thing: weâre the real sisters here. Donât let anyone drive a wedge between us. No matter what I do, itâs always for your own good."
"Okay, Iâll remember that," Vera Xavier said with a smile.
âCara Preston, looking out for me? Yeah, right!â
âI remember with crystal clarity how Cara Preston treated me in my past life. Saying all this now... in the end, itâs just an attempt to brainwash me.â
Just then, Elise Langdon came over to get Cara Preston. Caraâs eyes lit up, and she said to Vera Xavier, "Iâm going to Eliseâs to study. You can go home by yourself, Sis!"
Before Vera Xavier could even nod, Cara Preston had already run off with Elise Langdon.
From a distance, she could still hear Elise Langdonâs voice: "Cara, youâre just too kind. After how she treated you, youâre still speaking to her so nicely."
"What can I do? Sheâs my sister," Cara Prestonâs voice sounded wronged, yet incredibly gentle and harmless.
âIâve heard this same old line so many times since my rebirth. Itâs so fucking disgusting.â
As Vera Xavier was walking out with her backpack on, she ran into Shirley Forrest. Remembering Shirleyâs help earlier that day, she walked up to her and said, "Thanks."
Shirley Forrest glanced at her. "Donât thank me. If you want to thank someone, thank yourself for not being as stupid as you used to be."
Vera Xavier: "..."
With that, Shirley Forrest turned and walked away.
âHer personality is really something else,â Vera thought. âSheâs not just cold; sheâs downright sharp-tongued.â
But Vera Xavier knew that was just Shirleyâs personality, so she didnât take it to heart. She just shrugged and headed home with her backpack.
When she got home, Rona Langdon was in the middle of a mahjong game with a few of the neighborhood ladies. As soon as they saw her, one of them said with a smile, "Oh, Veraâs back!"
Vera Xavier hadnât been back with the Preston Family for long, and Rona Langdon rarely let her go out, so she only recognized one of these womenâthe one who had just greeted her. That womanâs demeanor was a carbon copy of Rona Langdonâs.
She gave a polite greeting. "Hello, Alden."
