Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Eating Candy Together
Vera Xavier looked bewildered. "What?"
"A lollipop," Nathaniel Nathan said calmly.
Vera Xavier knew why he wanted a lollipop and explained, "I didnât know you were waiting for me, so I only bought one."
Nathaniel Nathan grunted in acknowledgment, but his outstretched hand didnât retract. Seeing her hesitation, he said, "Itâs too dangerous to eat a lollipop in a moving car."
Thinking she understood him, Vera handed the lollipop over. Then, she witnessed a sight she would never forget: he popped the lollipop, which she had already half-eaten, directly into his mouth.
Vera Xavier froze instantly. âHe... he actually ate the lollipop I was halfway through!â
Nathaniel Nathan felt her stare and his mood brightened, a slight smile playing on his lips. "I suddenly got a craving for candy."
âIf Ronan Tate were here, heâd probably call him out on the spot. He never eats candy!â
Vera Xavier coughed lightly, suddenly finding herself at a loss for words. But then he took the lollipop out of his mouth and asked, "Want it back?"
Vera Xavier swallowed hard. "No, you have it!"
She really couldnât muster the courage to eat a lollipop heâd had in his mouth, even if it was hers to begin with.
This time, Nathaniel Nathan didnât press her. Instead, he asked, "Do you like lollipops?"
Vera Xavier nodded. Nathaniel Nathan didnât ask anything else, and she stole another glance at him.
âOn any other grown man, a lollipop would look a bit childish. But when he ate it, he somehow made it look elegant. It even took the edge off his cold, otherworldly handsome face, giving him a touch of mortal charm.â
She asked him, "Where are we going?"
"Youâll know when we get there," Nathaniel Nathan replied in his usual cold, detached tone.
Vera Xavier didnât ask again. She found talking with him to be a rather dull affair; he was so concise that what others might take a paragraph to describe, he would cover in a single sentence.
The car stopped in front of a farmstead. In an era before agritourism became widespread, such places were quite rare. The exterior looked rather plain, but stepping inside revealed a whole new world.
Roses were planted along the corners of the inner walls, blooming vibrantly in the peak of their season. In the main hall, the four words "A Tranquil Zen Mind" were written in brush calligraphy. A landscape painting hung beside it, and a small potted plant sat on a side table.
The atmosphere inside was surprisingly reminiscent of the artistic mood found only in the classical gardens of Suzhou.
After a short corridor, there was a small pond with several dozen goldfish swimming in it.
A table was set up nearby, and a middle-aged man who looked to be in his fifties walked over. He had an elegant, serene demeanor, giving him the air of a reclusive master.
He clearly recognized Nathaniel Nathan, greeting him with a smile. "Nathaniel, youâre here. Is this your girlfriend?"
Nathaniel Nathan nodded. "Vera, this is Mr. Sterling."
"Iâve heard so much about you, Mr. Sterling. Itâs a true pleasure to meet you," Vera Xavier greeted him formally. Inwardly, however, she was stunned. She knew about this Mr. Sterling from her past life. He was a master carver who had won numerous major awardsâa legendary figure considered a national treasure in his field.
She truly never expected that Nathaniel Nathan knew Mr. Sterling.
Mr. Sterlingâs eyes twinkled with amusement as he said, "Have you really heard of me before?"
"Of course," Vera Xavier replied. "Everyone knows Mr. Sterlingâs carving skills are unparalleled."
âI wasnât just trying to kiss up to him; he really was that incredible.â
